Europe is both a leading world market for and world producer of organic food. Growth of organically managed land and of domestic market values was strong in the past and continued during the financial recession, although at a slower rate. Many countries have specific plans for priority organic research and investment. Europe is a major producer of organic fruit crops, including a total of more than 900,000 ha consisting of 367,000 ha of olives, 92,700 ha of grapes, 187,000 ha of nuts, 94,800 ha of temperate fruit, 26,096 ha of berries, 31,800 ha of citrus, and 11,000 ha of subtropical fruit (2010). Western Europe added 4,000 ha of organic apples (Malus ×domestica) in 2010 and 2011 due to growth of the organic fruit market, a decline in conventional fruit... |

Organic Eprints is an Open Access archive for research in organic food and farming. While based in Europe, it is international and open for deposits from all over the world. Since the start in 2002, the archive has steadily grown to over 10,000 deposits in 2010. Open Access enables more users to download and read the deposited papers, and this may lead to increased citations. Development of a platform based on Organic Eprints among other agriculture-related archives should make search even stronger. All researchers who work with organic food and farming are encouraged to register and deposit their work in Organic Eprints. |

One of the main aims of the case studies was to publish improved market reports. The data collected as part of the six case studies have been, or will shortly be, published in the five improved national organic market reports and one first regional market report (MOAN case study). This will make a contribution towards filling the many gaps that continue to exist in organic market data collection in Europe. |

Growth of the organic food market slowed in 2009 in response to global economic stresses. Markets in Europe were more affected than in the USA, but sales still expanded in these two dominant markets. Organic fruit and vegetable sales in the USA maintained about 11% growth from 2008 to 2011. Overall, the global area of organic fruit (converted and in conversion) was over 648,000 ha in 2010, accounting for 7% of organically-managed arable and permanent crop land. Leading fruits were grapes and tropical and subtropical fruits, accounting for 34 and 29% of all organic fruit area in 2010. An estimated 56% of the total world organic fruit production area was in Europe, with grapes the leading crop. Over 6% of the grape hectarage in Italy was certified organic or... |

Annually, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL collects data on key indicators of organic agriculture in European Union such as area, production and trade data among national data sources (for trade data) and Eurostat (for area, production and operator data; Eurostat 2018). Data are compiled in a MySQL database, and quality checks are carried out following the ORMACODE of the EUfunded OrganicDataNetwork (OrganicDataNetwork et al 2014), much of which is based on Eurostat’s Statistics Code of Practice (Eurostat 2011). Checks include the comparison against the previous year, the neighbouring countries, and the overall total. In case of inconsistencies, data providers are asked for clarification. FiBL publishes the data annually in collaboration... |
