Comparing on site human and video counts at Igarapava fish ladder, south eastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Bowen,Mark D.; Marques,Simone; Silva,Luiz G. M.; Vono,Volney; Godinho,Hugo P..
On site human observations and video images were collected and compared at the window of the Igarapava Dam fish ladder (IDFL), rio Grande , Southeastern Brazil, between March 1st and June 30th, 2004. We conducted four experiments with two humans (Observer 1 and Observer 2) observing fish passage in the IDFL window while a Sony 3CCD video camera (Observer 3) recorded fish passage at the same time. Experiments, each one hour in length, were distributed throughout the diel cycle using full spectrum lights. We identified fish species, the number of individuals for each species, and the real time that they passed. Counts from each human observer were compared to the video counts. The fish species most commonly observed in the window were - curimba (Prochilodus...

Reproductive activity and recruitment of the yellow-mandi Pimelodus maculatus (Teleostei: Pimelodidae) in the Igarapava Reservoir, Grande River, Southeast Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Maia,Bruno Pereira; Ribeiro,Sandra Maria Franco; Bizzotto,Paula Maciel; Vono,Volney; Godinho,Hugo Pereira.
The catfish yellow-mandi, Pimelodus maculatus, is a valuable sporting and commercial fish of inland waters of Southeast Brazil including Igarapava Reservoir. It is a short-distance migrant that needs shorter stretches of free-flowing river to spawn compared to other Neotropical migrants. Igarapava Reservoir is one the 13 hydroelectric reservoirs, arranged in a cascade fashion, impounding the 1,300 km-long Grande River, SE Brazil. In this paper, we examined reproductive features and recruitment of the yellow-mandi in Igarapava Reservoir. We also evaluated the role of the Igarapava Fish Ladder (IFL) built around Igarapava Dam on the sustainability of its fisheries. Female adult yellow-mandis that were gill netted (nets of 8-20 cm stretch-mesh) during the...

Presence of the walking catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) (Siluriformes, Clariidae) in Minas Gerais state hydrographie basins, Brazil Zoologia
Alves,Carlos Bernardo Mascarenhas; Vono,Volney; Vieira,Fábio.
The first official occurrence of the exotic species Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) in the Rio Paraopeba (São Francisco river basin), the Rio Grande (Paraná river basin), and the Rio Doce (Doce river basin), is reported, with comments on the possible ecological consequences and on the conservation of freshwater fish biodiversity due to non-native species introductions.

Biologia reprodutiva de três espécies simpátricas de peixes neotropicais: Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae), Leporinus amblyrhynchus Garavello & Britski e Schizodon nasutus Kner (Characiformes, Anostomidae) do recém-formado Reservatório de Miranda, Alto Paraná Zoologia
Vono,Volney; Silva,Luiz Gustavo M.; Maia,Bruno P.; Godinho,Hugo P..
The reproductive activity parameters of the teleosts Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803, Leporinus amblyrhynchus Garavello & Britski, 1987 and Schizodon nasutus Kner, 1859 was evaluated at a newly formed reservoir in the Araguari River, Paraná River basin, Southeast Brazil. The fishes were captured by gill nets bimonthly from November 1997 to November 1998 at three sampling stations. The stages of gonad development were identified macroscopically in the field and then confirmed by histological analysis in the laboratory. The females of all species reached larger standard length than the males. Pimelodus maculatus in reproductive activity were captured only in November, 1997 and January, 1998 whereas L. amblyrhynchus and S. nasutus were in activity...
