Vibrios associated with routine productions of Brachionus plicatilis OMA
Verdonck, L.; Grisez, L.; Sweetman, E.; Minkoff, G.; Sorgeloos, P.; Ollevier, F.P.; Swings, J..
Surveys for bacteriological analysis were carried out in 1990-1991 in two different marine fish hatcheries located in Greece and northern Spain. Samples were taken from 12 different routine productions of Brachionus plicatilis before and during enrichment. Isolates were characterized by whole cell fatty acid methyl ester analysis and by BIOLOG metabolic fingerprinting. Vibrio anguillarum and/or Vibrio alginolyticus were dominant Vibrio species in the rotifer samples taken after enrichment and rinsing, before being delivered to the fish larvae. None of the Vibrio anguillarum strains belonged to the pathogenic serotypes for juvenile and adult fish.

Variability of the microbial environment of rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia production systems OMA
Verdonck, L.; Swings, J.; Kersters, K.; Dehasque, M.; Sorgeloos, P.; Léger, P..
Samplings were organized in three marine fish hatcheries. Samples were taken at different steps during the production of algae, rotifers and Artemia . There were 233 dominant colony types isolated for further characterization. The isolates were compared to each other and to reference strains of Photobacterium, Vibrio and Alteromonas, using cellular fatty acid fingerprints. Fatty acid profiles of the isolates were grouped using principal component analysis. The isolates fell into at least ten major groups, of which two correspond to the genera Vibrio and to Alteromonas, respectively. Some groups seem to be restricted to a particular type of live food or isolation...

Vibrios associated with Penaeus chinensis (Crustacea: Decapoda) larvae in Chinese shrimp hatcheries OMA
Vandenberghe, J.; Li, Y.; Verdonck, L.; Li, J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Xu, H.S.; Swings, J..
Bacteriological surveys were performed in 1995 and 1996 in three shrimp hatcheries located in the north of the People’s Republic of China. Samples were taken from routine productions of healthy Penaeus chinensis larvae, their environment and from diseased larvae. A total of 186 isolates from the dominant bacterial flora was characterized by Biolog metabolic fingerprinting and identified by comparison to a database of 850 Vibrio type- and reference strains. Representative Vibrio harveyi strains were further genotypically analyzed by AFLP fingerprinting of whole-genomes. An overwhelming predominance of V. alginolyticus and V. harveyi was observed in the larval developmental stages...

Vibrios associated with Litopenaeus vannamei larvae, postlarvae, broodstock, and hatchery probionts OMA
Vandenberghe, J.; Verdonck, L.; Robles-Arozarena, R.; Rivera, G.; Bolland, A.; Balladares, M.; Gomez-Gil, B.; Calderon, J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Swings, J..
Several bacteriological surveys were performed from 1994 to 1996 at different Litopenaeus vannamei hatcheries (in Ecuador) and shrimp farms (in Mexico). Samples were taken from routine productions of healthy and diseased L. vannamei larvae, postlarvae, and their culture environment and from healthy and diseased juveniles and broodstock. In Ecuador, the dominant bacterial flora associated with shrimp larvae showing symptoms of zoea 2 syndrome, mysis mold syndrome, and bolitas syndrome has been determined. Strains were characterized by Biolog metabolic fingerprinting and identified by comparison to a database of 850 Vibrio type and reference strains. A selection of strains was further genotypically...
