An analysis of 102 survey responses from generic commodity promotion organizations was completed. Details regarding objectives, export promotion, funding sources, program evaluation, and the allocation of expenditures for promotion organizations were evaluated. We estimate that the organizations included in this analysis control 70 to 80 percent of the total generic commodity promotion expenditures in the U.S. Since generic commodity promotion organizations play a significant roll in promoting and marketing many commodities, analyses of these organizations should continue to provide potential benchmarking and summarizing information so that they can operate efficiently and effectively |

Budget pressures, emphasis on environmentally sensitive agriculture, emphasis on finding agricultural export markets, and anti-agricultural program sentiment have fueled a climate for change in United States agricultural policy. Significant changes depend on the political strength of agricultural interest groups and on the compromises which can be reached between them. Several notable achievements have been accomplished in recent domestic agricultural policy legislation. The 1995 farm bill will define the commodity and conservation programs for the next five years. Comprehensive federal agricultural legislation occurs in the United States (US) on a five-year schedule. While year-to-year changes in agricultural policy do occur, the period 1991-93 has been less eventful than many previous ones. What changes have occurred to affect the course of the agricultural sector and agricultural policy are largely external to the farm bill and farm legislation.
