Updating Geographic Distribution of Artemia urmiana GÜNTHER, 1890 (Branchiopoda: Anostraca) in Europe: An Integrated and Interdisciplinary Approach IBSS Repository
Abatzopoulos, Th. J.; Amat, F.; Baxevanis, A. D.; Belmonte, G.; Hontoria, F.; Maniatsi, S.; Moscatello, S.; Mura, G.; Shadrin, N. V..
Artemia urmiana (a species previously considered endemic of Lake Urmia, NW Iran) has been found in Lake Koyashskoe, a hypersaline lake on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean peninsula (Ukraine). Therefore, this is the first record of A. urmiana in Europe which updates its distribution. The species identification was based on an integrated and interdisciplinary approach using discriminant analysis of the morphometric characters, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular profile analysis. The data derived from the above mentioned approaches converge to significant similarity of the population under investigation with A. urmiana. The updated geographic distribution of the species, deriving from the present report, asks for additional contribution of other...

Software support for investigation of natural methane seeps by hydroacoustic method IBSS Repository
Artemov, Yu. G..
The natural gas seepages from the sea floor are commonly recognized acoustically by the flare shaped acoustic images, spreading vertically through the water column. These acoustic images, which are made up of echoes from numerous gas bubbles, convey a lot of information about features of individual bubbles and bubbling vents in whole. To study the ecological role of methane gas bubble streams it is important to obtain such data, especially: the area of a venting site; total number of bubbles, released per a time period; size spectrum and rise velocity of bubbles at different depths through the water column. An approach based on the use of calibrated echo-sounder, digital data recording and processing techniques can provide adequate quantitative analysis of...

Methane emission to the hydro- and atmosphere by gas bubble streams in the Dnieper paleo-delta, the Black Sea IBSS Repository
Artemov, Yu. G.; Egorov, V. N.; Polikarpov, G. G.; Gulin, S. B..
To estimate methane flux from natural gas bubble streams (seepages) a combined approach was applied, inclusive of detailed echo survey of investigated area and data analysis with the use of specialized software, GIS technique and mathematic simulation. A precise location map of methane seepages in the Dnieper paleo-delta region was obtained. In total 2200 seepages were identified at the investigated area of 378.1 sq.km, which release 16.74 106 m³ at atmospheric pressure (STP), or 12.0 10-3 teragram (Tg) methane a year. Statistical distribution of individual seepage methane flux rates conforms to the lognormal law. We found that 1.9 % of methane from gas bubble streams reaches the atmosphere in gas phase, while 98.1 % dissolves in the water column. Thus,...

Fauna of hypersaline lakes of the Crimea (Ukraine) IBSS Repository
Belmonte G.; Moscatello S.; Batogova E. A.; Pavlovskaya T.; Shadrin N. V.; Litvinchuk L. F..
Saline water bodies are critic, often extreme habitats with a small number of species. The small number of species can, however, be organized in different assemblages typical of the salt category dissolved into the water. For the first time a wide faunal study has been conducted (from 2002 to 2006) on hypersaline lakes of the Crimea peninsula (Ukraine) allowing us to recognize a total of 40 categories of zooplankton from 10 lakes in representation of the whole lake habitat of the peninsula. The only lake with water evidently influenced by the sea hosted the highest number of categories (20). The lowest number of categories (5) has been found in the lake which showed the highest salinity concentration. Apart the lake conditioned from sea water, other two...

Functional morphology of the horseshoe spot in the frustule of Planothidium species (Bacillariophyta) IBSS Repository
Bukhtiyarova L.M.; Lyakh A.M..
Morphology of the horseshoe spot (HHS) with the cavity has been investigated in details in several species of Planothidium Round et Bukht. that carry out an attached mode of life. On the base of photomicrographs obtained with light and scanning electron microscopy, the model of the HSS longitudinal section was designed and light rays tracing through it has been implemented. It has been shown that HHS is an optical system that may diffuse or focus light, depending on the refractive index of the matter inside the cavity. For the first time HHS functions are revealed in a living diatom organism: diffusion of light over the chloroplast side turned to the substrate. The vertical part of inner convexity generates on the attached valve the heating arc that...

Light absorbtion and maximum yield of photosynthesis during autumn phytoplankton bloom in the western Black Sea. IBSS Repository
Churilova, T. Ya.; Finenko, Z. Z.; Turgul, S..
In the frame of GEF/UNDP Black Sea Ecosystem Recovery Project the effect of nutrient availability on phytoplankton light absorption and maximum quantum yield of carbon fixation (фmax) has been investigated. It has been found out that chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) varied from 0.3 to 10 mg m-3 increasing from deep-water region to shelf waters. At the shallow stations, where upper mixed layer spread deeper the bottom of euphotic zone, the homogenous pigment distribution was observed. In the deep-water region the Chl a profiles showed the presence of a deep Chl a maximum (DCM) below a seasonal density cline. The functional characteristics of phytoplankton showed depth-dependent variation. The phytoplankton from DCM was characterized 20 % lower values of...

Estimation of 90Sr and 137Cs transfer from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Basin after the Chernobyl NPP accident IBSS Repository
Egorov, V. N.; Polikarpov, G. G.; Stokozov, N. A.; Mirzoyeva, N. Yu..
The 90Sr and 137Cs inputs from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Basin through the Bosporus Strait after the Chernobyl NPP accident were estimated. It is obtained that the 90Sr and 137Cs fluxes from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara are decreased with an effective exponential half-lives (T05) 9.5 years and 6.4 years, respectively. The estimations have shown that 110 TBq 90Sr and 250 TBq 137Cs in 1986-2000 was delivered from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Basin after the Chernobyl NPP accident. The radioactive pollution of the Mediterranean Basin will continue for 5 half-lives, i.e. 47 years for 90Sr and 32 years for 137Cs. The total 90Sr and l37Cs inputs from the Black Sea into the Mediterranean Basin have been assessed as 168 TBq and 311 TBq,...

Interannual variability of the chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature of the Black Sea IBSS Repository
Eremeev, V.N.; Jukov, A.N.; Piontkovski, S.A.; Sizov, A.A..
A comparative analysis of the Black Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration was based on the satellite data (PODAAC JPL AVHRR Pathfinder and SeaWiFS) for 1998–2005. The fields of dispersion and spatial gradient were analysed as well. On the interannual scale, no statistical relationship was found between the field of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a. The mesoscale variability (which masked the statistical assessments of interannual coupling) was well pronounced in the fields of both parameters. For the deep part of the sea, a sign of the wave-type origin of the variability of chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature was evaluated.
