The orchid flora of Java has received due attention at a comparatively early stage: in the first years of this century J.J. Smith already subjected them to a comprehensive revision. In later publications he added much new information and introduced more new species. Nowadays this body of information lies rather scattered over a number of periodicals which are only present in botanical libraries. It is gathered indeed in Backer & Bakhuizen van den Brink’s Flora of Java, but this is entirely without illustrations. It is therefore not easily accessible, particularly not for the layman. James Comber’s impressive volume is a very welcome update. He provides a key to the genera, keys to the species of each genus, a description, and some additional... |

A revision is presented of a mainly New Guinean group of species of the genus Bulbophyllum (Orchidaceae) that is generally known as section Hymenobractea. Altogether 7 named taxa have been attributed to this section by previous authors; in this revision only two species are distinguished: Bulbophyllum aemulum and Bulbophyllum infundibuliforme. It appears that Hymenobractea cannot be distinguished from Bulbophyllum sect. Intervallatae (including sect. Dialeipanthe and sect. Lepidorhiza), therefore these two species are included in sect. Intervallatae. A key to the sections morphologically similar to Intervallatae, viz. Leopardinae, Sestochilos and Stenochilus, is included and full information on the two species provided. |

The Hamameli(i)dae comprise, according to the new classification by Thorne, about one quarter of the genera to one third of the families of the Dicotyledonae. The symposium held at the University of Reading, U.K, 22-25 March 1988, highlighted some of the many questions concerning phylogeny and evolution in this group as a contribution to the insight in the main lines of dicotyledonous evolution. The symposium report contains a wealth of information on a wide variety of topics. The phylogenetic position of the Hamamelidae in a wider or narrower sense, or parts thereof, is subject of a number of papers. F. EHRENDORFER reviews the existing diverging interpretations and concludes that the Hamamelidae can be regarded as ancient and partly relictual survivors... |

On a field trip into the interior of Sabah, Borneo, in 1986, a small Bulbophyllum species (Orchidaceae) without flowers was collected, and transferred to the greenhouse of Mr. P. Jongejan, Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Only after several years the plant rewarded the good care given to it with a few sprigs of flowers. It then appeared to be an undescribed species of great elegance, belonging to the section Hirtula Ridley. It displays an unusual combination of characters: it has a distinctly elongated lip, as is found in B. jolandae J.J. Vermeulen, and B. lasioglossum Rolfe, which both have an elongated inflorescence. The new species, however, has a subumbellate inflorescence, as occurs in B. carinilabium J.J. Vermeulen, and B. hirtulum Ridley, which both... |

A revision is presented of six sections of the genus Bulbophyllum (Orchidaceae): sect. Adelopetalum (mainly occurring in Australia), sect. Lepanthanthe, sect. Macrouris, sect. Pelma, sect. Peltopus, and sect. Uncifera (all mainly occurring in New Guinea). Together these include 110 species and 9 subspecies. Fortyseven species and 4 subspecies are new; they are either described in this revision or in precursors to this revision. The genus Dactylorhynchus is reduced to Bulbophyllum. Keys to the species, as well as synonymy, descriptions and illustrations of each species are provided. Some aspects of the morphology of the plants are discussed. A cladistic analysis of each revised section is given. A method to select the closest outgroup species from a number... |

Nineteen new species of the genus Bulbophyllum Thouars (Orchidaceae) are described. They originate from Sumatra (including the Riau Archipelago), Borneo, and Papua New Guinea. Five species belong to sect. Hirtula Ridl., four to sect. Leptopus Schltr., three to sect. Hybochilus Schltr., two to sect. Sestochilus (Breda) Benth. & Hook.f., and one to the sections Cirrhopetalum (Lindl.) Rchb.f., Epicrianthes (Blume) Benth. & Hook, f., and Monilibulbus J.J. Sm. each. Two more species cannot be assigned to any section with certainty; one of these may belong to sect. Desmosanthes (Blume) J. J. Sm. The other shows similarity to B. bisetum Lindl. and B. bisetoides Seidenf.; these three species together may well constitute a separate section. |

Vermeulen, J.J.. |
This paper contains a taxonomic revision of the Bulbophyllinae, with the genera Bulbophyllum (including Cirrhopetalum and Megaclinium) and Chaseella, from continental Africa (including Bioko (Fernando Poo), Sao Tome, Principe, Annobon and Zanzibar). Keys are given to the genera and species. For each species full synonymy, descriptions, notes on distribution, habitat etc. and a line drawing are presented. Many species are also illustrated by colour photographs. Three new taxa are described: Bulbophyllum subligaculiferum, B. bidenticulatum ssp. joyceae and B. scaberulum var. crotalicaudatum. Some new combinations are made. The botanical terminology used is clarified. |

Vermeulen, J.J.. |
This revision of all the orchid species so far recorded from the Solomon Islands and Bougainville (285 species belonging to 87 genera) has a similar layout as the previously published ‘Orchids of Vanuatu’ by the same authors. A short introduction is given to the topography, geology, vegetation, as well as the history of the botanical exploration of the area covered. The account of the species itself is written in a ‘standard’ Flora-style: a key to the genera, keys to the species of each genus, synonyms to the accepted species names, descriptions of the species, etcetera. Numerous full-page line drawings clearly depict diagnostically important parts of about half of the species, sixteen colour plates of high quality give an impression of their beauty. The... |
