Djurmaterialets betydelse i ekologisk grisproduktion Organic Eprints
Wallenbeck, Anna; Lundeheim, Nils; Rydhmer, Lotta.

Relationships between sow and piglet traits in organic production outdoors and indoors Organic Eprints
Wallenbeck, Anna; Rydhmer, Lotta.
The aim of this study was to describe sow and piglet traits and the relationship between them in animals bred for conventional production kept in organic outdoor and indoor environments. 40 sows were studied during a seven week lactation. In parity one and three the sows farrowed outdoors (April to September) in huts and were moved to family grazing paddocks two weeks post partum (pp). In parity two and four the sows farrowed indoors (October to March) in individual pens and were moved to family pens with deep straw bedding two weeks pp. High backfat and weight loss during lactation was related to low piglet mortality and the relationship was stronger outdoors than indoors. Large litters had lower piglet growth than small litters and the relationship was...

Ovarian Activity and Oestrous Signs among Group-Housed, Lactating Sows: Influence of Behaviour, Environment and Production Organic Eprints
Hultén, Fredrik; Wallenbeck, Anna; Rydhmer, Lotta.
Animal welfare concerns require the development of housing systems that allow the animals to express their natural behaviour. One example of this is the group-housing system for lactating sows. The present study aimed at exploring ovarian activity in such a system. Thirty-eight sows farrowing individually outdoors during spring and summer, and indoors during autumn and winter, and group-housed in groups of four during weeks 3–7 of the lactation period, were monitored regarding reproductive functions, behaviour and production during their first to fourth lactation period. Average ovulation frequency during lactation was 47%. Only 50% of these ovulating cases were accompanied by a standing oestrus. Lactational ovulation frequency was higher in later parities...

Breeding Goals for Organic Dairy Farming in Denmark Based on the Principles of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Slagboom, Margot; Wallenbeck, Anna; Rydhmer, Lotta; Thomasen, Jørn Rind; Kargo, Morten.
Organic dairy farming (ODF) is different from conventional dairy farming in management practices, but so far the same breeding goal (BG) is used, based on the same economic models (EM). However, ODF is based on the principles of organic agriculture defined by the IFOAM, which are not easily interpreted in economic terms and it may be questionable to use a BG for ODF based on EM. In this study we set up three BGs for ODF in Denmark, one based on the principles of organic agriculture, one focusing on roughage consumption and feed efficiency, and one focusing on disease resistance. A questionnaire and desired gains index were used to set up the BGs. Correlations between these BGs and BGs based on EM were low. Which BG would be best suitable to use for ODF in...

Production level, fertility, health traits, and longevity in local and commercial dairy breeds under organic production conditions in Austria, Switzerland, Poland, and Sweden Organic Eprints
Bieber, Anna; Wallenbeck, Anna; Leiber, Florian; Fuerst-Waltl, Birgit; Winckler, Christoph; Gullstrand, Patricia; Walczak, Jacek; Wójcik, Piotr; Spengler Neff, Anet.
Our aim was to map the performance of local (native) dairy cattle breeds in Austria, Switzerland, Poland, and Sweden with regard to production, fertility, longevity, and health-associated traits and to compare them with commercial (modern) breeds. For this purpose, we analyzed test-day records (July 1, 2011, to June 30, 2014) and treatment records (Austria, Sweden) of cows managed on organic farms. We performed country-wise comparisons of 123,415 lactations from Original Braunvieh (OB) and Grey Cattle (AL) with Braunvieh (BV; Brown Swiss blood >60%) in Switzerland; AL with BV (Brown Swiss blood >50%) in Austria; Polish Black and White (ZB), Polish Red and White (ZR), and Polish Red (RP) with Polish Holstein Friesian (PHF) in Poland; and Swedish Red...

Organic dairy breeding lines? – Possibilities and Requirements Organic Eprints
Kargo, Morten; Thomasen, Jørn Rind; Wallenbeck, Anna; Hjortø, Line; Slagboom, Margot.
Genomic breeding schemes with large cow reference populations will give room for more line division within dairy cattle breeding and therefore also for organic breeding lines. The reason is that different economic values between organic and conventional production systems are expected in the future and the existence of genotype by environment interaction will presumably be even more recognized. Therefore, correlations between organic and conventional breeding goals are expected to be significantly lower than one. This in combination with increased future “break even” correlations opens up for specific organic breeding lines.

Simulating consequences of choosing a breeding goal for organic dairy production Organic Eprints
Slagboom, Margot; Wallenbeck, Anna; Hjortø, Line; Sørensen, Anders Christian; Thomasen, Jørn Rind; Kargo, Morten.
Six different breeding goal (BG) scenarios were developed and simulated for organic and conventional dairy production, to study the effect on genetic change for specific traits. The first two BGs (BG1 and BG2) were based on economic weights from SimHerd simulations for a conventional and an organic dairy system in Denmark. The third BG (BG3) was based on weights derived from a farmer preference survey for organic farmers. The fourth BG (BG4) was based on the four organic principles defined by the IFOAM, and on the results of a questionnaire that was sent out to farmers, researchers and experts in the area of organic dairy husbandry. The fifth and sixth BGs (BG5 and BG6) were based on BG4, but altered to put more emphasis on roughage consumption and disease...

Improving animal health and welfare in organic cattle milk production through breeding and management Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Jan Tind; Winckler, Christoph; Wallenbeck, Anna; Spengler, Anet; Knierim, Ute; Kargo, Morten; Walczak, Jacek; Ribikauskas, Vytautas.
Overall summary of main results, discussion and conclusions WP1 The aim in WP1 was to map the performance of local breeds compared to commercial dairy breeds on organic farms in Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland and Germany with regard to health associated traits, fertility and production traits. In a study covering the whole population of the selected breeds, managed under organic conditions during the period 1.7.2011 to 30.6.2014, we found lower milk yields for local breeds. In general we found better fertility performance (less days open, shorter calving intervals, lower number of inseminations) for at least one of the local breeds involved in each country. We also detected lower proportions of milk records with somatic cell counts above 100.000...

Risks and opportunities of increasing yields in organic farming. A review Organic Eprints
Röös, E.; Mie, A.; Wivstad, Maria; Salomon, E.; Johansson, B.; Gunnarsson, Stefan; Wallenbeck, Anna; Hoffman, Ruben; Nilsson, Ulf; Sundberg, C.; Watson, Christine A.
Current organic agriculture performs well in several sustainability domains, like animal welfare, farm profitability and low pesticide use, but yields are commonly lower than in conventional farming. There is now a re-vitalized interest in increasing yields in organic agriculture to provide more organic food for a growing, more affluent population and reduce negative impacts per unit produced. However, past yield increases have been accompanied by several negative side-effects. Here, we review risks and opportunities related to a broad range of sustainability domains associated with increasing yields in organic agriculture in the Northern European context. We identify increased N input, weed, disease and pest control, improved livestock feeding, breeding...
