Etude des Solanderiidae de la Baie de Hansa (Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée) avec une révision du genre <i>Solanderia</i> (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) OMA
Bouillon, J.; Wouters, K.; Boero, F..
The morphology of the skeleton of the various species of the genus <i>Solandria</i> was studied by scanning electron microscopy. This allowed the listing of synonymies, and the number of valid species was reduced from 13 to 6. Keys and a comparison table have been established for species identification.

New Tetragonicipitidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from the Indo-Pacific OMA
Fiers, F.; De Troch, M..
During an intensive study of the copepod associations living on the seagrass <i>Thalassia hemprichii</i> (Ehrenberg) Ascherson in Gazi Bay (Kenya), three representatives of the harpacticoid family Tetragonicipitidae Lang, 1944 were found. <i>Diagoniceps laevis</i> Willey, 1930 previously reported from Bermuda (type locality) and the Bahamas. was found in Gazi Bay. Comparison with the Atlantic material revealed only minor differences. <i>Odaginiceps immanis</i> n. sp. is the fourth species of the genus, which was known until now from three species described from the Central Atlantic. The new genus <i>Mwania</i> is defined for <i>M. phytocola</i> n. sp. which, with its three-segmented endopodite of...

Variation in egg and larval quality in various fish and crustacean species OMA
Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
It is generally accepted, that a major constraint in the further development of marine fish and crustacean aquaculture, is the variable quality of eggs and larvae used for the hatchery-production of fry. Nonetheless, valid criteria to evaluate optimal egg quality have not been identified yet. Instead, particular indicators, are used, e.g. the fertilization and hatching rate, overall culture success during the first rearing period, etc., but these are not totally objective because hatchery-specific conditions may interfere. The biochemical composition of the egg may be one of the possible determinants of egg quality, which can be evaluated on a more objectie basis. In this respect, studied have been initiated to analyze in freshly-released eggs, the levels...

Etude des migrations nycthémérales du zooplankton dans un milieu marin peu profond OMA
Daro, M.H..
The Sluice-dock of Ostend, a shallow (1.5 m) marine biotope of 86 ha stays closed during some 6-7 months of the year and is not influenced by the tides. During 24 h cycles the nycthemeral migrations of the zooplankton at 5 depths in a watercolumn of 1 meter were studied in relation to several environmental factors: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorophyll content. The photosynthesis shows a minimum during the night and shows a maximum during the late afternoon, at which time the water-temperature is also maximal. Holo- and meroplanktonic organisms migrate towards the surface around 3-5 o'clock a.m., at which time the chlorophyll content is minimal, hence our hypothesis of nocturnal grazing, this phenomenon perhaps combined with a nocturnal...

Carotenoid producing bacteria in the accessory nidamental glands of <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. OMA
Van den Branden, C.; Gillis, M.; Richard, A..
1. The accessory nidamental glands of the cuttlefish, <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. show an intensive orange-red coloration in mature females. This colour is due to carotenoid pigments which occur in symbiotic bacteria. 2. Six different pigmented strains of bacteria were isolated. 3. The main pigment in five of these strains is beta-carotene. 4. The main pigment in the sixth strain is the keto carotenoid, adonixanthin.

Effects of changing food availability on population dynamics of the Sandwich Tern <i>Sterna Sandvicensis</i> OMA
Stienen, E.W.M.; Brenninkmeijer, A..
During the 20th century the numbers of nesting Sandwich Terns <i>Sterna sandvicensis</i> in The Netherlands have fluctuated heavily. After the collapse in the 19605 the number of breeding pairs increased only slowly and stabilised at a low level. Earlier studies showed that population trends may be related to changes in food availability. Since the Sandwich Tern is a highly specialised piscivorous seabird, which feeds almost exclusively on tour species of fish (herring, sprat, sandeel and greater sandeel), the Sandwich Tern is probably highly vulnerable to changes in the availability of its prey species. To determine the key factors influencing population size the Institute for Forestry and Nature research (IBN-DLO), in co-operation with the...

Aspects of the life-cycle of <i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (Nematoda; Monhysteridae) OMA
Vranken, G.; Thielemans, L.K.; Heip, C.H.R.; Vandycke, M..
<i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (De Coninck,1943) was collected from the sediment of the Sluice-dock, a euhaline-polyhaline lagoon near the harbour of Ostend (Belgium). The species was cultivated in large numbers on a bacto-agar medium with bacterial growth. Embryonic growth was studied at 30 °C and 30 promille S. Maximum embryonic length-growth occurs at the vermiform stage. Post-embryonic length-growth, studied at 25 °C and 30 promille S, is a linear function of time and may be expressed as l = 160.46 + 29.55(t-to), where to = time at the beginning of development; t and l = time (d) and length (µm). At 25 °C and 30 promille S, average embryonic development time and generation time are 4 and 9 d...

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 64. A new family of harpacticoid copepods and an analysis of the phylogenetic relationships within the Laophontoidea T. Scott OMA
Huys, R..
A new family Cristacoxidae is proposed to accommodate the monotypic genera Cristacoxa gen. nov., Noodtorthopsyllus Lang (ex Canthocamptidae) and Cubanocleta Petkovski (ex Laophontidae). Cristacoxa petkovskii gen. et spec. nov. is described on the basis of a single male collected from coralline sand of Bonaire, West Indies. N. psammophilus Noodt and C. noodti Petkovski are redescribed and refigured on the basis of new material from the Galapagos (Isla Santa Cruz), the West Indian Islands (Curaçao, Klein Curaçao, Bonaire) and the Canary Islands (El Hierro, Tenerife). The new family is characterised by the presence of an outer spinous process on the first antennular segment, the absence of the antennary exopod, the uniramous mandibular palp, the presence of...

Proposal for a short-term toxicity test with <i>Artemia</i> nauplii OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Persoone, G.; Claus, C.; Sorgeloos, P..
Although standardization of toxicity tests on aquatic organisms is an urgent necessity, very little has yet been achieved for the marine environment. As a first step in this direction, a simple, inexpensive and reliable short-term routine test with <i>Artemia</i> larvae is proposed. This test is the result of an extensive study in our laboratory, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of <i>Artemia</i> bioassays published by various authors. The major advantage of the brine shrimp as a test species is its continuous availability under the form of dry cysts which can be hatched very easily; this eliminates all biological, technological, and financial problems of stock recruitment and/or culturing. The acute test...

The genus <i>Batzella</i>: a chemosystematic problem OMA
Van Soest, R.W.M.; Braekman, J.C.; Faulkner, D.J.; Hajdu, E.; Harper, M.K.; Vacelet, J..
Biogenetically unrelated cyclic guanidine alkaloids and pyrroloquinoline alkaloids have been reported from sponges assigned to the genus <i>Batzella</i>. These sponges have been assigned to this genus because of their possession of a simple complement of thin strongyles in irregular plumoreticulate arrangement. Cyclic guanidine alkaloids were first reported from an alleged axinellid species from the Caribbean, <i>Ptilocaulis</i> aff. <i>P. spiculifer</i>, and subsequently from a second Carribean specimen identified as <i>Ptilocaulis spiculifer</i> and at the same time from a Red Sea poecilosclerid, <i>Hemimycale</i> sp. Closely related compounds were described from a Caribbean specimen identified...

Occurrence of <i>Artemia</i> in nature and its morphological development from nauplius to adult OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
The first written record of the existence of the brine shrimp only dates back to 1755 (Schlosser in Kuenen and Baas-Becking, 1938). Nonetheless this "filtering animal" was already known since much longer times by different ethnic groups who attributed a better salt production in the brine pools to the presence of <i>Artemia</i> ; hence its popular names such as brineworm, Salztierchen, verme de sale, sóféreg, Bahar el dud, Fezzanwurm, etc. Despite the primitive optical equipment available at that time Schlosser's drawings were very detailed and rightly give the adult animal 11 pairs of thoracopods. Several other scientists, including Linnaeus (1758), later described adult <i>Artemia</i> with only 10 thoracopods. This controversy...

Waterbird communities along the estuarine salinity gradient of the Schelde estuary, NW-Europe OMA
Ysebaert, T.; Meininger, P.L.M.; Meire, P.; Devos, K.; Berrevoets, C.M.; Strucker, R.C.W.; Kuijken, E..
The zonation of non-breeding waterbirds along the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands-Belgium), one of the longest estuaries in NW-Europe with still a complete salinity gradient, including a large freshwater tidal area, was described. Numbers of birds were counted monthly over the period October 1991 to June 1997. Highest numbers of waterbirds were observed in late autumn and winter, with annual peak numbers ranging between 150,000 and 235,000 individuals for the whole estuary. Based on a multivariate analysis different waterbird communities were observed along the salinity gradient. The polyhaline areas of the estuary were numerically dominated by the waders Oystercatcher and Dunlin. Due to the presence of a large brackish marsh in the mesohaline zone, the...

Changes in the fish fauna of the Oosterschelde estuary: a ten-year time series of fyke catches OMA
Hamerlynck, O.; Hostens, K..
Frequency of occurrence of fish species was monitored on a fortnightly basis in four fykes and a weir in the Oosterschelde estuary from 1979 through 1988. This was done in order to record changes in the fish fauna that may have occurred as a response to the construction of a storm-surge barrier in the mouth of the Oosterschelde (1984-1986) and the concomitant building of compartmentalization dams in the landward part. These compartmentalization dams reduced the freshwater inflow into the system. Principal component analysis using the annual averages in frequency of occurrence suggests a slight shift occurred in the fish community separating a cluster of years 1979-1984 from the cluster 1985-1988. Many of the changes in individual species could be...

Diversity of nematode assemblages along a Mediterranean deep-sea transect OMA
Soetaert, K.; Heip, C.H.R.; Vincx, M..
The diversity of the nematode assemblages along a Mediterranean transect off Calvi, Corsica, Mediterranean Sea (depth range 160 to 1220 m) was very high. There was no clear trend in species diversity with station depth, and diversity at the station located on the continental shelf was not markedly lower than that at the deep-sea stations. However, diversity decreased with increasing depth into the sediment. As with the macrofauna, nematode assemblages in the Mediterranean is explained by a slight dominance of some species, while no species are dominant in the Bay of Biscay. Generic (between-genus) diversity was much higher than the average species diversity within genera, indicating that the high overall species diversity was not caused by large numbers of...

Zonation and structuring factors of meiofauna communities in a tropical seagrass bed (Gazi Bay, Kenya) OMA
De Troch, M.; Gurdebeke, S.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
This study deals with the relation between tropical meiofauna and environmental variables by comparing the 'benthic' (i.e. in the bare sediment adjacent to seagrass plants) and the 'epiphytic' (i.e. in samples including seagrass plants) meiofauna associated with five seagrass species from the high intertidal to the high subtidal zone in Gazi Bay (Kenya). Ordination and variance analysis revealed three distinct 'benthic' and two 'epiphytic' meiofauna assemblages. These assemblages corresponded entirely with those identified for the seagrass species: a high intertidal pioneer association (<i>Halophila ovalis/Halodule wrightii</i>), an intertidal climax assemblage (<i>Thalassia hemprichii</i>) and a high subtidal pioneer association...

Dry aerosol deposition over the North Sea estimated from aircraft measurements OMA
Rojas, C.; Otten, P.; Van Grieken, R.; Laane, R.W.P.M..
A mathematical approach based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory is used to predict the wind speed, friction velocity and drag coefficient, which are then introduced in the well-known deposition model of Slinn and Slinn (1980), to calculate the dry deposition of heavy metals into the North Sea. This model is perfectly suitable for aircraft sampling considering the fact that usually due to safety reasons, flights at the reference height used in deposition models (10m), are not possible. To check this approach, deposition velocities were calculated based on the airborne concentrations of Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb obtained by sampling with the aid of an aircraft over the Dutch continental shelf of the North Sea. Results are in agreement with those found in the...

Contributions towards a specific DHA enrichment in the live food <i>Brachionus plicatilis</i> and <i>Artemia</i> sp. OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Sorgeloos, P.; Devresse, B..
This paper reports on enrichment techniques oriented towards a specific DHA accumulation in the live prey <i>Brachionus plicatilis</i> and <i>Artemia sp.</i> The product used in these experiments (DHA7) is an experimental emulsion with a DHA/EPA ratio 6.7:1. Rotifers enriched with this pure DHA7 emulsion contained up to 69 mg/g DW DHA and a DHA/EPA ratio of 1.6. The DHA/EPA ration could be increased to a much higher level by different enrichment techniques. Dilution of the DHA7 emulsion with coconut oil prior to enrichment also had a beneficial effect on the DHA/EPA ratio of the rotifers. Using a mixture DHA7/coconut oil 3:7 the DHA/EPA ratio could be raised to 4.9. In <i>Artemia</i> DHA levels were slightly influenced...
