The genus Gynostemma is represented in Thailand and Malesia by four species of which the extremely variable G. pentaphyllum is widespread covering the whole area. Seven forms are recognized in G. pentaphyllum, of which three are new: forma fasciculare W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, forma grandiflorum W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, forma knemandrum W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, and three are new combinations: forma dasycarpum (C.Y. Wu) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, forma pubescens (Gagnep.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, and forma simplicifolium (Blume) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes. Two new species, both endemic to New Guinea, are described: G. intermedium W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes and G. papuanum W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes. |

New material of Knema, mainly from Borneo, necessitated the description of 5 new species, 1 new subspecies, and 2 varieties, viz. Knema latericia subsp. latericia var. subtilis, K. stylosa (stat. nov.), K. viridis, K. glauca var. riparia, K. stenophylla subsp. longipedicellata (comb. et stat. nov.), K. subhirtella, K. mogeana, and K. riangensis. Altogether 14 species are commented upon. The new taxa have been inserted in the general key and regional keys to the species as presented in Blumea 25 (1979) and 27 (1981). At present 90 species in total are recognized in Knema. An index to names of taxa supplementary to that given in 1979 has been added. |

This book seems to belong to – and certainly should be used side by side with – the late Marius Jacobs’ “The tropical rain forest – a first encounter” (Dutch version 1981; English edition 1988, 295 pp.), as it has much the same design and contents, and is similarly richly illustrated; it also aims at a better understanding of the necessity in saving the forest for the future. The present volume somewhat more focuses on ecology proper, tries to explain it, and tells what is happening today with the forests, to a broad reading public which surely includes politicians and all kinds of tropical scientists. There is a glossary, and for readers further interested a list of references, and a general index. The nicely executed book contains, as compared to... |

Mostly climbing herbs or lianas with axillary tendrils, rarely erect herbs, shrubs or small trees, glabrous or hairy, in Mal. not spiny. Branching usually by a supraaxillary serial bud. Leaves (mostly) spirally arranged, simple or compound, pinninerved or palminerved, entire or lobed; petiole or blade-base often with 1-many glands, and often glands on margin and lower surface of the blade. Stipules present. Inflorescences essentially axillary, cymose, sessile or peduncled, 1-many-flowered, ending in (a) tendril (s) or not. Bracts and bracteoles mostly small. Flowers often stiped, articulate to the pedicel, actinomorphic, bisexual or functionally unisexual (either with staminodes or a vestigial ovary, and then plants mostly dioecious) or polygamous.... |

The naturally large annual fluctuation in the number of flowering individuals of Anacamptis pyramidalis in the water catchment- and conservation area the „Noordhollands Duinreservaat” tends to obscure the alternative possibility that this species, which was formerly locally very abundant, is at present severely threatened by drought, and now is almost extinct. The author argues that this, as well as the depauperation of the whole dune flora, is caused directly and indirectly by the excessive withdrawal of the groundwater. |

In this paper an account is given of all names in the genus Myristica Gronov. for New Guinea, including 71 new species, subspecies or varieties and 4 new names either by new combination or new rank. Sinclair (1968) accepted 40 species names with 7 varieties, Foreman (1974, 1978) admitted 45 names (38 species and 8 varieties). In the present census I have 95 species and 31 taxa of infraspecific rank, reflecting a more refined species definition as well as the intensified field collecting of the last decades. A key is given, based on male and female flowering and fruiting specimens. |

A concise history of the botanical collecting and abbreviated reports of the exploration tours by C.G.G.J. van Steenis and De Wilde & Duyfjes in the Gunung Leuser Park and vicinity, northern Sumatra (mainly Aceh Province) is given. This shows that essential areas of the Park, e.g. at the West side, are still botanically unknown. The remarkable achievements in field work by Van Steenis are recorded. The detailed descriptions of the itineraries give a good impression of the constitution and botanical conditions of the terrains of the interior and will be useful for the logistics of future exploration efforts in this difficult and unsurveyable area. The amount of botanical collecting done in the various vegetation types traversed is indicated. The... |

‘Blang’ is the Gayo name for the extensive, open, grassy, lowland savanna land of their area in Aceh, N Sumatra. By analogy, the open areas with heath-like vegetation high in the mountains are called ‘mountain blang’. There are two somewhat intergrading types: a wet and a dry one. They are believed to have been caused by regularly burning since immemorial times by hunters, but our explanation is that they have (at least largely) developed for edaphic reasons, i.e. are due to prevailing climatic conditions on very poor, leached-out and almost impermeable kaolinitic soils. Their extension was possibly enlarged by occasional frost and burning, which may account for the sometimes, but not at all always, sharp demarcation with the surrounding stunted forest.... |

The Hamameli(i)dae comprise, according to the new classification by Thorne, about one quarter of the genera to one third of the families of the Dicotyledonae. The symposium held at the University of Reading, U.K, 22-25 March 1988, highlighted some of the many questions concerning phylogeny and evolution in this group as a contribution to the insight in the main lines of dicotyledonous evolution. The symposium report contains a wealth of information on a wide variety of topics. The phylogenetic position of the Hamamelidae in a wider or narrower sense, or parts thereof, is subject of a number of papers. F. EHRENDORFER reviews the existing diverging interpretations and concludes that the Hamamelidae can be regarded as ancient and partly relictual survivors... |

During a precursory study in the genus Saraca it became evident that the number of fertile stamens and the size and degree of persistency of the bracteoles are major characters in the delimitation of the species. The genus extends from India and Ceylon to S.W. China and Tonkin, and as far east as to Celebes. The Celebes material (4 collections) was found to represent a species new to science. In the group with 6—8(—10) stamens, and with small (2—8 mm long) bracteoles, of which the Indian material was hitherto mostly referred to Saraca indica L., it appeared that two species are concerned, viz.: I. Bracteoles erect, clasping the pedicel, persistent. India, Ceylon, E. Pakistan, Burma west of the Irrawaddy River; otherwise cultivated. Fig. 1A Saraca asoca... |

The older generic name Basananthe is accepted over Tryphostemma. In this Central-, East- and South African genus 25 species are recognized. Subdivision into sections is abandoned. Key to the species, descriptions, illustration of leaves, citation of examined specimens, distribution maps, index accounting for all names pertaining to the genus. The monotypic genus Carania is sunk into Basananthe. Many reductions, new combinations, 6 new species. |
