Household Expenditure Patterns for Carbohydrate Sources in Russia AgEcon
Shiptsova, Rimma; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Holcomb, Rodney B..
This study provides a unique view of the demand for carbohydrate sources in Russia at the household level. The data used in this analysis were obtained from a 1996 survey in eight Russian metropolitan areas. An almost ideal demand system (AIDS) model is used to examine the expenditures for potatoes, bread, flour, rice, and pasta. The impacts of household demographic factors on the consumption of carbohydrates are also discussed.

IMPLICIT PRICE ESTIMATION OF RICE QUALITY ATTRIBUTES FOR ASIAN AMERICANS AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Rister, M. Edward.
Product placement survey data for 192 Asian-American households in Houston were used to analyze the value of rice quality attributes via the Consumer Goods Characteristics model (CGCM). Five rice varieties were used for this study: domestic Lemont, Jasmine 85, Toro II, and two different Thai import varieties. For each variety, marginal implicit prices were calculated at the means for seven characteristics: color, texture, aroma, stickiness, flavor, aftertaste, and moisture.

Increasing U.S. Hard Red Winter Wheat Competitiveness in Latin American Markets AgEcon
Gallardo, Rosa Karina; Holcomb, Rodney B..
The United States wheat sector leadership in world markets is facing serious challenges. Canada, Australia, Argentina, the European Union (EU), and the Former Soviet Union (FSU) are growing contenders for international wheat markets. Wheat buyers´ concerns about quality specifications and its consistency have intensified without precedents in the last years. The study focuses on identifying the attributes that wheat buyers most value at the moment of purchase. The study will be done in two stages. The first stage will focus in estimating preferences from actual wheat transactions from different grain-sheds in the HRW growing area. The second stage will focus on the demand from Latin American millers and will estimate their attribute preference and...

Producers Cooperative Oil Mill: A Case Study in Strategic Planning for a Cooperative AgEcon
Kenkel, Philip L.; Holcomb, Rodney B..
This study examines the strategic issues and decisions of Producers Cooperative Oil Mill, a regional oilseed processing cooperative located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The process of strategic planning and strategy implementation in agribusiness has been the topic of numerous research studies and case studies. While cooperative firms have been the subject of case studies focusing on strategic issues, the unique aspects of strategic decisions in a cooperative firm have not been highlighted. The formulation and implementation of strategy in cooperative organizations is impacted by their business structure. This case study provides unique examples of how strategy formulation and implementation is impacted by the unique structure and values of a cooperative...

REVISITING ENGEL'S LAW: EXAMINING EXPENDITURE PATTERNS FOR FOOD AT HOME AND AWAY FROM HOME AgEcon
Holcomb, Rodney B.; Park, John L.; Capps, Oral, Jr..
Expenditure patterns were examined for food partitioned into food at home and away from home to test the veracity of Engel's law. The analysis employed several functional forms and a Heckman two-step methodology to account for censored-response bias. Engel's law was verified in every case.

Success Factors for New Generation Cooperatives AgEcon
Carlberg, Jared G.; Ward, Clement E.; Holcomb, Rodney B..
The goal of this research was to determine success factors for New Generation Cooperatives (NGCs). A self-explicated approach was used to assess the importance of various factors grouped in broad categories using data collected from a mailout survey of NGC managers. Results suggest that factors in the "Planning and Development" and "Financing and Costs" categories are considered to be critically important by NGC managers, though differences in factor rankings exist between managers of enterprises involved in the processing of different commodities.

SUCCESS FACTORS FOR VALUE ADDED NEW GENERATION COOPERATIVES AgEcon
Carlberg, Jared G.; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Ward, Clement E..
Two surveys of New Generation Cooperative (NGC) managers were carried out to ascertain the factors most important to their success. Factors in the Planning and Development as well as the Financing and Cost categories were most important, and NGCs with more employees and more members' equity are most successful.

Teaching Innovation as Part of an Agribusiness Curriculum AgEcon
Tilley, Marcia L.; Tilley, Daniel S.; Yiannaka, Amalia; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Howard, Wayne H.; Weckler, Paul; Cavaletto, Richard; Zohns, Mark; Sitton, Shelly; Blackwell, Cindy; Delahoussaye, Ronald; Jones, David.
Innovation is critical to the survival of agricultural businesses in the U.S. yet few universities have classes in their curricula that focus on innovation and innovation management. Innovation includes developing new processes and concepts and taking products based on those ideas to market. By its nature, innovation generally involves technical components, market assessment, business analysis, and implementation strategies that include marketing campaigns to a target market. As a result, if innovation is going to be experientially taught to students, the class will likely need to include concepts from multiple disciplines. The objectives of this paper are to present an outline of capstone/senior design classes designed to cause students to learn...

USING MIXED-INTEGER PROGRAMMING TO DETERMINE THE POTENTIAL FOR FLOUR-MILLING INDUSTRY EXPANSION AgEcon
Tembo, Gelson; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Kenkel, Philip L.; Tilley, Daniel S..
As in most predominantly agricultural states, agricultural producers in Oklahoma have expressed an interest in value-added processing opportunities. While Oklahoma produces mostly hard red winter wheat, most Oklahoma bakers require predominantly soft wheat flour for their products, almost all of which is purchased from out-of-state suppliers. An economic engineering-based, mixed-integer programming model was used to determine the optimal number, size, and location of additional flour mills in Oklahoma to capture this excess flour demand. The results suggest that additional mills are potentially justified and that the potential for additional milling will increase if Oklahoma soft wheat production increases.

Willingness-to-Pay for Attribute Level and Variability: The Case of Mexican Millers’ Demand for Hard Red Winter Wheat AgEcon
Gallardo, Rosa Karina; Lusk, Jayson L.; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Rayas-Duarte, Patricia.
In-person interviews were carried out with Mexican millers who were administered a conjoint-type survey designed to incorporate uncertainty in attribute levels. Two methods were used to model millers’ risk preferences: a modified mean-variance approach and an explicit expected utility approach. Controlling for variability, Mexican millers are willing to pay premiums for increases in quality factors such as test weight, protein content, falling number, and dough strength/extensibility. We find millers are not particularly sensitive to changes in the variability of quality characteristics. Out-of-sample forecasts suggest the mean-variance model provides an accurate depiction of actual Mexican imports.
