Contractual Arrangements of Traders in Chinese Wholesale Markets AgEcon
Yu, Xiaohua; Abler, David G.; Zeng, Yinchu.
Using a survey data of 700 traders, this study scrutinizes contract choices and enforcement for agricultural traders in China. This study finds that market service and environment are very important for both contract choices and enforcement. Better market service and environment can increase the propensity of using contract and the probability of contract enforcement both for purchase and sales of products. Education and memberships of special associations are also important for contract choices and enforcement. Higher education and affiliation to special associations for traders can increase the propensity of contracts and reduce contract breaches. However, the formats of contracts, whether contracts are oral or written, are not important for contract...

Estimating the impact of transport efficiency on trade costs: Evidence from Chinese agricultural traders AgEcon
Li, Zhigang; Yu, Xiaohua; Zeng, Yinchu.
Using a unique survey data on agricultural traders in China in 2004, this study provides direct evidence on significance of interregional transport costs and their key determinants. Our major findings are as follows: (1) the trade barriers within China are dominated by transport-related costs but not artificial barriers, approximated by tolls and fines; (2) Labor and fuels costs are the most significant component of transport costs; (3) road quality is very important for transportation efficiency. Our results indicate that if increasing transport speed by 1 km per hour now, the fuel costs and total direct transportation costs for Chinese traders would reduce by 1.3% and 0.7% respectively.

Comparison of several demand systems AgEcon
Meyer, Stefan; Yu, Xiaohua; Abler, David G..
Using Monte-Carlo simulation, , we compare the most popular demand systems including the LES, AIDS, BTL, QES, QUAIDS and AIDADS, and find that different models actually have different advantages in estimating different elasticities. Specifically, QES, AIDS and AIDADS models are the best in income, own-price and cross-price elasticities, respectively. Overall, AIDADS model has the best performance. The results indicate that the rank three models are not necessary always better than the rank two models.

Consumer Willingness to Pay for Food Safety in Beijing: A Case Study of Food Additives AgEcon
Liu, Yuanyuan; Zeng, Yinchu; Yu, Xiaohua.
Constructing a theoretical framework and using a survey data of 294 customers from 25 supermarkets in Beijing, this paper studies the willingness to pay (WTP) for additive-free Mooncakes in Beijing and finds that age and income are important for WTP for “food safety” in China. Income is positively correlated with the WTP and there is an inverted-U-shaped relationship between age and WTP. This study indicates that consumers in Beijing are willing to pay 5.80 Yuan more for an additive-free Mooncake, which provides a good policy benchmark for the government regulation on food additives. Furthermore, the theoretical framework also provides a good benchmark for understanding WTP in the future study of food safety.

Long-run neutrality of money supply for food prices in Germany with policy effects AgEcon
Meyer, Stefan; Yu, Xiaohua.
Using a modified Fisher-Seater model with consideration of policy impacts, this paper attempts to tests the long-run neutrality of money supply on food prices in Germany after the launching of the Eurozone. The main findings include: (1) we can not reject the super neutrality of money for aggregated food prices; (2) However, staple food and its derived products – meat- are very sensitive to money supply, and their prices can increase to be much higher than money growth rate, perhaps due to speculative effects and demand effects; (3) Fresh or perishable products are usually less sensitive to money growth; (4) Most products decreased their prices after the launching of decoupling policy in Europe in 2003. The results can explain the links between money...

CLIMATE CHANGE AND PRODUCTION RISK IN CHINESE AQUACULTURE AgEcon
Holst, Rainer; Yu, Xiaohua.
Drawing on the method developed by Just and Pope (1978, 1979), this paper separately analyzes the marginal contributions of both regular input factors and climate factors to mean output and to production risk in Chinese inland aquaculture. Furthermore, the net change in output following a 1°C increase in annual average temperature will be determined. According to the results obtained, the impending changes in global climate will have both positive and negative impacts. While an increment in annual average temperatures will increase mean output and decrease production risk, an increase in temperature variability will reduce mean output and cause a higher level of production risk. The corresponding measures of precipitation however have no significant impact...

Endogenous Matching and Contractual Choice between Agricultural Processors and Farmers in China AgEcon
Abler, David G.; Yu, Xiaohua; Chen, Danhong.
Contracts are widely used by agricultural processors for purchasing inputs not only in developed countries but also in developing countries such as China. The total number of formal, written contracts between farmers and food processors is increasing rapidly in China, and the formal contracts that exist are becoming more complex. Contractual design in China is evolving from simple price-quantity contracts toward more complicated arrangements known as cooperation contracts or joint-stock cooperation contracts, designed to share risk and mitigate opportunistic behaviors by the contracting parties. Due to small farm sizes, the contracted amount in the typical contract in China is very small compared with Western countries, and each processor usually has a...

Applying the Payment Card Approach to Estimate the WTP for Green Food in China AgEcon
Tian, Xu; Yu, Xiaohua; Holst, Rainer.
This paper uses a payment card approach to reveal consumers‟ willingness to pay for green food in China. We first present a brief introduction of the payment card approach and introduce several methods to estimate the WTP with payment cards, which we subsequently use to estimate WTP values regarding green vegetables, green meat and green eggs in China. Our results indicate that consumers in big cities are willing to pay a higher premium for green food and that WTP values are relatively higher for more expensive food than for cheaper food. In addition, the ratios of premium to price range mainly between 25% and 50% and WTP values obtained from interval midpoint approach are relatively higher than those calculated by other approaches.

Rational Expectation and Education Rewarding: The Case of Chinese Off-Farm Wage Employment AgEcon
Hou, Linke; Wang, Xiaobing; Yu, Xiaohua.
This study establishes a life-cycle model that a representative agent chooses optimal time of education to maximize his/her life earning, which implies that there may exist nonlinear relation between education and earning. Using the data of Chinese off-farm wage employment, we find that the duration of schooling years will increase by 1.7 years with 1 percent increase in rate of return to education. The empirical results also indicate that controversies about return to education might arise from model misspecification without consideration of nonlinearity and sample selection.

Scale Effects, Technical Efficiency and Land Lease in China AgEcon
Wang, Xiaobing; Yu, Xiaohua.
Using a panel dataset from Zhejiang province in China over the period 1995-2002, we propose a two-step estimation procedure to investigate the links between land lease activity and production efficiency. We find that the output elasticity with respect to land, the scale effect and the technical efficiency are higher for farmers involved in land-lease activities. In addition, technical efficiency and land-lease activity are endogenous, and farmers with higher technical efficiency are more likely to lease more land and adopt advanced technologies to achieve higher profits, which in turn alters the technical efficiency.

Dancing with the Dragon Heads: Enforcement, Innovations and Efficiency of Contracts between Agricultural Processors and Farmers in China AgEcon
Yu, Xiaohua; Abler, David G.; Peng, Chao.
Contractual breaches are very common in developing countries such as China. In order to prevent breaches of contract, the contractual designs between farmers and agricultural processors (Dragon Head Firms) in China are innovating in two ways: organizational innovations and contractual innovations. Due to contractual innovations, simple price-quantity contracts are evolving into complex cooperation contracts. Using data for over 500 state key processors in 2003 from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, we construct econometric models to study contractual choices, contract intensity, and their impacts on sales and profits for agricultural processors in China. The results indicate that capital and the number of contracted farmers are endogenous to contract...

Machinery Investment Decision and Off-Farm Employment in Rural China AgEcon
Ji, Yueqing; Zhong, Funing; Yu, Xiaohua.
This paper investigates the linkages between farmers’ machinery investment decision and off-farm employment in China. Both the theoretical model and the empirical results based on a survey of 453 households in Anhui Province indicate that agricultural labor input and small-size machinery investment are gross complements rather than substitutes when machinery service is available in the market. Consequently, farmers with small machinery are more likely to reduce their off-time employment time.

Climate Change, Risk and Grain Production in China AgEcon
Holst, Rainer; Yu, Xiaohua; Grun, Carola.
This paper employs the production function-based method proposed by Just and Pope (1978, 1979) to explicitly analyze production risk in the context of Chinese grain farming and climate change, and test for a potential endogeneity of climate factors in Chinese grain production. Our results indicate that China might, at least in the short run, become a net beneficiary of climate change. In particular, we find that increases in annual average temperature increase mean output at the margin and at the same time lead to a reduction of production risk. Further calculations suggest that a 1 °C increase in annual average temperature would entail an economic benefit of $1.1 billion due to the increasing mean output. Furthermore, a Hausman test...

Consumer Preferences for U.S. Beef Products: A Meta Analysis AgEcon
Yu, Xiaohua; Gao, Zhifeng.
By conducting a meta-analysis using 50 observations collected from 15 primary studies, we systematically analyze heterogeneities in consumer preferences for U.S. beef products and the results have valuable implications both from a policy perspective as well as from a methodological perspective. The main findings include that consumers in European and Asian countries are willing to pay less for U.S. beef products than those in North American countries and that the BSE incidence in the U.S. substantially damaged consumer preferences for U.S. beef products outside the U.S. but not in the U.S. The results with respect to methodological heterogeneities also indicate that choice experiments yield higher WTP values and that the sample size is negatively...
