Genetisk variation af rødder og rodhår mellem sorter af vårhvede Organic Eprints
Wang, Yaosheng; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Jensen, Lars Stoumann; Magid, Jakob.

Localized application of sewage sludge improved plant nitrogen and phosphorus uptake by rhizobox-grown spring wheat Organic Eprints
Wang, Yaosheng; Stoumann Jensen, Lars; Magid, Jakob.
Sewage sludge (SS) can be used as an alternative fertilizer in agriculture. It is normally broad- casted and plowed into soil, but it is not clear if it has a potential as a placement fertilizer. A rhizo- box experiment was conducted to investigate the placement effect of SS and mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer on shoot and root growth as well as nutrient uptake of spring wheat (Triticum aesti- vum L.). The treatments included localized SS, mixed SS, localized SS and ammonium, local- ized ammonium, and a control without addition of SS and ammonium to examine the effect of SS placement and, further, if ammonium co-localization would enhance the placement effect. The re- sults show that SS fertilization improved soil N and P availability, which significantly...

Root growth vigour is a better predictor than root hair traits of early nutrient uptake in spring wheat plants grown at low soil fertility Organic Eprints
Wang, Yaosheng; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Jensen, Lars Stoumann; Magid, Jakob.
Background and Aims A number of root and root hair traits have been proposed as important for acquisition of P. However, it remains unknown whether these traits are most important in determining macro- and micronutrient uptake at low soil fertility. This study investigated the variations in root and root hair traits among spring wheat genotypes and examined which root and root hair traits are most important for high uptake of macro- and micronutrients. Methods Six spring wheat genotypes were grown in a soil with low nutrient availability. The root and root hair traits as well as the content of macro- and micronutrients were identified. Results A significant genetic variability in root and root hair traits was found. High root growth vigour and long and...

Genotypic differences in growth, yield and nutrient accumulation of spring wheat cultivars in response to long-term soil fertility regimes Organic Eprints
Wang, Yaosheng; Magid, Jakob; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Stoumann Jensen, Lars.
Determining genotypic responses to soil fertility may assist selection of cultivars that can be adapted to varied soil fertility regimes, and such selection under field conditions is still limited. A two-year field experiment was conducted in long-term field trials to investigate wheat genotype effects on early growth, yield and nutrient accumulation as affected by varied long-term soil fertility managements and nitrogen (N) fertilization. Results show that the early growth, grain yield and nutrient accumulation of spring wheat plants were strongly affected by soil fertility managements and genotypes. Early shoot and root biomass of singly grown plants and leaf canopy growth under standard growth density was associated with subsequent grain yield of plants...

Low-P solution culture may assist screening of root growth vigor in soil for high nutrient uptake of spring wheat varieties Organic Eprints
Wang, Yaosheng; Andersen, Sven Bode; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Jensen, Lars Stoumann; Magid, Jakob.
Root and root hairs of plants have been intensively studied in solution culture; however, correlation of such measurements in solution culture with development in soil is poorly understood. This study compared growth of roots and root hairs as well as uptake of macro- and micronutrients of six spring wheat varieties in solution culture under P stress and P abundance and in a low fertility soil. Results showed that root length and surface area under P stress was significantly positively correlated with that in the low fertility soil, while no such correlation was apparent for root hair length and density. In absolute terms the root length, surface area, root hair length and density of spring wheat varieties were substantially higher in soil than in solution...
