Price Competition with Particle Swarm Optimization: An Agent-Based Artificial Model AgEcon

This study instructs an artificial price competition market to examine the impact of capacity constraints on the behavior of packers. Results show when there are cattle left for the lowest bidder after all other packers finishing their procurement, the capacity constraints make the price lower than the perfect competition level.

Effects of Country of Origin Labeling in the U.S. Meat Industry with Imperfectly Competitive Processors AgEcon

The study examines the impacts of implementing mandatory country of origin labeling (COOL) on producer and consumer welfare in the U.S. meat industry. The equilibrium displacement model developed in this study includes twenty-nine equations representing retail-, processing-, and farm-level equilibrium conditions for the beef, pork, and chicken industries. Unlike previous studies, the model allows trade between domestic- and foreign-origin products and considers the imperfectly competitive market structure of meat processers. Empirical results show that without a significant increase in domestic meat demand, producers are not expected to benefit from the mandatory COOL implementation. Heterogeneity in Producer's Marketing Strategy AgEcon

Producers can make their market timing decisions either based on fundamental or technical analysis to reach specific financial target. A generalized mixture model is used to discriminate producers into more than one segment according to their marketing strategies. The heterogeneous selling response is the same within each segment.

WILL COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN LABELING (COOL) BE 'COOL' FOR THE U.S. MEAT INDUSTRY? AgEcon

The study develops a Muth-type equilibrium displacement model that is able to estimate impacts of COOL on multistage beef production system and its trade relations. The model includes equilibrium conditions of each production stage with consideration of trade and market structure. A unique feature of this model is that it allows for retailer's oligopsony power separately from processor's market power. Simulation results indicate that the cost of COOL would outweigh the overall industry benefit unless COOL leads to low cost increases and more than a 10% increase in consumers' willingness to pay. The COOL provision is expected to have relatively smaller negative impact on cow-calf producers, backgrounders, and feedlots than on packers and retailers.
