A nationwide interdisciplinary intervention study in 106 German organic dairy farms was carried out in order to develop preventive animal health management strategies for mastitis and metabolic disorders and to implement and validate this concept. After an initial farm visit focusing on the health situation and the potential risk factors includ-ing housing, herd management, feeding and forage production, individual evidence-based advice was provided by the project team. Intervention measures to improve herd health were implemented and their effectiveness was monitored for two years. Udder health regarding milk somatic cell count and treatment incidence for mastitis improved significantly, whereas the percentage of dry-off-treatments with antibiotics and... |

The aim of the study was to proof the effect of animal health on the economical suc-cess in organic dairy farms. From August 2002 till September 2003 25 dairy farms in lower saxony were regularly visited, while economical and health data were collected. The economical success is highly related to the milk yield per cow. The higher the profit, the higher the percentage of cows per herd with a somatic cell count under 100.000 SCC and the higher the rates of clinical mastitis or hypocalcemia. In general there is a relation between animal health and profit in organic dairy herds but this study proofs that higher milk yield leads to higher profit in spite of an increasing amount of illness. |

The monthly individual somatic cell count can be used to interpret udder health status not only for individual animals but also on dairy herd level. 73 dairy herds in Lower Saxony were analyzed based on 2011 milk recording data. The data show that udder health status is driven by very high new infection rates in both dry period and lactation in organic dairy farms. Due to legislative rules antibiotic therapy plays only a small role in combating mastitis. Therefore working standards which are able to reduce the new infection rate must be implemented in dairy herds. The used analyzing system allows the identification of predominant udder health problems on single herd level. Consultants, vets and farmers should be familiar with these epidemiological key... |

In 2011 a survey was carried out in order to find out how many cows are dehorned on organic dairy farms in Lower Saxony. Furthermore the farmers’ reasons for dehorning as well as their willingness to stop polling calves were investigated. All organic dairy farms in Lower Saxony were interviewed by a questionnaire based telephone interview. Interviews were conducted with 92 farms, seven of these farms with tied housing (not further considered) and 85 of these farms with loose housing. Nearly all dairy cows on surveyed farms (Median = 100 %) were polled. In 58 organic dairy herds more than 90 % and in 16 herds less than 50 % of cows were dehorned. The main reasons for dehorning that were mentioned by the farmers were fear of injuries to animals (95 %),... |

As a part of the study „Health and performance of dairy cows in organic farming from an interdisciplinary point of view – an (intervention-) study on metabolic disorders and mastitis with regard to forage production, feeding management and husbandry practices” different udder health and metabolic parameters were determined in 106 dairy farms in Germany between January 2008 and April 2010. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare udder health and metabolic data in dry period and early lactation within the scope of a preliminary analysis. The analysis shows that relations exist between disturbances of the metabolism health and the udder health. Significant correlations between ketosis and hypocalcämia and udder health make clear that their... |

Consumers of organic products expect very high food quality as well as speciesappropriate husbandry, high animal health and best organic feeding. Studies showed that in some sections in organic dairy farms animal health is not better than in conventional farms. Kuh-M is the first quality management system specifically for organic dairy farms. It is based on an internet-database where the results of the monthly milkcontrol and the ingredients of the bulk-milk are presented in a benchmarking. With these results it is possible to appreciate the status quo of the animal health like subclinical metabolic changes, udder health, fertility and yield. Members can use the database to compare their results with the pool of the other members to evaluate their... |

During a dynamic cohort study performed in 5 selected organic farms of Lower Saxony between January 2004 and May 2005, udder health data and therapeutic measures were collected. The aim of the study was to compare the usually practiced medical treatments of mastitic udders in organic farms with the scientific realizations. The farms in particular distinguish through a good compliance in previous studies. In the entire year 2004 the study farms removed 5.8% +/- 2.8% (min. 2.9 - max. 9.0) of the animals due to mastitis problems. Only little differences regarding the prevalence of mastitis between the five farms were found while the udder health situation in all examined herds improved from summer to winter. Dominating mastitis pathogens were CNS und... |

The aim of this pilot prevalence study was to investigate the Oxacillin resistance of 73 Staphylococcus (S.) strains from 29 organic dairy farms in Lower Saxony. The strains were isolated from nasal mucosa and hand skin of milkers, herd bulk milk and mastitis milk samples. After strain identification, the Oxacillin resistance was measured by Etest. 23 strains were identified as S. aureus, four as S. hyicus, 15 as S. xylosus and 31 as other coagulase negative staphylococci. Because of their minimum inhibition concentration (mic) between 0.5 and 1 mg/mL four S. aureus isolates were assigned to borderline Oxacillin resistant S. aureus. Nine coagulase negative isolates had this property too. In total 19 staphylococci isolates had a mic > 1 mg/L and... |

As a part of the study „Health and performance of dairy cows in organic farming from an interdisciplinary point of view – an (intervention-) study on metabolic disorders and mastitis with regard to forage production, feeding management and husbandry practices” quarter milk samples from cows at dry off and after calving were taken by farmers in 101 dairy farms in Germany between January 2008 and April 2010. The objective of this study was to evaluate mastitis prevalence at dry off and at calving and the evaluation of different therapeutic regimes at dry off. 3460 cows from 101 dairy farms were examined. Mastitis prevalence at dry off was comparable to conventional farms. At calving organic farms have high mastitis prevalence due to a low cure rate and a... |

The use of bedding materials of natural source is a requirement of the EU regulation of organic husbandry considering the needs of animals for dry comfortable lying areas. However, organic bedding materials provide an environment for mastitis pathogens, too and therefore increase the risk of intramammary infections if not well managed. |
