Delving into Choice Internals: A Joint Discrete Choice/Attribute Rating Model AgEcon

Multi-attribute modeling has rapidly progressed from being a novelty to becoming a widely used tool of economic research. When both choice and attribute ratings data are available, a model that makes joint use of both offers informative inference opportunities. In the present study we develop a joint model which utilizes both choice and ratings data, allows for scale usage heterogeneity, is robust to violations of utility continuity and completeness. The model is used to obtain WTP estimates for genetically-modified content and country-of-origin attributes in an survey-based study of Canola oil labeling. A Pseudo-Sequential Choice Model for Valuing Multiple Environmental Policy or Program Components in Contingent Valuation Applications AgEcon

The study proposes a discrete-choice model for environmental policy/program valuation, to be used in cases when several policies are valued sequentially. The stochastic specification of the model is consistent with the transitivity and continuity axioms of utility analysis. An empirical methodology for the model is suggested. An application of this model to WTP estimation for Little Tennessee River watershed ecosystem restoration is provided. Findings from the application agree with the hypothesized agent's behavior.

USE OF CHAMBERLAIN FIXED EFFECTS APPROACH TO ESTIMATE WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR LITTLE TENNESSEE RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVES AgEcon

The paper discusses an application of Chamberlain's fixed effects model to contingent valuation method survey data obtained for eight management alternatives for the Little Tennessee River basin. The advantages of using this approach versus cross-sectional logit, pooled logit, and cross-sectional logit with lags are discussed and a technique to obtain willingness-to-pay estimates from estimated coefficients is offered. Drawbacks of using Chamberlain's fixed effects model, difficulties encountered, and directions for further research are presented.

The assumption of independence of irrelevant alternatives in a sequential contingent valuation format should be questioned. Statistically, most valuation studies treat nonindependence as a consequence of unobserved individual effects. Another approach is to consider an inferential process in which any particular choice is part of a general choosing strategy of a survey respondent. A stochastic model is suggested, consistent with the reflexivity, transitivity, and continuity axioms of utility analysis. An application of this theoretical model to the valuation of watershed ecosystem restoration demonstrates that an empirical model recognizing reflexivity and transitivity, and also allowing for continuity, shows the highest in-sample predictive ability.

Are Country of Origin and Non-GM Premiums Invariant to Experimental Auction Structure? AgEcon

A revealed preference auction experiment is used to elicit values for two attributes, one relating to genetic modification and the other to country of origin of the food product, canola oil. A premium for a non-GM canola oil is found to approximate CA$0.4 to $0.6 per litre. Auction format effects are found and hypotheses as to why these may occur are suggested.

NONPARAMETRIC ANALYSIS OF ATTITUDES TOWARD RISKY CROPS: A PLANT MOLECULAR FARMING CASE STUDY AgEcon

Research on plant molecular farming (PMF) is supported by public and private sectors in Canada. This may lead to benefits of new or cheaper medicines, industrial products and foods, but also be the source of appreciable risks to food safety from contamination by PMF materials, as well as potential environmental risks and costs. This study uses data from a 2005 nation-wide Canadian survey to gain insights into citizens’ perceptions of PMF benefits and risks. A series of nonparametric tests are conducted on ordinal survey data on risk and benefit assessments of respondents.
