In plots B1, 2, and 4 in 1978 only a single species once covered over 12.5% of the surface: Leontodon hispidus. A few species covered sometimes about 5-10%, like Briza media, Triselum flavescens, Lotus corniculatus, Leontodon hispidus, and Knautia arvensis. In the course of the study the occasional dominance of certain species disappeared (Table 2). Most species covered less than 5%, but the number of individuals often fluctuated strongly from one species to another. In plots B3 and B5 a much stronger dominance could be observed than in the non-fertilized plots (Fig. 5). In 1978 the grasses Festuca rubra and Dactylis glomerata covered from 10—40% of the surface, the coverage of other species, particularly forbs, amounting to less than 1%, e.g., Ononis... |

In 1971 a number of permanent plots were established in an abandoned Dutch calcareous grassland, then belonging to the association Arrhenatheretum elatioris with some elements of Mesobrometum erecti and Poo-Lolietum. A part of the plots was treated with fertilizer of varying N.P.K.-content. Another part was treated with farm yard manure, calcium carbonate, or left untreated. All plots were mown once a year. Each year, species composition, including bryophytes, as well as peak standing crop were determined. After seven years the plots treated with fertilizer are sharply distinct from the others ones, both in species composition and above-ground biomass. In the fertilized plots the number of species decreased considerably due to dominance of a few species,... |

In June, 1969, the author studied a number of limestone grassland-vegetations in the French Jura Mountains, South of Champagnôle, on the methods of the French-Swiss School of phytosociology. These vegetations can be assigned to the alliance Mesobromion Br.-Bl. & Moor 1938, and belong to the: A. Pinguicula Vulgaris – Bromus ERECTUS-VEGETATION. B. Eu-Mesobromion Oberd. 1957. Mesobrometum collinum (Scherr. 1925) Oberd. 1957. 1. subass. typicum 2. hypericetosum subass. nov. a. Achillea millefolium-variant b. Teucrium chamaedrys-variant Special attention was paid to the cryptogams ocouring in these associations. More than 40 taxa of bryophytes and lichens were met with. There proved to be a distinct correlation between the phanerogamic communities and the... |

The authors report the discovery of Scheuchzeria palustris L. in the eastern part of the Belgian Kempen in the summer of 1974. This find is of importance a.o. from the viewpoint of plantgeography, since Scheuchzeria had not been found in Belgium after 1946, and therefore was considered extinct there. The species had never been reported earlier from the region where it was found in 1974 (fig. 1). In August 1974 14 plants in fruit were counted in a bog situated on a plateau consisting of fluvial sand and gravel deposits of pleistocene origin, about 90 m above sea level, in the municipality of Maasmechelen. The plants grew in a depression between a Sphagnum island and the gradually rising margin of the fen, together with Sphagnum cuspidatum, Juncus bulbosus,... |

The author reports the discovery of the moss Rhodobryum roseum (Hedw.) Limpr. in the municipality of Wijlre in the extreme south of the Dutch province of Limburg. This is the first certain find from this area. See distribution map – fig. 2. Rhodobryum occurs on a steep part with a grade of about 30° of a north-facing hillside which borders the valley of the rivulet Geul. This steep part originated by specific land use for several centuries and it forms a part of a pasture which lies below it and is incidentally grazed by cattle. Above the locality a forest stretches towards the hill top. The habitat of Rhodobryum roseum receives no direct sunshine and the microclimatological situation can be defined as open shade. The air humidity is constantly rather... |

In the early part of this century, Parnassia pa lust r is was found in at least 59 localities in the southern part of the Dutch province of Limburg. Although, descriptions of these habitats are scarce, three main types could be distinguished: spring bogs, upper part of slopes in the transitional zone between chalk and gravel deposits, and wet haylands along brooks. Phytosociological data are discussed in detail. Between the two World Wars, the number of sites decreased enormously due to changed agricultural activities, especially the use of artificial fertilizers and drainage of wetlands. Today, only two localities remain. One, in a spring bog, is threatened by road planning. At the other locality, the upper part of a slope covered with species rich... |

This paper describes the floristic composition, structure and habitat of the Brachypodio-Sieglingietum, a plant community belonging to the alliance Violion caninae, class Nardo-Callunetea. This plant community occurs on gravel deposits overlying chalk. The average pH of the upper soil layer, o – 10 cm, is 4,5. This plant community consists both of plants which are mostly met with in chalk grassland as well as plants from heathlands. The community is found on the slopes of the valleys of the river Maas and its tributaries in the neighbourhood of Maastricht. Formerly the Brachypodio-Sieglingietum was grazed by sheep. It has decreased considerably during the last decades and only a few communities remain. The description given in this paper concerns the only... |

In this publication the authors describe the grassland communities rich in species especially those which occur on basic soils. The investigation was done in the Belgian part as well as in the Dutch part of St. Pietersberg situated south of the Dutch town of Maastricht. See map – fig. 1. St. Pietersberg is a long and narrow remnant of a plateau which becomes larger going towards the south. On the east side St. Pietersberg is bordered by the river Maas and on the west side by the rivulet Jeker. The altitude of the area investigated varies from about 100 m above sea level in the north till about 150 m above sea level in the south. The vegetation relevees were made on the basis of the principles of the French-Swiss school of phytosociology (Braun-Blanquet,... |

Flowering plants of some populations of Orchis mascula (L.) L. occurring in the most southern part of the Dutch province of Limburg were studied during the period 1960—70. From each flowering plant the following data were recorded: total height of the plant and length of inflorescence. The sites are situated in formerly coppice woodland on differently facing slopes at a varying altitude above sea level. The woodland belongs to the Stellario — Carpinetum subass. orchidetosum. The number of flowering plants fluctuated from year to year on each locality. Also the height of the total plant and the length of the inflorescence are very variable. A correlation between increasing number of flowering plants and increasing total height of plants could not be... |

The authors report a find of Orchis simia Lamk. (Monkey-Orchid) on a hillside covered by limestone-grassland at Cadier-en-Keer in the extreme south of the Dutch province of Limburg, a few km east of Maastricht (fig. 4). The station is a south-facing hillside with calcareous deposits of Upper Senone age at varying depth in the subsoil. Up to the second world-war the area was extensively grazed by sheep; the vegetation was then open limestone-grassland. The area occupied by this vegetation is rapidly decreasing by intentional and spontaneous reafforestation. In 1972 Orchis simia was found in one of the open places left. In 1973 the same plant flowered again, producing even more flowers on a more robust stem than in the preceding year. The station in southern... |
