The Strobel Plateau is a conspicuous and representative basaltic plateau ("meseta") in the Patagonian steppe, Argentina. This plateau is dotted with more than 1500 shallow lakes, which are regularly used by waterbirds and support one of the main breeding populations of the near threatened Hooded Grebe (Podiceps gallardoi). We collected data on bird presence and abundance in 41 shallow lakes, covering a wide spectrum of the wetland environmental variability found in the area. We conducted six surveys from spring to fall between 2004 and 2006. We recorded a total of 18 waterbird species, which represent 5 different families. Anatidae was the family most represented with 12 species, accounting for 85% of the observed waterbirds. Waterbird distribution among... |

This paper describes nocturnal, marine feeding behaviour in the Brown-hooded Gull (Larus maculipennis) in November 2009. The gulls assembled at night at the end of a long pier, running 800 m offshore into the Golfo Nuevo, at Puerto Madryn, Chubut Province, Argentina. Powerful lights predictably lighted the water around the end of the pier and attracted many small prey animals to the surface. Several hundreds of gulls, presumed to be local breeders, came every night to feed on this bounty, using various feeding techniques and taking several prey species and sizes. Potential prey items were caught to be identified by vertical plankton hauls. The gulls most likely took relatively large Isopoda (Idothea sp.), Polychaeta (Platynereis sp.) and fish larvae... |

The Argentine coastal zone, with its highly productive coastal waters, allows the existence of important seabird and marine mammal breeding assemblages, fish and crustacean spawning and nursery areas, and extensive macroalgae and mollusk beds. Knowledge of factors determining the dynamics of coastal waters is urgently needed to help understand their influence on biological processes and marine biodiversity. Available information in the region is currently scarce due to the low number of oceanographic cruises and oceanographic modeling studies. We evaluate the capacity of high-resolution satellite information for the identification and analysis of coastal processes such as fronts, upwellings, and small scale eddies. Using two case studies, we show how the... |
