The study of soft-bottom macrophytobenthos of the Mediterranean Thau lagoon was carried out in autumn 1986. The total biomass is high (10073 +/- 2006 tDW) and is dominated by Florideophyceae (67 %) and Zostera (22 %). Seven communities have been identified, with the following characteristic species: Solieria chordalis in the deep zone; Ulva rigida, Monostroma obscurum and Gracilaria verrucosa to the northeast; Gracilaria spp. with Sargassum muticum in shellfish breeding zones; Halopitys incurvus to the southwest; and Zostera spp. along the shallow edge. The differentiation of these communities depends essentially on depth, catchment area inputs (fresh water, nutrients, pollutants), sea water flows, hydrodynamism and shellfish breeding activities. In the... |

The introduced invasive alga Caulerpa taxifolia is altering the appearance of algal communities in the western Mediterranean sea. A detailed study of two similar areas, one with and one without Caulerpa taxifolia, shows a drastic impoverishment of the algal community where Caulerpa has invaded. Many of the normally expected species have disappeared; firstly the fleshy species with their epiphytes, then the filamentous species and finally the crustose algae. The most marked effect is seen at the end of the summer and autumn when the Caulerpa reaches its maximum size. Hardly any epiflora is found on the Caulerpa except in spring when old branches with epiphytes predominate. In the Alpes-Maritimes region, species-poor meadows of Caulerpa taxifolia are... |

In 1990, a study of the phytobenthos of the rocky intertidal platforms in the Safi-Essaouira region (Sidi Boulbra, Western Morocco) was carried out at three sites. The intertidal zonation was analysed along permanent transects, and a qualitative and quantitative study of two characteristic units of the eulittoral vegetation - the vegetation belt of Fucus spiralis and the communities of Florideophyceae - was made. One hundred and twenty-nine macroalgal taxa and three phases were listed: 19 Ulvophyceae, 19 Fucophyceae, 1 Bangiophyceae and 93 Florideophyceae. The intertidal communities of the area are typical of semi-exposed and unpolluted platforms of Western Morocco, in the eulittoral zone, most of the typical Fucales that occur along the NE Atlantic coasts... |

This review addresses the problem of recently introduced plants in the Mediterranean in order to analyse their vectors, the dispersal processes and the possible ecological and economic consequences. Ninety-five cases (94 macroscopic algae and one seagrass) are listed and discussed. Three major routes of access into the Mediterranean are indicated: shipping, the Suez canal and aqua-culture. The recent introduction of Caulerpa taxifolia along our coasts has called attention to a new potential source: aquaria. Among the successful acclimatizations, cold-temperate Pacific and Atlantic species remain confined to the north of the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions, Adriatic), whereas some tropical or sub-tropical plants colonize large areas. Some introduced algae... |

A three-dimensional model coupling physical and biological processes for the whole Than lagoon (Mediterranean coast of France) was developed in order to assess the relationships between macrophytes and the oxygen and nitrogen cycles. Ten species have been inserted as forcing variables in the model. Plankton dynamics, shellfish cultivation impact and mineralization of organic matter are also considered, as well as nutrient and oxygen exchanges between the sediment and the water column. Simulations with and without the macrophytes have shown that the system can be characterized as having a highly structured pattern involving lagoon nitrogen and oxygen cycles. This pattern is created by the combined influence of macrophytes, watershed and oyster farming.... |
