Five European populations of the Cerastoderma glaucum/C. lamarcki complex were studied to elucidate differences between Mediterranean, Western European and Baltic populations: one from the French Mediterranean; two from the west coast of France; one from the Limfjord, Denmark; and one from the metal contaminated Gdansk Bay, Poland. The biochemical tissue composition related to five reproductive stages was analysed, and the results for the five populations were compared. The comparison showed that at similar maturity stages the biochemical composition of the cockle tissue was different for populations from each of the three regions, Northern Europe (region I), the French West coast (region II), and the Western Mediterranean (region III). These differences... |

This study presents results of histopathologic, cytogenetics and flow cytometry analyses performed on Macoma balthica collected from the Gulf of Gdansk (Baltic Sea) in 2003 in order to compare the techniques for diagnosis of neoplasia. The proportion of affected clams gave a crude prevalence of 15.7 %. The four stages of the disease defined by histology and three stages of neoplasia defined by flow cytometry were reported. Stage I defined by flow cytometry corresponded to stages I and II defined by histology. Chromosome analysis did not lead to a staging of neoplastic progression. Both cytogenetics and flow cytometry indicated a difference in the DNA content of non-neoplastic and neoplastic cells. Cytogenetics examination marked that the range of... |

Assessments of the quantity of organic matter in shells were made both by ignition at 475°C and by chemical extraction in O1M trichloroacetic acid. The quantity of organic matter obtained by ignition at 475°C was over-estimated by 2 to 48 times, depending on the species studied (Ruditapes philippinarum, Cardium edule, Cardium glaucum). A technique of extraction by OlM trichloroacetic acid, filtration on Whatman CFjC filter and weighing of remaining ashes after ignition (450°C) is proposed, Energy values of the shell organic matter varied from 1700(±060) Jmg 1 to 240 (±2'87) Jmg 1 depending on the species and the geographic location. In the energy budget, these methods have made it possible to obtain an estimate of the energy mobilised in the... |

Physiological and behavioral responses to Cu exposure were measured in the Baltic clam Macoma balthica from the Gulf of Gdansk, southern Baltic Sea. The burrowing activity, mortality rate, glycogen content, condition index and free amino acid (FAA) composition were analysed as indicators of stress in a series of field and laboratory studies. M. balthica exposed to Cu showed clear Cu-concentration related differences in burrowing activity and mortality rate, but no consistent differences in the condition index, glycogen content, and free amino acids. The clams from a less polluted area reacted more strongly and were more sensitive to additional stress as compared to organisms from a more polluted region. The effect of Cu on the ecophysiology of Baltic clams... |
