Mediterranean ocean colour Level 3 operational multi-sensor processing ArchiMer
Volpe, Gianluca; Colella, Simone; Brando, Vittorio E.; Forneris, Vega; La Padula, Flavio; Di Cicco, Annalisa; Sammartino, Michela; Bracaglia, Marco; Artuso, Florinda; Santoleri, Rosalia.
The Mediterranean near-real-time multi-sensor processing chain has been set up and is operational in the framework of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS). This work describes the main steps operationally performed to enable single ocean colour sensors to enter the multi-sensor processing applied to the Mediterranean Sea by the Ocean Colour Thematic Assembly Centre within CMEMS. Here, the multi-sensor chain takes care of reducing the inter-sensor bias before data from different sensors are merged together. A basin-scale in situ bio-optical dataset is used both to fine tune the algorithms for the retrieval of phytoplankton chlorophyll and the attenuation coefficient of light, Kd, and to assess the uncertainty associated with them....

Retrieval of Particulate Backscattering Using Field and Satellite Radiometry: Assessment of the QAA Algorithm ArchiMer
Pitarch, Jaime; Bellacicco, Marco; Organelli, Emanuele; Volpe, Gianluca; Colella, Simone; Vellucci, Vincenzo; Marullo, Salvatore.
Particulate optical backscattering (bbp) is a crucial parameter for the study of ocean biology and oceanic carbon estimations. In this work, bbp retrieval, by the quasi-analytical algorithm (QAA), is assessed using a large in situ database of matched bbp and remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs). The QAA is also applied to satellite Rrs (ESA OC-CCI project) as well, after their validation against in situ Rrs. Additionally, the effect of Raman Scattering on QAA retrievals is studied. Results show negligible biases above random noise when QAA-derived bbp is compared to in situ bbp. In addition, Rrs from the CCI archive shows good agreement with in situ data. The QAA’s functional form of spectral backscattering slope, as derived from in situ radiometry, is...

The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) provides regular and systematic reference information on the physical and biogeochemical ocean and sea-ice state for the global ocean and the European regional seas. CMEMS serves a wide range of users (more than 15,000 users are now registered to the service) and applications. Observations are a fundamental pillar of the CMEMS value-added chain that goes from observation to information and users. Observations are used by CMEMS Thematic Assembly Centres (TACs) to derive high-level data products and by CMEMS Monitoring and Forecasting Centres (MFCs) to validate and constrain their global and regional ocean analysis and forecasting systems. This paper presents an overview of CMEMS, its evolution,...
