Microparticulate diets as first food for gilthead sea bream larva (Sparus aurata): study of fatty acid incorporation ArchiMer
Robin, Jean; Vincent, Benoit.
Recent advances have led to the development of inert diets for first-feeding marine fish larvae. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate fatty acid (FA) incorporation into larva using practical-type and semipurified diets as first food for larvae. Experimental microparticulate diets were fed to gilthead sea bream larvae, right from the mouth opening to day 21 post hatching. Five basal diets were compared, using fish meat or casein as main protein sources, and fish protein concentrate or casein hydrolysates and algae powder (Schizochytrium). Diets contained soybean lecithin to provide polar lipids and this also provided a high linoleic acid (18:2n-6) content. n-3 HUFA (1.5-1.7% DM) were mainly in dietary neutral lipids, with a part in polar lipids...

Melinge, Y; Lanos, C.; Vincent, Benoit.
In this article, we demonstrate the evolution law of the dynamic friction coefficient of a sea-bottom concentrated suspension on a moving solid body. The hypothesis of a Mohr-Coulomb type behaviour at the interfaces is expressed and confirmed experimentally. In order to carry out these experiments, a tribometer and a friction parameter calculation model are developed. These experiments are part of a study on the environmental impact of trawls, the gear used for fishing. They are conducted in collaboration with the Ifremer Lorient.

Etude dynamique d'un train de pêche complet ArchiMer
Marichal, Dominique; Vincent, Benoit.
We present a complete numerical model of a full trawl gear and the vessel. The trawler is modelled by equations and hydrodynamic coefficients which are classically used for ship behaviour and ship manoeuvrability studies. It is submitted to the action of the warps. The warps and the net are part of a complex fluid-structure coupling problem. The net is a supple structure and its shape depends on the forces that are acting on it. Now, these forces themselves depend of the net meshes shape. The otter boards are most particular wings. We have studied one particular type. Then all these elements have been put together by writing their dynamics equations. A time step method enables the calculation of the shape, the forces and the motion of each element in the...

Etude numérique et expérimentale des écoulements guidés par une paroi perméable axisymétrique. Application à la modélisation des chaluts pour en améliorer la sélectivité. ArchiMer
Vincent, Benoit.
We present a numerical method for solving the turbulent, steady, incompressible, internal and external flow to a permeable axisymetric surface. This surface is placed in a uniform flow parallel to its axis. This method is based on the Navier - Stokes equations. Closure of the equations is realised by the K-epsilon turbulence model with specific conditions at the permeable surface. The model for the normal velocity component at the permeable surface is the Darcy equation. Tangential velocity component is given by the Saffman equation witch is modified. The second part is an experimental study of velocities and turbulence rates for axisymetric models (cylinders and cones). Comparison between calculation and experimental results shows that hypothesis are...

Study of the manoeuvrability and security of a trawl gear ArchiMer
Marichal, Dominique; Vincent, Benoit.
A complete method is presented for determining the static and dynamic behaviour of a fishing gear. The net, which is very flexible, is modelised by a set of rigid bars. The hydrodynamic forces, applied to each bar, are determined by combining and generalizing the Landweber and Morison hypothesis. A CFD method is used to calculate the forces on trawl doors. The fundamental principle of dynamics is completed with length equations expressing the elasticity of the bars. It leads to a set of second order non-linear differential equations, which is solved using a Runge-Kutta method. We will now present a few examples of the various applications of our works : the study of the trawl gear equilibrium in a uniform flow, an example of manoeuvrability (gyration of...

Small fishing vessels study and modelling for the improvement of the behaviour in extreme seas ArchiMer
Pages, Antoine; Maisonneuve, Jean-jacques; Wandji, Clève; Corrignan, Philippe; Vincent, Benoit.
Commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous primary activities. Most of the 24000 yearly accidents identified by IMO are occurring on small vessels. The French SOS-Stabilité research project aims at better knowing and modelling dynamic stability issues occurring on small fishing vessels (12 to 24 m), prior to the development of solutions for improving their behaviour, through the evolution of the ship design and through the design of appropriate embedded systems. This pa-per presents the first part of the project: sea andmodel tests, development of a ship behaviour time-domain simulator (including fishing gear modelling capabilities) and first validation of this simula-tion tool.

A methodological framework for characterizing fish swimming and escapement behaviors in trawls ArchiMer
Robert, Marianne; Cortay, Aurore; Morfin, Marie; Simon, Julien; Morandeau, Fabien; Deneubourg, Jean Louis; Vincent, Benoit.
Knowledge about fish behavior is crucial to be able to influence the capture process and catch species composition. The rapid expansion of the use of underwater cameras has facilitated unprecedented opportunities for studying the behavior of species interacting with fishing gears in their natural environment. This technological advance would greatly benefit from the parallel development of dedicated methodologies accounting for right-censored observations and variable observation periods between individuals related to instrumental, environmental and behavioral events. In this paper we proposed a methodological framework, based on a parametric Weibull mixture model, to describe the process of escapement attempts through time, test effects of covariates and...

Vincent, Benoit; Simon, Julien; Vacherot, Jean-philippe; Morandeau, Fabien; Larnaud, Pascal; Kopp, Dorothee; Mehault, Sonia; Morfin, Marie; Savina-rolland, Marie; Marc, Emilie.
The Lorient flume tank is an hydrodynamic facility available for any qualification and observation of submerged objects in still or moving water. It is a closed loop circulating tank filled with fresh water.  The fluid is moved with a 70 kW pump-motor with a velocity between 0 and 1 m/s and homogenized with a series of pressure drop systems. The overall dimensions are 24.50 m long, 7.50m wide and 3.30 m high. The part where experiments can be set up is 12m long, 2.6 m wide and 1.5 m deep.  A mobile bottom belt can be synchronized with the water flow velocity and enables to simulate the seabed velocity relatively to a towed object. The overall process of the facility is controlled by a user friendly interface.

Effects of temperature on the growth of pollack (Pollachius pollachius) juveniles ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Buchet, Vincent; Vincent, Benoit; Le Delliou, Herve; Quemener, Loic.
Growth of juvenile pollack was assessed at five constant temperatures (9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 degrees C) in an 84-day trial. Duplicate groups of 75 fish (initial weight 143 +/- 2 g) were held in O-2 saturated water (102-103% saturation) and fed to apparent satiation. Growth increased as temperature increased from 9 degrees C up to a plateau at 12-15 degrees C (NS differences between 12 and 15 degrees C) followed by a decrease from 18 degrees C. No growth occurred at 21 degrees C. For the overall period, specific growth rates were 0.52% and 0.53% day(-1) at 12 and 15 degrees C compared to 0.40% day(-1) at 18 degrees C. Feed intake was maximum at 15-18 degrees C (0.68-0.69% day(-1)) and it was significantly lower at 21 degrees C (0.45% day(-1)). Apparent feed...

The low impact of fish traps on the seabed makes it an eco-friendly fishing technique ArchiMer
Kopp, Dorothee; Coupeau, Yann; Vincent, Benoit; Morandeau, Fabien; Méhault, Sonia; Simon, Julien.
Besides understanding the effects of fishing on harvested fish stocks, effects on non-target species, habitats and seafloor integrity also need to be considered. Static fishing gears have often been mentioned as a lower impact fishing alternative to towed gears, although studies examining their actual impact on the seafloor are scarce. In this study, we aimed to describe fish trap movements on the seafloor related to soaking time and trap retrieval. Impacts on the seafloor of lightweight rectangular traps and heavier circular traps were compared. We used 3D video cameras to estimate sweeping motion on the seabed and penetration into the sediment during soaking time. The area and distance swept by each type of trap during retrieval was determined by a...

A Numerical Investigation for Underwater Fluid-Netting Interaction Problem ArchiMer
Mnassri, Ilyes; Le Touze, David; Vincent, Benoit; Alessandrini, Bertrand.
The present work investigates an application-oriented issue in the marine and fisheries researches domain. However much trawl structure codes that simulate dynamic behavior of submerged nets, in continuous interaction with surrounded ocean water, still need more accuracy and precision due to the fact that the sea water is mainly considered as a fluid with a uniform velocity and intensity, and so the effects of small turbulence rates were neglected. When this little inaccuracy occurs in the first step of the net displacement prediction, a large error could manifests in the form of the simulated net, and as consequence, drag forces wrongly estimated. In the purpose to overcome the lack of data information exchange during the fluid structure interaction, a co...

Development of a model for flexural rigidity of fishing net with a spring mass approach and its inverse identification by metaheuristic parametric optimization. ArchiMer
Vincent, Benoit; Di Cesare, Noëlie; Simon, Julien.
The assessment of mesh resistance to opening is a key factor when coming to fishing gear design to study or optimize the fishing selectivity process. Different authors proposed methodologies to achieve twine flexural rigidity identification and mesh opening angle at rest. Their experimental protocols could rely on complex installations and instrumentation, and identification needs dedicated models or software with possible important set up time. Sometimes, different flexural rigidity and rest angle values for a given netting type were proposed depending on identification or experimental conditions, leading to difficulties to choose a value for implementation in netting structures simulation software. The new methodology proposed in this article is based on...

Influence of bottom trawling on sediment resuspension in the 'Grande-Vasière' area (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Mengual, Baptiste; Cayocca, Florence; Le Hir, Pierre; Draye, Robin; Laffargue, Pascal; Vincent, Benoit; Garlan, Thierry.
Sea trials were performed on two zones with different fishing efforts on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ('Grande-VasiSre' area of muddy sand) in order to assess particulate matter resuspension and seabed disturbances (i.e., penetration, reworking, grain size changes) induced by different types of trawls. Optical and acoustic measurements made in the water column indicate a significant trawling-induced resuspension mainly due to the scraping action of doors. It manifests as a highly dynamic turbid plume confined near the seabed, where suspended sediment concentrations can reach 200 mg l(-1). Concentration levels measured behind an "alternative" configuration (trawls with jumper doors instead of classical doors penetrating the sediment) are...

A new generation of tools for trawls Dynamic numerical simulation ArchiMer
Vincent, Benoit.
IFREMER and ECN have been working together for almost ten years on problems related to the numerical simulation of trawls and more generally the numerical simulation of any kind of fishing gear. To develop such a simulation tool, we need to build (i) a software in which all the parameters of the fishing gear are taken into account; (ii) a software that computes the physical behaviour of the fishing gear (static or dynamic); (iii) a software to visualise the results of calculations. The most complex part of this work most of the time rests in the point (i), because of the huge amount of parameters and elements of an actual fishing net.   We have already developed a tool (point (i), named Cachalot) to describe a trawl. However, this software was designed to...

Towed Gear Optimisation, application to trawls ArchiMer
Roullot, Jean; Vincent, Benoit.
IFREMER has been developing and commercialising scientific software to help the conception and optimisation of any kind of trawl. This software named DynamiT makes available a "virtual flume tank" where tests can be achieved without any constraint due to scale effects or other limitation when physically testing out. DynamiT has been used numbers of times to simulate and optimise trawls by different net makers and by IFREMER. The software is based on the resolution of the mechanics (structure and hydrodynamic) equations of a model describing the actual trawl and its rigging. The "user friendly" interface allows the user to iterate "modification and observations" cycles to reach an optimised state of the fishing gear. The process can be used to reduce the...

Report from a cruise onboard RV G. O. Sars 22.11 – 03.12.2008: Comparing the impact of two bottom trawls ArchiMer
Vold, Aud; Breen, Michael; Hansen, Kurt; Vincent, Benoit; Zachariassen, Kristian.
The final research cruise described in this report had the objective to compare the physical and biological impact of the bottom trawl modifications developed during the EU DEGREE project to a standard bottom trawl used in the Barents Sea cod fisheries. The “new” trawl was fitted with the last modification of the plate gear developed during the project as well as trawl doors (standard Thyborøn doors) rigged to barely touch the bottom. The commercial trawl used for comparison was rigged with a conventional rockhopper ground gear and the doors were rigged to go heavy on the bottom as normally rigged during commercial bottom trawling. We looked for combinations enabling us to fish with the doors off, or nearly off, the bottom, while the ground gear was still...
