The OTEC site in French Polynesian Island (in front of Tahiti harbor) has been studied with the most performant tools used in modern marine geosciences (Multibeam echosounder, deep tow photography, deep submersible, side-scan sonar,...). The main objective of the SAR survey was a precise mapping of the boundaries between the major domains (basalts outcrops, sediment cover area, blocks, wrecks). The Seabeam data and the Cyana in situ observations were used to calibrate the side-scan image and to propose an interpretation. |

Two site surveys inside the French mining area of the Clipperton Fracture Zone have been imaged with the SAR system. The main results of this cruise are: a good image of the obstacles for the mining-vehicles (density, geometric feature, localization); and the compilation of the data (bathymetry, sonar, mud penetrator 3.5 KC, photo, etc...) on the site survey for the mining test gives a complete view of the relationship between nodules and their environment. |

Hydrofast Cruise of the R.V. Jean Charcot addressed the important problem of the variation of hydrothermal activity along the strike of the Ridge over a distance of 100 km with respect to the structure of the ridge axis. This cruise was conducted along the East Pacific Rise between the OSC at 11 degree 45'N and the topographic high at 13 degree N. To reach that objective, a new tool, the dynamic hydrocast, was used. This technique obtains average samples mile per mile, horizontally, at 4 different depths above the bottom. Temperature is recorded at the same time. In addition, the side-scan sonar SAR gave a continuous picture of the fissures along the strike and of the different facies within the 300 to 400 m width of the axial graben. A magnetometer and a... |

The Krakatau project has been launched as a regional study along the Indonesian island arc aiming at understanding the response of an island arc and of its fore-arc to an increased obliquity in the convergence along its subducting border. Along the Sunda island arc, convergence varies from near-to-normal along Java to increasingly oblique along Sumatra, and to near-to-tangent along the Andaman-Nicobar ridge. As a result of this increased obliquity, it has been assumed that the fore-arc region has been mobilized, as a whole as a series of segmented units with a resulting strike-slip motion parallel to the island-arc. |
