Digestibility of organic processed feed ingredients in laying hens Organic Eprints
van Krimpen, M.M.; van Diepen, J.T.M; Reuvekamp, B.F.J.; van Harn, J..
In two experiments, digestibility and nutritive value for laying hens of organically-grown feed raw materials was assessed. Digestibility and metabolisable energy content of the products differed considerably compared to those listed in the CVB Feedstuff Table. Laying hens, organic feed raw materials, digestibility, nutritive value

Studies on preventive strategies and alternative treatments against roundworm in organic pig production systems Organic Eprints
Borgsteede, Fred H.M.; Gaasenbeek, Cor P.A.; van Krimpen, M.M.; Maurer, Veronika; Mejer, Helena; Spoolder, H. A. M.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Vermeer, Herman M..
Organic and many ‘low input’ production standards for pigs require outdoor access, and as a consequence expose the animals to a wide range of potential endo- and ectoparasite infection sources. Conventional anthelmintics are used to control parasitic infections, but their preventive use is banned by the organic standards. The present paper investigates the potential of prevention of infection through better hygiene. Attempts were made to break the infection cycle through thorough pen cleaning 10 weeks after the pigs had been introduced to the pen. Although pen fouling can be reduced, the level of roundworm (Ascaris suum) infection was not reduced. Regular deworming with conventional medication is still required in addition to good hygiene.

Cultivation, processing and nutritional aspects for pigs and poultry of European protein sources as alternatives for imported soybean products Organic Eprints
van Krimpen, M.M.; Bikker, P.; van der Meer, I.M.; van der Peet-Schwering, C.M.C.; Vereijken, J.M..
In this study, the conditions are described for successfully cultivation, processing and applying alternative protein sources in (organic) pig and poultry diets under European climatic conditions, thereby taking sustainability characteristics, and legislative aspects into account.

How to fulfill EU requirements to feed organic laying hens 100% organic ingredients Organic Eprints
van Krimpen, M.M.; Leenstra, F.; Maurer, V.; Bestman, M..
From December 2017 onward, including non-organic protein sources in diets for organic poultry will no longer be allowed in the EU. Moreover, in the EU the use of synthetic amino acids in organic diets is prohibited. The main dietary challenge in European organic egg production is to fulfill the protein requirement, especially the methionine (Met) requirement of the hens. Currently available Met-rich ingredients are discussed. In the group of ingredients of plant origin, expelled sunflower seed has a relatively high digestible Met content and is also commonly available. Met content of plant ingredients can be increased by selection of high Met varieties and by specifically breeding on high Met content, e.g. by crossing different breeds. Plant processing...

Alternative protein crops in diets of organically housed weanling pigs Organic Eprints
van der Peet-Schwering, C.M.C.; van Krimpen, M.M.; Kemme, P.; Binnendijk, G.P.; Jongbloed, A.W.; Henniphof-Schoonhoven, C..
The effects of feeding weanling piglets diets with three different levels of three organic protein crops on performance and health were studied. Diets with 10, 20 or 30% field beans (Vicia faba, variety Aurelia, tannin-free), 10, 20 or 30% white lupins (Lupinus albus, variety Dieta, alkaloid-low) and 20, 40 or 60% quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa, variety Atlas, saponin-free) were compared with a control diet containing 15% soybean expeller and 2.2% soybeans. Besides, the apparent ileal digestibility and the apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients of the control diet and the diets with 30% field beans, 30% lupins and 40% quinoa were assessed. At weaning, 1,055 weanling piglets were assigned to one of the 10 experimental treatments. The piglets were...
