A suitable metocean hindcast database for the design of Marine energy converters ArchiMer
Boudiere, Edwige; Maisondieu, Christophe; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Accensi, Mickael; Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Lepesqueur, Jeremy.
Resource assessment as well as characterisation of site climatologies for the design of Marine Energy Converters requires data bases allowing an accurate description of the environmental forcing, especially waves and sea-states, on a high resolution grid. As a support to its research activities related to the development of marine renewable energies, Ifremer is building a specific hindcast data set for the assessment of sea-states climatologies. The main features of this database, built running an up-to-date configuration of the WaveWatch III® wave model on an unstructured grid extending from the South of the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay are presented here. Attention is given to the parameterization and forcing as well as the specific output data sets...

Génération de bases de données océano-météorologiques pour l'élaboration de climatologies adaptées au dimensionnement des structures en mer ArchiMer
Boudiere, Edwige; Maisondieu, Christophe; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Accensi, Mickael; Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Lepesqueur, Jeremy.
The number of Marine Renewable Energy projects has rapidly raised over the last decades. Those require a refined description of environmental conditions, such as sea states, for resource assessments as well as for the conception of the Marine Energy Converters. Engineering studies require long-term data sets so as to assess temporal variability and extreme events of sea states at the scale of the implantation sites.,As a support to its research studies on Marine Renewable Energy, Ifremer is building a specific hindcast database, running the wave model WAVEWATCH III® on an unstructured grid. The wave model extends over the area from the South of the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay with a high spatial resolution and covers a 16 years period from 1996 to 2012....

Floe Size Effect on Wave-Ice Interactions: Possible Effects, Implementation in Wave Model, and Evaluation ArchiMer
Boutin, Guillaume; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Dumont, Dany; Sevigny, Caroline; Girard Ardhuin, Fanny; Accensi, Mickael.
Wind waves may play an important role in the evolution of sea ice. That role is largely determined by how fast the ice layer dissipates the wave energy. The transition from a continuous layer of ice to a series of broken floes is expected to have a strong impact on the several attenuation processes. Here we explore the possible effects of basal friction, scattering, and dissipation within the ice layer. The ice is treated as a single layer that can be fractured in many floes. Dissipation associated with ice flexure is evaluated using an anelastic linear dissipation and a cubic inelastic viscous dissipation. Tests aiming to reproduce a Marginal Ice Zone are used to discuss the effects of each process separately. Attenuation is exponential for friction and...

Towards a coupled model to investigate wave-sea ice interactions in the Arctic marginal ice zone ArchiMer
Boutin, Guillaume; Lique, Camille; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Rousset, Clément; Talandier, Claude; Accensi, Mickael; Girard Ardhuin, Fanny.
The Arctic Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), where strong interactions between sea ice, ocean and atmosphere are taking place, is expanding as the result of the on-going sea ice retreat. Yet, state-of-art models are not capturing the complexity of the varied processes occurring in the MIZ, and in particular the processes involved in the ocean-sea ice interactions. In the present study, a coupled sea ice - wave model is developed, in order to improve our understanding and model representation of those interactions. The coupling allows us to account for the wave radiative stress resulting from the wave attenuation by sea ice, and the sea ice lateral melt resulting from the wave-induced sea ice break-up. We found that, locally in the MIZ, the waves can affect the sea...

The Sea State CCI dataset v1 : towards a Sea State Climate Data Record based on satellite observations ArchiMer
Dodet, Guillaume; Piolle, Jean-francois; Quilfen, Yves; Abdallah, Saleh; Accensi, Mickael; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Ash, Ellis; Bidlot, Jean-raymond; Gommenginger, Christine; Marechal, Gwendal; Passaro, Marcello; Quartly, Graham; Stopa, Justin; Timmermans, Ben; Young, Ian; Cipollini, Paolo; Donlon, Craig.
Sea state data are of major importance for climate studies, marine engineering, safety at sea, and coastal management. However, long-term sea state datasets are sparse and not always consistent, and sea state data users still mostly rely on numerical wave models for research and engineering applications. Facing the urgent need for a sea state Climate Data Record, the Global Climate Observing System has listed Sea State as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV), fostering the launch in 2018 of the Sea State Climate Change Initiative (CCI). The CCI is a program of the European Space Agency, whose objective is to realize the full potential of global Earth Observation archives established by ESA and its member states in order to contribute to the ECV database....

La Jument lighthouse: a real-scale laboratory for the study of giant waves and their loading on marine structures ArchiMer
Filipot, Jean-francois; Guimaraes, P.; Leckler, Fabien; Hortsmann, J.; Carrasco, R.; Leroy, Elodie; Fady, N.; Accensi, Mickael; Prevosto, Marc; Duarte, Rui; Roeber, V.; Benetazzo, A.; Raoult, C.; Franzetti, M.; Varing, Audrey; Le Dantec, N..
This paper presents results from an experiment designed to improve the understanding of the relationship between extreme breaking waves and their mechanical loading on heritage offshore lighthouses. The experiment, conducted at La Jument, an iconic French offshore lighthouse, featured several records of wave, current and structure accelerations acquired during severe storm conditions, with individual waves as high as 24 m. Data analysis focuses on a storm event marked by a strong peak in the horizontal accelerations measured inside La Jument. Thanks to stereo-video wave measurements synchronized to the acceleration record we were able to identify and describe the breaking wave responsible for this intense loading. Our observations suggest that this giant...

A surface kinematics buoy (SKIB) for wave–current interaction studies ArchiMer
Veras Guimaraes, Pedro; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Sutherland, Peter; Accensi, Mickael; Hamon, Michel; Perignon, Yves; Thomson, Jim; Benetazzo, Alvise; Ferrant, Pierre.
Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) and modern motion-sensor packages allow the measurement of ocean surface waves with low-cost drifters. Drifting along or across current gradients provides unique measurements of wave–current interactions. In this study, we investigate the response of several combinations of GNSS receiver, motion-sensor package and hull design in order to define a prototype “surface kinematics buoy” (SKIB) that is particularly optimized for measuring wave–current interactions, including relatively short wave components that are important for air–sea interactions and remote-sensing applications. The comparison with existing Datawell Directional Waverider and Surface Wave Instrument Float with Tracking (SWIFT) buoys, as well as...

This study presents the principles of the new coupling interface based on the SURFEX multi-surface model and the OASIS3-MCT coupler. As SURFEX can be plugged into several atmospheric models, it can be used in a wide range of applications, from global and regional coupled climate systems to high-resolution numerical weather prediction systems or very fine-scale models dedicated to process studies. The objective of this development is to build and share a common structure for the atmosphere-surface coupling of all these applications, involving on the one hand atmospheric models and on the other hand ocean, ice, hydrology, and wave models. The numerical and physical principles of SURFEX interface between the different component models are described, and the...
