Eine Erhebung zur Parasitenkontrolle auf biologisch wirtschaftenden Schaf- und Ziegenbetrieben in der Schweiz Organic Eprints

To determine the current control measures for strointestinal nematodes (GIN) on Swiss organic small ruminant farms, a phone questionnaire was developed and conducted. The survey also aimed to assess the understanding and implementation of possible alternative GIN control options. In total, 52 meat sheep and 58 dairy goat farm questionnaires were completed, and it was found that in general, farmers were aware of the potential benefit of an adequate grazing management to reduce GIN infection. However, practical realisation was often limiting. On average it was stated that adult meat sheep and dairy goats were drenched 1.5 and 1.3 times per animal and year, respectively, whilst lambs and kids were treated 1.6 and 1.3 times per animal and year, respectively....

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are one of the most important problems affecting health and therefore performance and welfare in small ruminant husbandry. The control of these parasites in the past strongly relied on the repeated use of anthelmintic drugs. This has led to nematode populations which are resistant to most of the currently available anthelmintics. Furthermore customer’s demands for organic and residue free animal products are increasing. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of two different short-term progestagen treatments for estrus synchronization in cyclic ewes. A total of 292 ewes of 3 flocks (A–C) on different farms were treated for 6 days with Eazi-breedTM CIDR® G (n = 145) or Chronogest® CR (n = 147) vaginal inserts in combination with 0.125 mg Cloprostenol and 300IU eCG at device removal. Blood samples were taken for progesterone (P4) determination at insert application and removal as well as 14 days later. One day after insert removal rams fitted with marking harnesses were joined to ewes for 35 days and marked ewes recorded daily. Integrated control of gastrointestinal nematodes in lambs using a bioactive feed x breed approach Organic Eprints

Forages rich in condensed tannins have repeatedly shown potential to reduce gastrointestinal nematode infection in sheep. Similarly, several breeds of sheep have shown a relative resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). We hypothesised that additive or even synergic effects may arise from the combination of a relatively resistant breed and a diet rich in condensed tannins. In study I, 160 lambs of the native Red Engadine Sheep (RES) and 113 lambs of the Swiss White Alpine sheep (SWA) were artificially infected with GIN and subsequently grazed for 52 days. The legumes soinfoin containing condensed tannins is often associated with beneficial effects when used in animal husbandry. We tested two potentially beneficial effects by feeding 700g sainfoin or 700g alfalfa peelts to 10 dairy goats each.

tPrevious research has demonstrated the potential of tanniniferous feed sources to reducethe faecal egg count (FEC) of sheep and lambs infected with gastrointestinal nematodes(GIN). The present study investigates the use of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia, cv. Perly)and faba bean seeds (Vicia faba, cv. Scirocco), either as single condensed tannin sources orin combination, to reduce the periparturient rise in the faecal egg count of GIN-infectedewes.
