The growing economic importance of potatoes in organic agriculture has led to the intensification of potato production and farm specialization. This has in turn increased the occurrence of the Colorado potato beetle, the most important potato insect pest worldwide. The effects of the application of green manure mulch to potatoes, which improves water and nutrient availability were investigated in a long-term field experiment, comparing two potato cultivation systems: conventional ploughing and hilling versus reduced tillage with dead mulch application. There were no differences in the initial degree of potato beetle infestation. However, a significant reduction in the number of potato beetle larvae and eggs was observed. The mechanism behind the effects... |

The cabbage whitefly, Aleyrodes proletella, has gradually developed into a key pest, affecting the quality of organic Brassica vegetables. Netting may provide partial control of the cabbage whitefly. In the ongoing project mechanical control methods using the barrier effect of netting and biological control methods with naturally occurring whitefly antagonists, namely the predatory ladybeetle Clitostethus arcuatus and the larval parasitoid Encarsia tricolor, are combined and their efficiency tested in small-scale field experiments. During the first year, adverse weather conditions affected the study. However, first results indicate, that even under relatively low host densities the parasitation by E. tricolor was enhanced after their release inside... |

The pea moth Cydia nigricana Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) has developed to an important pest in pea growing areas (green and grain peas) causing high economic damage. Currently no effective pest control options are available under organic farming conditions. The presented project aims to generate a first draft of pea moth control in organic farming including a risk assessment of pea moth damage incidence and a direct control approach. Data collection for risk evaluation were arranged for three years (2006 – 2008) in two exemplary pea growing areas in Germany (North Hessen and Central Sachsen). In a small plot experiment in Northern Hessen the combined effect of a pyrethroid product (Spruzit-Neu®, W. Neudorff GmbH KG, Emmerthal, Germany) and... |

Previous studies have shown that most of the specialized rape pests prefer turnip rape over oilseed rape. In our studies two trap crop strategies were tested under field conditions in central Germany. In the first trial a turnip rape (Brassica rapa var. silvestris) strip was sown along the edges of the oilseed rape (Brassica napus) main crop. In the second trial a seed mixture of 95% oilseed rape and 5% turnip rape was sown and was compared to oilseed rape in pure crop. In both experiments the turnip rape trap crop was more attractive to cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) and pollen beetle (Meligethes aeneus) than the oilseed rape. Neither the border strip nor the intercropping was able to reduce the level of infestation of the oilseed... |

In this study results of 3 experimental years, 4 locations (2009-2011) and additionally 12 fields in northern and eastern Germany (only in 2011) are presented with regard to the nitrogen and sulphur status of oil seed rape. The nitrogen and sulphur level was often not sufficient, so that the fertilisation regimes have to be optimised. |
