Imitated natural light conditions during the artificial incubation may influence pullets' behaviour in being adapted to the diurnal rhythm. To study these effects, eggs were set in a commercial incubator either in the dark control or under full spectrum light tubes (Philips TL95, 36 watt). To imitate the light changes by a clucking hen, the eggs were exposed to light for twelve hours a day with a light-intensity of 20 lux. After six hours there was a step-up in light intensity to 1000 lux for 20 minutes. After hatching, the chickens were reared in paired groups under BIO SUISSE organic standards. Each group, containing 1000 pullets, was observed at the age of 2, 4, 8 and 10 weeks in 5 trials. Several categories of behaviour, activity and the diurnal rhythm... |

In poultry, breeding is carried out by a very limited number of international operating breeding companies. For laying hens two companies dominate the market. Laying hens are in general 4-way crosses. Since 1960 the majority of commercial layers are bred and housed in cages. Non-cage housing started to appear again from 1980 onwards and increases slowly in importance, at first in Europe, but recently also in North America. It is questionable if birds bred to perform in cages are also suited for free range housing. In this project we examine the performance of current genotypes in free range systems (organic and conventional), and if and how an improved genotype for free range housing can be developed. |

A longer life for laying hens is desired from an ethical point of view. Not only because the hens can be used for a longer period but also less male chicks would have to be killed at the age of one day. In large flocks of laying hens moulting has to be induced to prevent social instability in the flock. In this study, a method was investigated, to moult laying hens without too much stress for the hens. The chosen method with daily access to a bad weather hen run had no detectable negative effect on the behaviour of the hens. The moulting succeeded in improving egg quality and plumage condition. |

On-farm research is well established in organic farming. The holistic approach considers the complexity of a farm, and the findings can be imple-mented immediately. As the experiments are often performed on single farms the results are difficult to transfer to other locations. Controlled experiments with animals on group level with representative sam-ples investigate single factors and lead to reliable and well-founded results. However, they are often far away from implementation into agricultural practise. Applied research requires an interplay of on farm research and controlled experiments. A series of ethological research work at research institute of organic agriculture in Switzerland should show how this interplay may take place. |

In order to test the effect of organic vs. conventional diets on fertility traits, we conducted an on-farm study with female rabbits. Eight groups of seven to eight female rabbits kept in systems with litter were fed ad libitum with either organic or conventional pellets. Offspring was weaned with approx. 28 days. In the first series analysed, the conception rate was higher in the conventional groups. Diet type had no significant influence on that trait. Nevertheless, a significant influence of diet on litter size was found: organically fed female rabbits produced more offspring per litter. The organic groups also showed higher rates of weaned animals, despite of a slightly higher mortality of offspring in these groups, but differences for both... |

Organic poultry production has substantially increased in the last few years. On organic farms, welfare of poultry is enhanced due to enriched housing conditions as access to a free range area. This may reduce feather pecking and keep the health status at least on the same level as on conventional farms. However, welfare of organic poultry may be further improved if: (a) laying hens are already reared in enriched systems that are close to the systems in the layer house, (b) a frequent and even use of the run, (c) selection of suitable genotypes especially in relation to digestive ability, and (d) effective prevention and control of parasites. |
