Effect of composts on growth and on yield quality of two crops, in a organic experimental farm of Southern Italy Organic Eprints
Verrastro, V.; El Hanafi Sebti, K.; Hewidy M. Ramadan, M.; Diacono, M.; Cocozza, C.; Miano, T..
Soil management in Organic Agriculture (OA) aims to improve the soil fertility (SF) supplying exogenous Organic Matter (OM) with composted and not – composted material. Hence, a two-year field experiment was carried out on a experimental farm of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB) in Apulia Region, Italy, to evaluate the effects, on organically cultivated plant growth and quality (as nitrate accumulation – nitr), of Compost (Comp) also in comparison to commercial organic fertilizers. Our investigations, in particular, aimed to evaluate the influence of Comp on Broccoli crop (Brassica oleracea var. Italica) cultivar Canoe and two varieties of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Mill var. Vespro and Multiplo). However, despite our broad results,...

compost-based nursery substrates: effect of peat substitution on organic melon seedlings Organic Eprints
Tittarelli, Fabio; Rea, E.; Verrastro, V.; Pascual, J.A.; Canali, S.; Ceglie, F.G.; Trinchera, A.; Rivera, C.M..
A bovine manure compost (BMC) and a green compost (GC) were evaluated as components of substrates in partial substitution of peat for organic melon seedlings production. Treatments, differentiated on the basis of the volume percentage of the two analysed composts, were compared to the control (a mixture of peat, coconut fibre and perlite). In order to respect the guidelines of organic production, all the treatments were fertilised, at the beginning of the trial, with guano. Compost-based substrates were analysed for physical, physicochemical and chemical parameters (bulk density, porosity, pH, EC, nutrients content etc.). Even though significant differences were observed, recorded values were in the range of acceptability for growing media. In terms of...

Innovazioni di processo per la produzione di compost di qualità idonei alla conservazione del suolo e alla sostenibilità in agricoltura biologica Organic Eprints
Erriquens, F.G.; Ceglie, F.G.; Diacono, M.; Verrastro, V.; Ferri, D.; Debiase, G.; Mastrangelo, M..

Replacement of Contentious Inputs in Organic Farming Systems (RELACS) – a comprehensive Horizon 2020 project Organic Eprints
Tamm, L.; Pertot, I.; Schmitt, A.; Verrastro, V.; Magid, J.; Bünemann, E. K.; Möller, K.; Athanasiadou, S.; Experton, C.; Leiber, F.; Steinshamm, H.; Moeskops, B.; Herforth-Rahmé, J.; Maurer, V..
Organic farmers adhere to high standards in producing quality food while protecting the environment. However, organic farming needs to improve continuously to keep meeting its ambitious objectives. The project ‘Replacement of Contentious Inputs in Organic Farming Systems’ (RELACS) will foster the development and adoption of cost-efficient and environmentally safe tools and technologies to further reduce the use of external inputs on organic farms across Europe as well as in Non EU Mediterranean countries. Project partners will provide scientific support to develop fair and implementable EU rules to improve current practices in organic farming. Farm advisory networks in 11 European countries will reach out to farmers to ensure effective dissemination and...
