Export of excess litter from concentrated animal production regions has become a pressing issue. A break even price for poultry litter in nutrient-deficient areas was identified through a math programming model using willingness to pay data from crop producers. Results indicate that a $16 subsidy is needed to sustain a long-term poultry litter market.

How Far Can Poultry Litter Go? A New Technology for Litter Transport AgEcon

Exporting northwest Arkansas excess turkey and broiler litter to partially fertilize nutrient-deficient cropland in eastern Arkansas can be more cost effective than to supply all crop nutrients with chemical fertilizer only, given current high fertilizer prices. Cost savings are greater if litter is baled in ultraviolet resistant plastic and transported via truck, since backhaul opportunities reduce truck rates, or alternatively, if raw litter is shipped via a truck-barge combination. Rice is the crop that allows for greater savings according to a mathematical programming model implemented in General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS).

SPATIAL PRICING EFFICIENCY: THE CASE OF U.S. LONG GRAIN RICE AgEcon

The spatial rice price relationships for U.S. long grain rough rice are affected by many factors besides the transportation cost between markets, such as milling, processing, cooking and nutritional value as well as physical characteristics. This study applies a time series framework to analyze long run price relationships for Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and California long grain rice. Johansen's test results showed that at least there are two cointegrating price vectors. However, such a finding is not supported by the ECM model in any of the price series.

PROJECTED USE OF GROUNDWATER FOR IRRIGATION IN THE TEXAS HIGH PLAINS AgEcon

Projections of groundwater irrigation under alternative price conditions are computed for representative resource situations in the Texas High Plains. The rate of groundwater depletion and pumping costs are related to the level of irrigation pumpage over the period 1976-2026. The projected economic life of irrigation in this region is responsive to changing economic conditions; in particular, the rate of increase in energy prices for pumping.

Economics of Transporting Poultry Litter from Northwest Arkansas to Eastern Arkansas Croplands AgEcon

Applying baled litter from northwest Arkansas shipped by truck with backhauls, supplemented with chemical fertilizers provided the most cost-efficient method to supply nutrients to crops in eastern Arkansas, according to a GAMS optimization. Shipping raw litter by truck and barge is the optimal choice when backhauls or baling is unavailable.

Use of On-Farm Reservoirs in Rice Production: Results from the MARORA Model AgEcon

The present article uses the modified Arkansas off-stream reservoir analysis and the environmental policy-integrated climate models to examine the impacts of on-farm reservoirs and tail water recovery systems in conjunction with other best management practices on profitability, water use, and sediment control for rice-soybean farming operations. Results suggest that, under limited water availability conditions, reservoirs and tail water recovery systems can improve profitability, reduce ground water dependence, and reduce the movement of sediment, nutrients, and pesticides off-farm. Although reservoirs may not be profitable under plentiful water conditions, cost-sharing opportunities may make them a viable means of addressing environmental concerns.
