Here we developed a composite pollen-based record of altitudinal vegetation changes from Lake Fuquene (5 degrees N) in Colombia at 2540m elevation. We quantitatively calibrated Arboreal Pollen percentages (AP%) into mean annual temperature (MAT) changes with an unprecedented similar to 60-year resolution over the past 284 000 years. An age model for the AP% record was constructed using frequency analysis in the depth domain and tuning of the distinct obliquity-related variations to the latest marine oxygen isotope stacked record. The effect of bacterial strains on the growth rate of rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis, was determined under monoxenic conditions. The first objective was to obtain sterile rotifer cultures starting from rotifer resting eggs using merthiolate or glutaraldehyde as disinfectant. Sterile rotifer cultures were obtained, without affecting the hatching ability of the resting eggs, when 0.05 µl/l glutaraldehyde was used. This disinfection procedure was used to examine the effect of 20 bacterial strains, isolated from well-performing live-feed production systems, on the population growth rate of rotifers cultured under monoxenic conditions. Several bacteriological surveys were performed from 1994 to 1996 at different <i>Litopenaeus vannamei</i> hatcheries (in Ecuador) and shrimp farms (in Mexico). Samples were taken from routine productions of healthy and diseased <i>L. vannamei</i> larvae, postlarvae, and their culture environment and from healthy and diseased juveniles and broodstock. In Ecuador, the dominant bacterial flora associated with shrimp larvae showing symptoms of zoea 2 syndrome, mysis mold syndrome, and bolitas syndrome has been determined.
