Irrigated paddy fields are the rice growing areas having high yield potential. Two significant factors enhancing high yield are the well-adapted variety and appropriate management. PSL05101-93-1-32 is a promising rice line derived from the 3-way cross of PSL00508-3-1-1-4/IR66738-118-1-2//IR67966-188-2-2-1 in 2005. It has as high yield potential as 965 kg/rai (6.03 t/ha). The average grain yield is 730 kg/rai, greater than PSL2, CNT1 and RD47 varieties by 14, 13 and 7%, respectively. The maturity is 115 days after sowing by transplanting method. Tagosodes pusanus (Distant) is one of the planthopper species, which has been reported as a minor insect pest in Thailand in 2000. The morphology of T. pusanus closely resembles the whitebacked planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horvath). However, it could be distinguished by the pattern of the dark markers of its forewings, pale yellow pronotum in the middle of the segment, color of the clypeus, and shapes and number of spines of aedeagus. The field experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of nine insecticides include buprofezin 25% WP, buprofezin 5% + isoprocarb 20% WP, etofenprox 20% EC, ethiprole 10% SC, dinotefuran 10% WP, pymetrozine 50% WG, sulfoxaflor 50% WG, carbosulfan 20% EC and clothianidin 16% SG to control BPH in farmers’ fields at Suphan Buri, Nakhon Nayok and Ubon Ratchathani provinces. Medium grain rice varietal improvement at Pathum Thani Rice Research Center has been conducted in 2010 starting by utilizing the populations of 121 F6 hybrid lines of PTTH07016 and 151 F4 lines of 33 crosses in irrigation lowland rice improvement project. The objective was to improve medium grain brown rice with 5.5-6.6 millimeters long and low to intermediate amylose content (15-25%). Four selected lines were laboratory test for making the products. There were two lines; PTT06036-25-5-B-4-1 and PTT06038-9-1-B-5-1 revealed good acceptability. However, these lines had variations in traits in which PTT06036-25-5-B-4-1 and PTT06038-9-1-B-5-1 consisted of 4 and 2 traits respectively. Insect survey using light traps and the field survey for collecting insect pests and natural enemies were conducted at Surin Rice Research Center during February 2014 to January 2015. The main objective of this study was to investigate the correlations between environmental factors and numbers of insect pests and natural enemies. The results revealed that rainfall, temperature and relative humidity were slightly correlated with numbers of insect pests and natural enemies. Additionally, number of pests was negatively correlated with number of natural enemies. Brown planthopper (BPH) is a major insect pest of irrigated rice cultivation areas in lower north, central and northeast Thailand. The field experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of nine insecticides to control BPH in farmers’ fields at Suphan Buri, Nakhonayok and Ubon Ratchathani provinces. The results showed that the sulfoxaflor 50 % WG and pymetrozine 50 % WG were the most effective insecticides. The ratios of BPH/mirid bug (MB) in the buprofezin and pymetrozine fields were lower than other fields, which may indicate the less toxicity to MB compared with other insecticides. Efficacy test of pericarps of soapberry (Sapindus emarginatus Wall) to control golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata Lamarck) was conducted in 2 x 5 meter rice field plots at Prachin Buri Rice Research Center in 2013. RCB design was used in this experiment. Five plots were treated with suspension of pericarps of soapberry at rates 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 kg/rai and compared with other two plots which one treated with suspension of tea seed cake (3 kg/rai; control 1) and another was untreated (control 2). In each plot contained 30 different sizes of snails. The results showed that in 48 hours after treated with soapberry and tea seed cake, the percentage mortality of golden apple snails were more than 50 and significantly different to untreated plot. The monitoring of population density is very important for forecasting the BPH outbreak. Light trap, an effective tool for monitoring the outbreaks of BPH was conducted in hot spot areas. Brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a major insect pest of rice in Thailand. Because of their ability to adapt to host plant and environment, the BPH becomes an extremely destructive pest and difficult to control. The purpose of this research is to monitor the insecticide resistance of BPH in North Eastern (NE) Thailand. The BPH populations were collected from the outbreak areas in 9 provinces during 2011 to 2012. The toxicity (LD50) of 10 insecticides was conducted using Topical bioassay method. Recently, the outbreak of brown planthopper in irrigated paddy fields in the lower northern region was found frequently due to continuous rice growing resulting in low yield of rice production. RD49 is a non–glutinous rice which is insensitive to photoperiod. This line was obtained from 3–way cross, PSL00508-3-1-1-4 /IR66738-118-1-2//IR68544-29-2-1-3-1-2. The average yield is 733 kg/rai which is 26, 15 and 6% greater than those of Chai Nat 1, Phitsanulok 2 and RD47, respectively whereas the maximum yield potential reaches 939 kg/rai. The plant type shows moderately strong culm with about 95 cm height, 102-107 days to maturity for seed broadcasting and 116 days for transplanting. Main Factors affecting brown planthopper (BPH) outbreaks in the Central region from past up to now are cultivations of susceptible rice varieties and misused insecticide application. The aim of this research was to prove the misused of insecticide application in the hot spot area causing BPH severe outbreak. In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption. A promising lines, PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1, was obtained from three-way cross between KLG88028-22-1-2-2 and F1 of SPR88096-17-3-2-2 and IR60 at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Medium grain rice improvement at Pathum Thani Rice Research Center have been conducted in 2010 starting by utilizing the populations of 121 F6 hybrid lines of PTTH07016 and 151 F4 lines of 33 crosses in irrigation lowland rice improvement project. The objective is to improve medium grain brown rice with 5.5-6.6 millimeters long and low to intermediate amylose content (15-25%). Four selected lines were laboratory test for making the products. There were two lines; PTT06036-25-5-B-4-1 and PTT06038-9-1-B-5-1 revealed that good acceptability. However, these lines had variations in traits which PTT06036-25-5-B-4-1 and PTT06038-9-1-B-5-1 consisted of 4 and 2 traits respectively. Monitoring of rice insect pest outbreaks is the activities under the Development of Warning System for Natural Disaster and Rice Pest Outbreak Project. The purpose of this study is to survey the insect pests and their natural enemies in farmers’ fields in Pak Panang river basin and Nakhon Si Thammarat Rice Research Center during 2009 to 2013. Population dynamic of golden apple snails related in rice planting phase at Chiang Rai provinces was conducted at irrigated rice field and rainfed rice field in Pan District from January 2012 – November 2014. The objective of this research is to determine the dynamics of golden apple snail population, which snails (applied removal sampling method) were randomly sampled consecutively by Quadrat sampling (1x1 m) at two-week interval. The results showed that the highest snails - density at irrigated rice field was in after harvesting phase but at rainfed rice field the highest density was in booting stage.
