Chilling tolerance in Zizania latifólia Horticultura Brasileira
Ye,Zihong; Cui,Haifeng; An,Xinxin; Yu,Xiaoping.
ABSTRACT: The tumescent stems of Zizania latifolia are consumed as vegetable in southern and eastern Asia. This study aimed to compare photosynthesis and chilling tolerance parameters between two well-known Zizania latifolia cultivars: Longjiao 2 and Zhejiao 911, which are chilling tolerant and sensitive, respectively. We found that severe cold stress induced photosynthesis inhibition (5°C) resulted from non-stomatal factors. However, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (Tr) of the cultivar Longjiao 2 were higher than that of Zhejiao 911 with more gradual variations. Six parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence including latent activity of PSII (Fv/F0), efficiency of primary photochemistry (Fv/Fm), photochemical...

Biological control of golden apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata by Chinese soft-shelled turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis in the wild rice, Zizania latifolia field Scientia Agricola
Dong,Shengzhang; Zheng,Guowan; Yu,Xiaoping; Fu,Changhuan.
The wild rice, Zizania latifolia Turcz, used to be one of the important aquatic vegetables cultivated in China. Recently, the golden apple snail - GAS (Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck)) was found to be a major invasive pest attacking Z. latifolia. To control efficiently GAS, predation by the Chinese soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) on GAS was evaluated in laboratory and field trials. P. sinensis had a strong predatory capacity and selectivity for GAS both in laboratory and field conditions. All the sizes of P. sinensis prefer to capture smaller snails. The optimum number of P. sinensis released in Z. latifolia field was dependent on the density of over-wintered GAS, and varied between 30 and 50 turtles per 666.7 m². The number of GAS declined in...

Antifungal activity of metabolites of the endophytic fungus Trichoderma brevicompactum from garlic BJM
Shentu,Xuping; Zhan,Xiaohuan; Ma,Zheng; Yu,Xiaoping; Zhang,Chuanxi.
The endophytic fungus strain 0248, isolated from garlic, was identified as Trichoderma brevicompactum based on morphological characteristics and the nucleotide sequences of ITS1-5.8SITS2 and tef1. The bioactive compound T2 was isolated from the culture extracts of this fungus by bioactivity-guided fractionation and identified as 4β-acetoxy-12,13-epoxy-Δ9-trichothecene (trichodermin) by spectral analysis and mass spectrometry. Trichodermin has a marked inhibitory activity on Rhizoctonia solani, with an EC50 of 0.25 µgmL-1. Strong inhibition by trichodermin was also found for Botrytis cinerea, with an EC50 of 2.02 µgmL-1. However, a relatively poor inhibitory effect was observed for trichodermin against Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (EC50 = 25.60 µgmL-1)....
