Machinery Investment Decision and Off-Farm Employment in Rural China AgEcon
Ji, Yueqing; Zhong, Funing; Yu, Xiaohua.
This paper investigates the linkages between farmers’ machinery investment decision and off-farm employment in China. Both the theoretical model and the empirical results based on a survey of 453 households in Anhui Province indicate that agricultural labor input and small-size machinery investment are gross complements rather than substitutes when machinery service is available in the market. Consequently, farmers with small machinery are more likely to reduce their off-time employment time.

How does Biotech Labeling Affect Consumers' Purchasing Behavior? A Case Study of Vegetable Oils in Nanjing, China AgEcon
Dai, Yingchun; Tuan, Francis C.; Lin, William W.; Zhong, Funing; Chen, Xi.
This study analyzes whether biotech labeling has an impact on consumers'’ purchasing behavior in China using vegetable oils in Nanjing as a case study. Results from an Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) based on retail scanning data suggest that biotech labeling induced only a modest switch in vegetable oils consumption away from labeled soybean and blended oils and toward non-biotech vegetable oils.

Food Consumption for the Poor: A Supply or an Income Issue? Evidence from Less-favored Regions in Rural China AgEcon
Zhu, Jing; Hare, Denise; Zhong, Funing.
The world food crisis has brought about heated discussions on policy responses and actions to achieve future stability and security in food consumption for the poor. While many viewing it as a supply proglem and propose to cope with it by incrasing self-supply, there are also propostitions of viewing it more as an income problem. This paper has taken the experience of China into study. Being the most populous nation in the world and with rural low-income and low food consumption groups still a noticeable portion in the rural area, China has devoted strenuous efforts by utilizing various policy approaches. This paper has estimated empirically the impact of different policy measures, i.e., the predominantly used traditional policy aimed at increasing...

China's Expanding Role in Global Horticultural Markets AgEcon
Rae, Allan N.; Zhong, Funing; Zhou, Yingheng; Geng, Xianhui.
China's horticultural exports have almost doubled in value over the past decade, her imports have increased by even more, and China is increasingly a net exporter of horticultural products. After adjusting trade data for irregularities in the reported trade between Hong Kong and mainland China, growth in China's exports and imports is discussed. Major traded products and markets will be identified. Case studies are China's trade in fresh apples, which have become the major fruit export, and in cut flowers which are a relatively new export product for China. China's competitive position and market shares relative to other suppliers of apples and cut flowers to foreign markets are examined.

Actual Media Reports on GM Foods and Chinese Consumers' Willingness to Pay for GM Soybean Oil AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Zhong, Funing; Ding, Yulian.
Information has been proven to have significant impacts on consumers' behavior and willingness to pay (WTP). In this study, information on GM soybean oil is given in the form of real-life cases involving GM food. These cases recorded from actual media reports. Using a hybrid of the double-bounded and payment care elicitation approaches, Chinese consumers' WTP for soybean oil is examined both before and after these cases are presented to them. Results indicate that media reports on positive cases do not increase consumers' WTP significantly, while reports on negative cases drastically lower their WTP.

WILL MARKET PRICES ENHANCE CHINESE AGRICULTURE?: A TEST OF REGIONAL COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE AgEcon
Zhong, Funing; Carter, Colin A..
China is the world's largest producer and consumer of food. In the past, China's governmental policy advocated regional self-sufficiency in agricultural production, and it is generally believed that regional self-sufficiency was enforced at high economic cost. However, this changed with the 1979 economic reforms which encouraged some regional specialization. It is expected that there may be further shifts in regional production patterns and interregional trade flows. This article uses data on land productivity to test for regional comparative advantage, and it provides some empirical evidence on provincial comparative advantage in cotton versus grain production in China.
