Shelters of vampire bats: identifying and mapping in rural areas of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states, Brazil 195
Bernardo-Pedro, T.; Pereira, S. R. F. G.; Chicarino, C. N.; Vieira, L. F. P.; Azevedo, F. A. M.; Meireles, M. A. D.; Câmara, F. P..
In Brazil, there are 150 species of bats, all of them from suborder Microchiroptera. Three of them correspond to vampire bats: Desmodus rotundus, Diphylla ecaudata and Diaemus youngi. The common vampire bat D. rotundus has been the main reservoir of rabies virus in rural areas. Shelters of bats can be classified as natural or artificial. The study was conducted between 2008 and 2011. Twentyone shelters were mapped with a GPS unit. D. rotundus were captured in nine field trips, using mesh nets set up in front of shelters. Ten shelters were mapped in Campos dos Goytacazes; six were artificial and four were natural; they were located at S22°00’26,4’’–W041°40’00,3’’/S21o32’14,7’’–W041o20’31,3’’/S21o48’31,2’’–...

Phylogeographic analysis of rabies virus from domestic herbivores and vampire bats in the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, between the years 2001 and 2006 195
Pereira, S. R. F. G.; Chicarino, C. N.; Vieira, L. F. P.; Castilho, J. G.; Bernardo-Pedro, T.; Kotait, I.; Câmara, F. P..
Rabies is an enzootic disease in Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro state, especially rabies transmitted by vampire bats. All years are accounted large losses of livestock due to this disease in the State. The aim of this study was perform a phylogeographic analysis of rabies virus in the Rio de Janeiro state. It was analyzed a dataset of 58 genetic sequences from the coding region of the N gene. We isolated 35 samples in the Rio de Janeiro between 2001 and 2006 from vampire bats and domestic herbivores in 18 cities of the State. It was retrieved from GenBank 15 and 8 sequences from São Paulo and Minas Gerais states, respectively. With the Beast v1.6 software package, the group of sequences was analyzed by Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method with the...

Phylogeography of the rabies virus isolated from canids in the North and Northeast of Brazil 195
Carnieli Jr, P.; Oliveira, R. N.; Castilho, J. G.; Vieira, L. F. P..
Antigenic variant 2 of the Rabies Virus (RABV), typically found in dogs in Brazil, still circulates in the North and Northeast of Brazil in spite of mass vaccination campaigns against rabies in domestic animals. Previous studies have shown that this variant is made up of two main genetic lineages: one found in dogs (Canis familiaris) and another typically found in wild canids, particularly the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), which is known in Brazil as cachorro do mato. C. thous is currently the only wild land species in which RABV is continually isolated, with an average of 20 cases/year. Although previous studies and phylogenetic analyses of the N and G genes and intergenic G-L region all confirmed the existence of these two genetic lineages, the way...

Simplifying science and technology to clarify and ask the rancher from Rio de Janeiro state everything about rural rabies 195
Meireles, M. A. D.; Pereira, S. R. F. G.; Bernardo-Pedro, T.; Florido, V. A.; Oliveira, A. C.; Linhares, J. M.; Vieira, L. F. P.; Chicarino, C. N..
Rabies is a contagious disease of great interest to the livestock and public health. The etiologic agent is a neurotropic virus (family Rhabdoviridae and genus Lyssavirus), which affects the central nervous system. The disease has an anthropozoonotic character, and all mammals may be infected and develop it. Rabies affects domestic herbivores (livestock), and its main transmitter, in rural areas, is the “common vampire bat”, Desmodus rotundus. This research aimed at education in health and surveillance of rabies, in a simple and playful, to the cattle ranchers of the Northern and Northwestern regions of Rio de Janeiro State, clarifying aspects about rural rabies. The following municipalities/ locations were visited: Batatal, Boa Vista, Cardoso Moreira,...
