| The material dealt with in this second part of "Octocorallia from the Malay Archipelago" comprises mainly specimens belonging to the family Nephtheidae. Most of these nephtheids were obtained during the cruise of the "Willebrord Snellius". In addition to this material I examined some specimens collected by the Siboga Expedition, which had to be identified or described again. Besides, there were in the Leiden Museum some unidentified colonies, obtained in Malayan waters. These, too, are now recorded. Several authors have already pointed out how difficult it is to identify Dendronephthya, owing to the unsatisfactory description by some previous authors, and because of the great number of variations within the same species. Humes, Boston University Marine Program, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, U.S.A., while on board R/V "Alpha Helix" in the waters of the Moluccas in the spring of 1975. | The author refers 35 valid species to the genus Sarcophyton. The holotypes of nearly all species could be examined; of only three species (S. elegans, S. glaucum, and S. latum) their depository is unknown. The holotypes of eight species were described earlier by the present author, in four cases in co-operation with other authors; the reader is referred to the literature given in the list of valid species. Among the species described in the present paper there is a new one: S. buitendijki. A list of invalid taxa is added. Four keys may help with the identification of the corals. |

| INTRODUCTION This paper is to be regarded as a continuation of my previous publication (Verseveldt, 1940 1)). Some three species, sufficient material of which for an anatomical examination was available, had then to remain undiscussed; they are: Semperina rubra Kö11., Anthothela macrocalyx (Nutt.) (= Suberia macrocalyx Nutting (1911) = Semperina macrocalyx (Nutt.) Kukenthal (1919)) and Sibogagorgia weberi Stiasny, which species have been examined by me in the same way as formerly the others. | In this paper I will try to solve the controversial points still existing in respect to the species Alcyonium palmatum Pallas, Alcyonium acaule Marion and Alcyonium brioniense Kükenthal. I found that A. brioniense has to be regarded a synonym of A. acaule, and that A. palmatum adriaticum Kükenthal, 1907, ( = A. adriaticum of Kükenthal, 1909) can neither be considered a geographical race nor a valid species. | In the years 1975-77 co-operators of the King Leopold III Biological Station at Laing Island, northern coast of Papua-New Guinea, collected a number of octocorals belonging to the orders Stolonifera and Alcyonacea. The more than eighty species include seven new species : Lobophytum cryptocormum, Sarcophyton mililatensis, Sinularia acetabulata, Sinularia lamellata, Sinularia sobolifera, Xenia actuosa, and Xenia mucosa. | In this revision of the genus Sinularia 93 valid species are recorded. | In 1969 Dr. Arthur G. Humes, Boston University, Massachusetts, U.S.A., collected a number of octocorals at Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands. He found that most of these corals were the hosts of copepods, just like the corals collected by him in the waters north-west of Madagascar (vide Verseveldt, 1969: 3). | INTRODUCTION Verrill (1879: 199-200) described two specimens of Alcyonium collected on the Fishing Bank, east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in 80 fathoms. According to him "they form low, thick, lobular masses", "the base is somewhat spreading" and "the division into rounded or flattened lobes takes place close to the base". He is of opinion that "if not identical with A. digitatum of Europe, it is at least very closely related". More than forty years later Verrill (1922: 20) returns to this question. | The type specimens of Spongodes celosia Lesson and of spicata Wright & Studer are redescribed. They are conspecific and must be called Stereonephthya celosia (Lesson). Most probably, Spongodes digitata Wright & Studer is also a Stereonephthya species. The validity of the genus Neospongodes Kükenthal is discussed. The species N. portoricensis must be transferred to the genus Stereonephthya, but the generic name Neospongodes must be maintained for N. atlantica Kükenthal. N. bahiensis Kükenthal is conspecific with N. atlantica. |
