Cost and energy evaluation of organic cauliflower in sole crop and living mulch systems Organic Eprints
Ortolani, Livia; Kristensen, Hanne L.; Campanelli, Gabriele; Bavec, Martina; Bavec, Franc; von Fragstein, Peter; Bergmam, Astrid; Leteo, Fabrizio; Canali, Stefano.
This paper presents the findings of an assessment aimed to evaluate, in terms of cost and energy consumption, the introduction of living mulches in different organic vegetable systems producing cauliflower. The study was carried out in three European countries (IT, SLO and DK) in the frame of the InterVeg project (Core Organic II). The achievements demonstrated that, in economic terms, farmers’ choice of a specific technique, like living mulch instead of sole cropping, can be influenced by two key elements: human labor and fossil fuel consumption. Different organic systems have a different proportion in using the two inputs depending on the specific farm strategy.

Intercropping of cereal and grain legumes in European cropping system (INTERCROP) is an European Project in which a multidisciplinary team of scientist conducts research on intercropping under different regional organic cropping systems. The project’s core experiments was a field trial in which pea and barley were intercropped in spring sowing and compared with respective sole crops during 2003-2005. One of the main deliverables of the Project (Workpackage 2) was the evaluation of agronomic performance of intercrop in term of yield advantage and yield stability. Results of this activity carried out, in five European Countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and United Kingdom) in the basic field experiments, are presented in this contribution.

Living mulch and vegetable production: effect on crop/weed competition Organic Eprints
Ciaccia, Corrado; Kristensen, Hanne L.; Campanelli, Gabriele; Bavec, Franc; von Fragstein, Peter; Robacer, Martina; Testani, Elena; Canali, Stefano.
Two field experiments were carried out in order to test the effect on weed management of living mulch introduction in organically managed cauliflower in Central Italy and leek in Denmark. Burr medic and Dyers Woad were sown as living mulch in Central Italy and Denmark, respectively. Different living mulch managements and cultivars were tested in strip plot designs. The main objective of the research was the evaluation of their effects on both crop growth and weed suppression. Biomass of crops, living mulches and weeds were measured and competitive indices were used to assess their competitive relationships. The results showed the effect of the agronomic choices (interseeding timing and crop cultivar) on weed suppressiveness and in avoiding living mulch...

Ertrag und Zuckergehalte bei Möhren nach Applikation der biologisch-dynamischen Präparate Hornmist und Hornkiesel in verschiedenen Umwelten Organic Eprints
Fleck, Michael; von Fragstein, Peter; Heß, Jürgen.
In 2002 and 2003 field experiments with organically grown carrots (cv. 'Rodelika') were performed to investigate effects of ridge vs. flat cultivation, nitrogen supply, EM application and biodynamic spray preparations on yield and sugar fractions. Particularly in the dry summer of 2003 ridge cultivated carrots produced lower yields than those from the flat system. In both years EMs resulted in higher yields; nitrogen fertilization (horn pellets) affected yields only in the first year. Biodynamic horn manure preparation decreased yields and increased glucose content of the carrots in 2003. In 2002 horn silica increased quantities of monosaccharides.

Yield performance of Faba bean– Wheat intercropping on spring and winter sowing in European organic farming system Organic Eprints
Pristeri, Aurelio; Dahlmann, Christoff; von Fragstein, Peter; Gooding, Mike J.; Hauggaard Nielsen, Henrik; Kasyanova, Elena; Monti, Michele.
INTERCROP EU PROJECT studied Faba bean–Wheat intercropping at different growing condition on European organic farming systems. During 2003-2005 in spring and winter cropping season different intercropping series were evaluated in Denmark, Germany, Italy and United Kingdom . In this contribution are reported the experimental results on yield performance of one additive and one replace-ment intercropping series.

Pea-barley intercropping for the control of weeds in European organic cropping systems Organic Eprints

Two pea-barley intercropping strategies were compared with respective sole crops for their capacity to reduce weeds. Crops were grown under organic conditions without mechanical weeding. Field trials were carried out during three years throughout Europe. Although crops were tested under diverse soil and climate conditions, in the presence of different weed species and varying weed biomass, it appeared in all experimental sites that weeds were better controlled in barley sole crop or in intercrops than in pea sole crop. Differences in the degree of weed control between crop treatments were already visible at flowering and sometimes increased until maturity. It is interesting to note that the substitutive and additive designs obtained similar results. The...

Can new organic cropping systems produce vegetables with lower use of resources and losses of nitrate? Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Hanne L.; Xie, Yue; Bavec, F.; von Fragstein, Peter; Campanelli, Gabriele; Ortolani, Livia; Canali, Stefano.
To secure a sustainable production of plant foods for the future, there is a need to develop new cropping systems. These systems should have reduced needs of external resources and reduced environmental impact, while product yields are maintained at high level. Therefore, field trials were performed in Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Denmark with the aim to study new organic cropping systems for production of vegetable crops; and the systems’ effect on labor and energy consumption and the risk of losing nitrate to the water environment. The cropping systems included an in-season living mulch to exploit ecosystem services by attracting beneficial insects, suppressing weeds, and taking up excess nitrogen during production of two high-value crops of leek and...

– Intercropping of cereals and grain legumes is a technology to enhance biodiversity in organic agro-ecosystems, enhance and stabilize yields and make better use of plant growth resources. Here we report the preliminary results of the EU FP 5 research project “Intercrop” carried out in five European regions. The project demonstrates several significant benefits which could be exploited to a greater degree in European organic farming .

Can living mulches in intercropping systems reduce the potential nitrate leaching? Studies of organic cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis) and leek (Allium porrum L.) production across European conditions Organic Eprints
Xie, Yue; Tittarelli, Fabio; von Fragstein, Peter; Bavec, Martina; Canali, Stefano; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg.
The effect of introduction strategy for living mulches (LMs) to reduce the potential nitrate leaching was investigated when grown with vegetables with high nitrogen (N) demand and low use efficiency in four European countries: Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Denmark over 2 yr. The plant N uptake and soil nitrate N content at harvest, in the autumn, and in the following spring were measured below open-pollinated and hybrid cultivars of cauliflower and leek crops. The cultivars performed differently over the 2 yr. In Italy and Slovenia, when LM of burr medic or white clover was broad sown (addition design ADD) at the same time as crop transplanting, the N uptake of crops was hampered without increasing the total aboveground N accumulation. Delaying LM sowing by...
