Building Food Communities: Farm Management Schemes within Organic PGS; Survey and Analysis in Soc Son, Hanoi, Vietnam Organic Eprints
Whitney, Cory W.; Từ Tuyết, Nhung.
Demand is rising for organic vegetables in Vietnam. This poses many challenges for small-scale rural farmers who supply the Hanoi markets. Strict third party certification is well beyond their reach, both in terms of cost and technical ability. Organic participatory guarantee systems (PGS) offer an alternative through peer-review and social control, supporting appropriate farming practices, local market development, and social cohesion (Zanasi and Venturi 2008). PGS is based on civil society (Fonseca et. al, 2008), and ensures agro-biodiversity conservation and livelihood security by recognizing the merits of traditional practices and customs (Darlong 2008). PGSs are context specific and the systems vary greatly, but all propose collective efforts for...

Changes in Organic Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) in Northern Vietnam Organic Eprints
Tu Tuyet, Nhung; Whitney, Cory W..
Organic Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) may be on important contribution to Organic 3.0. The way that PGS systems are managed can be a major determinant of their success. In Northern Vietnam differing management of PGS systems can determine their level of social and ecological success, as well as the impressions of farmers and retailers. Nevertheless, more farmers’ groups are turning to individual management and this may have negative consequences for the future of PGS in the region.

Homegardens in Uganda. Diversity and Potential Organic Eprints
Whitney, Cory W.; Gebauer, Jens.
Ugandan homegarden systems are sustainable small-scale solutions for food security and conservation containing a great diversity of native plant species and preserving the associated time-tested traditional knowledge for nutrition and conservation. Furthermore, the people of Uganda have a diversity of uses for these native species. However, these systems and traditions are under threat for a variety of reasons. Organic may hold some of the keys for the revitalization of these oases of diversity and culture. The organic markets in Uganda now sell only a few species but can embrace the great diversity through increasing access to organic markets for more small producers and indigenous plant species.

Measurable Impacts of the “Principles of Organic Agriculture”; Survey of a Vietnamese Organic PGS Organic Eprints
Whitney, Cory W.; den Braber, Koen; Từ Tuyết, Nhung; Thorndal Jørgensen, Søren.
In a farmers' survey within Organic Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) in Soc Son Hanoi, Vietnam farmers indicated that they feel there is room for improvement, but that they are largely satisfied with the management schemes and farming systems. They gave a high score for questions related to the principles; health 74%, ecology 79%, fairness 68%, and care 71%. These results are outlined and the case is made that the organic principles are measurable and comparable. It is further argued that with a quantifiable measurement of the functioning of organic systems from the farmer we may find more ways to promote and help shape the future of the movement according to the principles.

More inter- and transdisciplinary research needed in agroecology Organic Eprints
Biber-Freudenberger, Lisa; Denich, Manfred; Whitney, Cory W..
Agroecology embraces a collection of different disciplinary fields, ranging from agriculture and ecology to political theory. A stronger recognition of agroecology in agricultural research, which often has a strong production focus, could help to achieve sustainable development if more holistic and transdisciplinary research approaches are adopted.

Farm Management Schemes within Organic PGS Survey and Analysis in Sóc Sơn, Hanoi, Vietnam Organic Eprints
Whitney, Cory W.; den Braber, Koen; Từ Thị Tuyết, Nhung; Jørgensen, Søren Thorndal.
A comparative analysis of collective and individual management schemes within Organic Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) in the Hanoi province in northern Vietnam indicates that collective farm management enhances social and ecological practices. The study has juxtaposed the schemes in terms of social and ecological systems as well as impressions of farmers and retailers.

Entrepreneurial Culture And Capability of Organic Farmers’ Organizations in the Philippines Organic Eprints
Buena, Maria Rowena; Whitney, Cory W..
The entrepreneurial culture of farmers’ organizations of Magsasaka at Siyentipiko Para sa Pag- unlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG) in the Philippines is a contribution to Organic 3.0. The mechanisms necessary to reinforce an entrepreneurial culture for the Organic farmers’ organizations of MASIPAG are described. Different PGS groups have similar entrepreneurial capabilities yet dissimilar competitive success and organizational cultural dimensions. Much work is needed to develop the entrepreneurial capabilities, we recommend that farmers actively participate in marketing activities within their localities, improve production, and take advantage of expanding markets; farmers’ organizations leaders should encourage members to increase production and entice...

Agroforestry Options in Northwest Vietnam Organic Eprints
Hoa, Thi Do; Whitney, Cory W.; Luedeling, Eike.
The mountainous northwest of Vietnam is home for the majority of the country’s ethnic minorities. Poverty and food insecurity are common in the region, increasing population and land scarcity have induced the expansion of agricultural areas and consequent decline of land productivity due to soil erosion and land degradation. Local farmers have begun to practice agroforestry through the introduction of high value trees into traditional cropping systems with various combinations of timber, fruit, nut forage trees and annual crops. However, because of inherent production risks and many remaining uncertainties, assessing the long-term performance of agroforestry has remained challenging. We simulated prospective system benefits of agroforestry options by...

Effects of Biodynamic Preparation 500 (P500) Cow Horn Manure on Early Growth of Barley, Pea, Quinoa, and Tomato under Saline Stress Conditions Organic Eprints
Han, EuSun; Whitney, Cory W.; Niether, Wiebke; Nelson, William.
Large areas of salt-affected soils are found in tropics, especially in Africa, South America and the Middle East. While soil salinity might lead to food insecurity in those regions and affect farmers who are most vulnerable to environmental stress, however, little is known how the abiotic stress can be managed with locally available resources without involving high cost. Decades of practical evidence have demonstrated the benefits of the farm input, called biodynamic preparation 500 (P500) cow horn manure, such as improving crop performance and providing resilience against various stress conditions. Organic agriculture is already seen as an important issue in sustainable crop production in the tropics, but also biodynamic philosophy and agricultural...
