INFORMATION FLOWS IN ORGANIC VALUE CHAIN RESEARCH – EXPERIENCES FROM THE PROJECT ’PRODUCTIVITY AND GROWTH IN ORGANIC VALUE CHAINS (ProGrOV)’ Organic Eprints
Andreasen, Lise; Halberg, Niels.
The project ’Productivity and Growth in Organic Value Chain (ProGrOV)’ is a combined research, development and capacity building project that focuses on different aspects of organic value chains in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. It is addressing the need for sustainable development of smallholder farming systems in East Africa with focus on value chains for local high-value markets as well as export chains through PhD and MSc projects at universities in the three countries. While some research has focused on improving productivity and Natural Resource Management of smallholder farmers in Eastern Africa this has most often not been linked with studies of how to link improved production to market access and quality demands. The project is developing a value...

Organic Research and Development in Denmark (1996-2010) - Effects on the Organic Sector and Society Organic Eprints
Andreasen, Lise; Rasmussen, Ilse Ankjær; Halberg, Niels.
The ICROFS (International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems) has conducted an analysis of the effects of organic research in Denmark (1996-2010) on the Danish organic sector and on society in general. Over these 15 years, three national programs and one program with European collaboration have been implemented in Denmark, financed via special government grants that amounted to just over 500 million DKK (approx. € 67 million—or approximately $ 80 million). The analysis itself was carried out as a compilation of information from three perspectives, each of which has been independently documented: • Interviews with (representatives of) end-users of results from research and development (R&D) investigating their assessment of the challenges in...

LCA of Soybean Meal Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Randi; Schmidt, Jannick; Halberg, Niels; Christensen, Per; Thrane, Mikkel; Pengue, Walter A..
Soybean meal is an important protein input to the European livestock production, with Argentina being an important supplier. The area cultivated with soybeans is still increasing globally, and so are the number of LCAs where the production of soybean meal forms part of the product chain. In recent years there has been increasing focus on how soybean production affects the environment. The purpose of the study was to estimate the environmental consequences of soybean meal consumption using a consequential LCA approach. The functional unit is 'one kg of soybean meal produced in Argentina and delivered to Rotterdam Harbor.

Simulering af fossilt energiforbrug og emission af drivhusgasser. Tre scenarier for omlægning til 100% økologisk jordbrug i Danmark Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy; Halberg, Niels; Fenger, Jes.

Organic Agriculture in a Development Policy Perspective Organic Eprints
Egelyng, Henrik; Halberg, Niels; Høgh-Jensen, Henning.
Farmers growing food with high eco-efficiency may be seen cultivating peace by reducing competition among nations for oil and as producers of other public goods: biodiverse landscapes and ecosystem services with more soil fertility, less water use and less pollution. How does Organic agriculture (OA) fare globally on eco-efficiency? Are most African farmers eco-efficient – or may eco-efficient farmers be found everywhere? As OA develops throughout the planet, what does Denmark do beyond Europe? Is organic farming part of our development policy? Do we dilligently share our comparative advantages in this field with developing nations? This article pursues these basic questions.

Organic Agriculture: A New Field of International Development Policy Organic Eprints
Egelyng, Henrik; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Kledal, Paul Rye; Halberg, Niels.
This paper reviews strategically selected global policy documents and development literature and analyse perspectives on the role of organic agriculture (OA) as a possible vehicle for sustainable development in developing countries. It shows that not only has compliance assessed organics made entry in terms of projects and programmes in many LICs. OA is also gaining position in formal policies and strategies of international donor agencies and organisations. If agriculture is generally “back” in development business, organic farming has certainly “arrived”.

How may quality asurance systems in food chains include environmental aspects based on life cycle methodology? Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
The number of Quality Assurance Systems (QAS) for food products is increasing and so is the topics they cover, from traditional intrinsic product characteristics such as percent meat in slaughtered pigs and protein content in milk to food safety issues such as zoonoses and pesticide residues and in some cases aspects of animal welfare. This development is linked to de-mands for risk controlling systems such as HACCP and traceability systems that would allow food safety problems to be traced to a small number of producers or farms. The large retail companies (supermarkets) are an important driving force for this development because of their efforts to build consumer trust in food products and loyalty to the companies own brands. Envi-ronmental...

Indicators of resource use and environmental impact for use in a decision aid for Danish livestock farmers Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
Farmers lack well documented sets of farm level indicators to allow their own evaluation of environmental impact and to stimulate the development of more environment friendly farming practices. A set of farm level indicators of resource use and environmental impact on livestock farms was developed as part of a decision aid for farmers. The indicators were meant to be part of an extended farm account and included the surpluses and efficiencies of N, P and Cu, the energy use per kg grain and per kg milk or meat, pesticide treatment index (TFI), % unsprayed area, % small biotopes on the farm, and % weeds in grain crops. The indicators were tested on 20 Danish dairy and pig farms over a period of 3 years in order to see if they were suitable for use in the...

Assessment of the environmental sustainability of organic farming: Definitions, indicators and the major challenges Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
The debate over agricultural sustainability continues due to the challenges of reducing externalities of intensive farming methods and preserving vital natural capital, but many definitions of sustainability are too wide to allow for a prioritized assessment. This paper uses a more narrow definition of agricultural sustainability focusing on the functional integrity of a system to highlight specific aspects of vital importance for the long-term resilience and reproducibility of agricultural systems. Key areas of resource sufficiency are also identified. Based on a review of scientific literature the relative sustainability of organic agriculture is assessed with a focus on environmental impact and resourceuse in Europe and North America. While there are...

The importance of support to coordination of the European organic research Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
Europe has been among the global leaders in research and innovation in high-quality food from organic agriculture serving the dual purpose of responding to consumers’ demand in high-value markets and respond-ing to national and EU agri-environmental and rural development poli-cies. There has been — and still is — a great need for research and innovation in organic food and farming because of its relatively recent development and because it is an alternative, which is very knowledge-intensive: a knowledge that cannot always be covered by results from mainstream agricultural research. In order to follow the principles of organic agriculture as laid out in, for example, Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 (1) (e.g. ‘the appropriate design and management of...

Farming the future Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
The sustainable production of high quality food, reducing dependency on high energy inputs, improving environmentaland nature conservation, climate change adaptation, animalwelfare and rural livelihoods, are all important challenges faced byEuropean agriculture which can be addressed through organicagricultural practices. However, while the sector has grown dramatically in recent times, much more research needs to be done for this innovative field to come to realise its true potential. As such, the CORE Organic II ERA-Net aims at an effective and sustainable transnational researchprogramme, and has identified common research priorities for the organic sector where a transnational approach will give added value, has initiated research projects, and is...

Energy use and Green house gas emission in organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
Reduction of fossil energy use has a two-fold aim namely reducing the dependence of a limited, non-renewable resource and reduction of emissions of green house gasses (GHG). Consumers interested in reducing their carbon footprint from food consumption may consider whether a shift towards eating organic foods will do the job? This involves two questions: Is organic food more energy efficient and –given that one is dedicated to eating organic – which products and which producers results in a lower GHG emission. From a farmer perspective it is interesting to know how the carbon footprint of the production may be reduced. Over time the principles for organic agriculture has included specific references to the question of reducing the use of non-renewable...

Researching Farmers Possibilities and Motivation for Including Environmental Aspects in their Management Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
The more than ten year old focus on the negative impact from intensive farming on the environment in Denmark challenges the agricultural sector as a whole and the individual farms in particular. Public pressure to strengthen the regulation of the farmers’ use of inputs threatens to raise costs and bind the individual farmer by detailed rules for crop rotation, fertiliser strategy etc. At the same time, there is evidence that this type of general regulation is not sufficient to reduce the environmental impact compared with overall goals (for instance, the goal of reducing nitrate leaching and pesticide use by 50% before 1997 has failed). This has lead to increased pressure to use economic regulation (nitrogen taxes etc.) which the farmers’ unions have...

Synthesis: prospects for organic agriculture in a global context Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Kristensen, Erik Steen.
As discussed by Knudsen et al. (Chapter 1) there is a rapid development in the global food chains towards increased trade and competition over long distances and very large corporate retail chains taking control over large parts of food trade. This global competition leads to a downward price pressure and demands for large volumes, standardisation, specialisation and high production efficiency and productivity for agricultural systems all over the world. This industrialisation of the agricultural sector leads to increased externalities in terms of emissions of nutrients and pesticides, loss of biodiversity and reduced animal welfare. Moreover, even though food production has increased significantly over the last decades and most countries engage in the...
