The integration of dairy heifers into the cow herd shortly before their first parturition is a common management practice also in organic farming and is associated with stress. In this study we investigated whether the ability to cope with such challenges is affected by experiences during early age. Three groups of heifers which differed with respect to the contact to their mother during the first 12 weeks of life were compared. At the age of 25+/-0.2 months heifers were integrated individually into the cow herd and observed for 33 hours. Heifers reared with contact to their mother used the cubicles quicker and more consistently and also tended to differ in the social behaviour compared to the heifers reared without mother. These preliminary results... |

In a cross-sectional study we investigated effects of milkers' attitudes and behavior on cows' behavior as well as their impacts on udder health while also considering herd management factors. All 46 investigated Swiss dairy herds were kept in loose housing systems. All farms participated in an extension program for preventive mastitis control. Milkers' attitudes were assessed by a questionnaire. Milkers' acoustic and tactile behavior as well as cow behavior were observed during milking. The cows' avoidance distances in the barn towards an unknown person were recorded. Furthermore, herd management factors were assessed by questionnaire guided interviews and observations, respectively. Udder health was evaluated using the indicators prevalence of quarters... |

Potentielle Risiko- bzw.... |

In a cross-sectional study, we investigated the effects of human-animal interactions and management factors on udder health in 46 Swiss dairy herds living in loose-housing systems on farms that participated in the Swiss dairy farm network “pro-Q.” The human-animal relationship was measured by observing milkers´ behavior, cows’ behavior during milking, and cows’ avoidance distance in the barn. Management factors were assessed by questionnaire-guided interviews and observations. Udder health was evaluated using indicators that were calculated from milk recording data over a period of 1 yr before assessment: (1) average somatic cell scores (SCS) per herd and (2) incidence of new infections per herd (NEWINF); and indicators that were calculated from quarter... |

he aim of the paper is to present new results on the association of human-animal relationship (HAR) and dairy cow health and to present a framework on the way of action of the HAR. 80 organic and conventional dairy herds in cubicle loose housing were visited once. Animal health parameters and influencing factors HAR, housing and management were recorded. The relative importance of factors for the prevalence of lameness, lesions at carpal and tarsal joints and somatic cell counts (SCC) was determined by multivariate analysis. Behaviour and attitudes of stockpeople were predictors for prevalence of lameness, SCC and lesions at the carpal joints, supporting a direct effect of the quality of the HAR on health. Further, the better the stockperson's relationship... |
