EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF THE INFUSION OF Ocimum selloi LEAVES USING THE Allium cepa MODEL 196
Mascarenhas Santos, Maria do Socorro; Verdan, Maria Helena; Piva, Raul Cremonezi; Viana, Lucilene Finoto; Cardoso, Claudia Andrea Lima.
Ocimum selloi is a plant used in traditional medicine as a tea; however, no studies have reported the biological activity of the aqueous extract of this plant. This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and mutagenicity of two concentrations of an aqueous extract prepared by infusion of leaves from O. selloi using the Allium cepa model. The O. selloi infusion contained 107.1 ± 1.27 mg GAE g-1. In the A. cepa test, the concentration of the extract influenced the germination index; for 1.0 mg mL-1, it was 60.78% and for 5.0 mg mL-1, it was 51.14%. The evaluation of root development also showed differences between the two concentrations and the negative control, and differences in mitotic index were observed between the concentrations and...

EFFECT OF THE PEEL EXTRACTS FROM TWO CAMPOMANESIA (MYRTACEAE) SPECIES ON ALLIUM CEPA L. (AMARYLLIDACEAE) 196
Silva, Bruno Araújo; Castro, Thiago Luis Aguayo de; Viana, Lucilene Finoto; Mascarenhas Santos, Maria do Socorro; Cardoso, Claudia Andrea Lima.
Species from the genus Campomanesia have been studied due to their biological activity and low toxicity. However, studies on the fruit peel of these species are scarce. In this context, the effects of ethanol extract from the fruit peel of Campomanesia sessiliflora (O. Berg) Mattos (CS) and Campomanesia guazumifolia (Cambess) O. Berg (CG) were evaluated concerning the effect on germination and meristem cells of roots of Allium cepa. The CG ethanolic extract showed flavonoid compounds higher than CS ethanolic extract. The CS extract showed no antioxidant activity. CS showed greater antiproliferative activity with reduced root size in A. cepa seeds. The two extracts did not induce mutagenicity and cell death at the studied concentration of 1 mg mL-1....

Influence of environmental integrity on the feeding biology of Astyanax altiparanae (Garutti & Britski, 2000) in the Ivinhema river basin - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.19497 Biological Sciences
Viana, Lucilene Finoto; Suarez, Yzel Rondon; Lima-Junior, Sidnei Eduardo.
This study aimed at analyzing the influence of different levels of environmental integrity of streams of the Ivinhema river basin (Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil) on the diet of A. altiparanae. Samplings were performed from July 2001 to November 2011 at 101 sites, using sieves, seining and gill nets, and electrofishing. Streams were classified into three levels of environmental integrity. We analyzed 664 stomachs with the methods of frequency of occurrence and volumetric analysis index, combined in the Importance Index (AI). The species was omnivorous, with predominance of allochthonous resources. At the least impacted sites, the most representative resource was allochthonous plant material; and in the altered sites in the rainy period the most consumed...
