Reduzierte Bodenbearbeitung weiterentwickeln Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Fliessbach, Andreas; Willer, Helga; Krauss, Maike.

Implementation Action Plan for organic food and farming research Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Niggli, Urs; Pearce, Bruce; Schlüter, Marco; Schmid, Otto; Cuoco, Eduardo; Willer, Helga; Huber, Machteld; Halberg, Niels; Micheloni, Cristina.
The Implementation Action Plan completes TP Organics’ trilogy of key documents of the Research Vision to 2025 (Niggli et al 2008) and the Strategic Research Agenda (Schmid et al 2009). The Implementation Action Plan addresses important areas for a successful implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda. It explores the strength of Europe’s organic sector on the world stage with about one quarter of the world’s organic agricultural land in 2008 and accounting for more than half of the global organic market. The aims and objectives of organic farming reflect a broad range of societal demands on the multiple roles of agriculture and food production of not only producing commodities but also ecosystem services. These are important for Europe’s economic...

Organic Viticulture in Europe: Development and current statistics Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga.
Abstract The first activities in organic viticulture date back to the 1950s when in Switzerland and Germany the first pioneers made great efforts to apply the basic principles of organic agriculture to viticulture. Since then, organic viticulture has developed dynamically in many countries. The international organic viticulture congresses evolved in Germany. The first congress of was held in 1985 in Geisenheim, organised by the German organic wine growers' association ECOVIN. The 6th congress was held in Basel, Switzerland, 2000 and for the first time in conjunction with an IFOAM Conference (IFOAM 2000). The ‘Organic wine and viticulture conference’ in the frame of the 16th IFOAM Organic World Congress in Modena, Italy, in June 2008 constitutes the 9th...

Organic in Europe: Prospects and Developments Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Meredith, Stephen; Moeskops, Bram; Busacca, Emanuele.
In 2016/2017 the European organic food and farming sector continued to excel both in terms of organic production and market growth as well as the latest developments in European Union (EU) food and farming policy. Data for 2016 shows the European organic food market recording significant growth – increasing by 11.4 percent (EU: 12.0 percent). At the same time, the organic sector faces a number of challenges, notably that the growth rates in organic production continue to lag behind the dynamic growth seen within the organic food market. In the public policy arena at the EU level, there are some opportunities for the organic sector to capitalise on the growing awareness and interest in tackling sustainability concerns in the agri-food sector amongst...

The Organic Market in Europe. Overview and Market Access Information for Producers and International Trading Companies. Fourteen Country Examples in the European Free Trade Association and the European Union, with a Special Focus on Switzerland Organic Eprints
Kilcher, Lukas; Willer, Helga; Huber, Beate; Frieden, Claudia; Schmutz, Res; Schmid, Otto.
From the Foreword by Luks Kilcher, FiBL More than thirty-seven million hectares of agricultural land are managed organically by nearly 1.8 million producers. About one-third of the world’s organic land – 13.4 million hectares – is located in emerging markets and markets in transition. Global sales reached 55 billion USD in 2009, more than doubling in value from 25 billion USD in 2003. Europe is after the USA the second largest organic market in the world with a turnover of 26 billion USD in 2009. These figures increase year by year and such facts impressively illustrate the powerful development of the organic production and market all over the world. Behind these figures lie a large number of benefits and impacts, which are the motor for this...

Classification of land use data Organic Eprints
Baraibar, Barbara; Willer, Helga.
For the data collected under the 2007 global survey, the classification system developed for the 2006 survey was used, but slightly modified. When the 2006 survey began, FiBL did not yet have a classification system, as it was not known what kind of data would be available, if any (Baraibar 2006). As the data were collected, a classification system was developed according to the kind of data received. FiBL and SOEL are planning to improve the classification system and to ultimately bring it in line with classification systems that are currently being developed for organic farming.

D4.4 Final revised database Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Schaack, Diana.
In the framework of the OrganicDataNetwork project and internal project database was established in order to store the data collected in the two survey rounds of the OrganicDataNetwork project (Willer and Schaack 2013 and 2014). The database builds on the one that the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and the Agricultural Market Information Company (AMI) use for their organic data collection activities. However, this database was considerably expanded during the OrganicDataNetwork project. This document explains the features of the internal OrganicDataNetwork database and how the data can be acceded.

Organic Viticulture in Europe and the European Union Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga.
In this article, some key data on organic grape prodcution are presented. Organic vines were grown in Europe on more than 230,000 hectares at the end of 2011 (217,000 hectares within the European Union) according to a survey by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL). The largest areas are in Spain, France and Italy. One third of Europe’s organic grape area is in Spain. Most of the organic grapes are grown for wine, even though in Turkey a large part of the production is used for raisins.

Fostering sustainability in production and trade of raw materials, horticulture and tropical products (RaMHOT): Assessing the impact of certification schemes on farm incomes, inclusive rural development and market access Organic Eprints
Kemper, Laura; Lernoud, Julia; Willer, Helga.
The study reflects on the role of sustainability certification in some of the most pressing issues in raw materials, horticulture and tropical (RaMHOT) value chains, namely farm income, market access, and rural development. It also highlights potential enabling factors and barriers, which facilitate or hinder positive impacts of certification, and provides recommendations for rendering certification schemes more effective in mainstreaming sustainability in the RaMHOT value chains. The report focuses on four crops: cocoa, cotton, sisal, and tea. Correspondingly, we focus on the following certification schemes: Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), Cotton made in Africa (CmiA), Fairtrade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance (RA) and UTZ.

Wachstum weltweit Wirklichkeit. Ökolandbau auch international auf dem Vormarsch Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Yussefi, Minou.
