Artemia urmiana (a species previously considered endemic of Lake Urmia, NW Iran) has been found in Lake Koyashskoe, a hypersaline lake on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean peninsula (Ukraine). Therefore, this is the first record of A. urmiana in Europe which updates its distribution. The species identification was based on an integrated and interdisciplinary approach using discriminant analysis of the morphometric characters, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular profile analysis. The data derived from the above mentioned approaches converge to significant similarity of the population under investigation with A. urmiana. The updated geographic distribution of the species, deriving from the present report, asks for additional contribution of other... |

The paper investigates the taxonomic composition, diversity and abundance of macrozoobenthos community in Kuwait Bay subtidal zone during different seasons of the year. Material for the study was collected in December 2009, and in March, June and September 2010 from five stations in Kuwait Bay. Seasonal and spatial variability was detected in the measured oceanographic parameters (salinity, temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, pH and turbidity) indicating their dynamic nature. A total of 200 species of macrozoobenthos and representatives of higher taxonomic groups belonging to 10 phyla have been identified from Kuwait’s Bay marine environment. The results indicated that species number was largest in polychaetes, gastropods, and bivalved mollusks. The abundance... |

The paper describes the structure of macrozoobenthos inhabiting Kuwait’s waters (northwestern Arabian Gulf). Material for the study was collected from 17 stations in December 2004. A total of 270 species of macrozoobenthos and representatives of higher taxonomic groups belonging to 10 phyla were recorded and identified. Species diversity was highest in polychaetes, gastropods, bivalved molluscs and crustaceans (83, 51, 52 and 38 species, respectively). Quantitative estimates of macrozoobenthos was studied in this geographic region for the first time. In the depth of 2–20 m the abundance of macrozoobenthos averaged 795 ind./m2. Polychaetes, gastropods and crustaceans prevailed in the sublittoral zone. In assessing species diversity the ecological indices of... |

To estimate methane flux from natural gas bubble streams (seepages) a combined approach was applied, inclusive of detailed echo survey of investigated area and data analysis with the use of specialized software, GIS technique and mathematic simulation. A precise location map of methane seepages in the Dnieper paleo-delta region was obtained. In total 2200 seepages were identified at the investigated area of 378.1 sq.km, which release 16.74 106 m³ at atmospheric pressure (STP), or 12.0 10-3 teragram (Tg) methane a year. Statistical distribution of individual seepage methane flux rates conforms to the lognormal law. We found that 1.9 % of methane from gas bubble streams reaches the atmosphere in gas phase, while 98.1 % dissolves in the water column. Thus,... |

Saline water bodies are critic, often extreme habitats with a small number of species. The small number of species can, however, be organized in different assemblages typical of the salt category dissolved into the water. For the first time a wide faunal study has been conducted (from 2002 to 2006) on hypersaline lakes of the Crimea peninsula (Ukraine) allowing us to recognize a total of 40 categories of zooplankton from 10 lakes in representation of the whole lake habitat of the peninsula. The only lake with water evidently influenced by the sea hosted the highest number of categories (20). The lowest number of categories (5) has been found in the lake which showed the highest salinity concentration. Apart the lake conditioned from sea water, other two... |

Morphology of the horseshoe spot (HHS) with the cavity has been investigated in details in several species of Planothidium Round et Bukht. that carry out an attached mode of life. On the base of photomicrographs obtained with light and scanning electron microscopy, the model of the HSS longitudinal section was designed and light rays tracing through it has been implemented. It has been shown that HHS is an optical system that may diffuse or focus light, depending on the refractive index of the matter inside the cavity. For the first time HHS functions are revealed in a living diatom organism: diffusion of light over the chloroplast side turned to the substrate. The vertical part of inner convexity generates on the attached valve the heating arc that... |

The concentrations of 137Cs, 40K, 90Sr, 210Ро radionuclides, mercury and polychlorbiphenyls were determined in the Black Sea mussels collected in four different areas of the Crimean coast depending on places of sampling, the shell length of mollusks and the stages of their gonads development. The study was carried out in the framework of CIESM “Mussel Watch” Programme. |

This book is the result of the longterm monitoring that integrated studies in hydrochemistry, hydrobiology and ichthyology conducted by the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas (IBSS), National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, near the shores of the Crimean peninsula. Surveys were carried out in the Karkinit Gulf and the inshore sea of Cape Tarkhankut, in the coastal zone and some bays of Sevastopol and at Cape Martyan (Black Sea), in the sea at Cape Kazantip and in the Eastern Sivash Gulf (Sea of Azov), six locations altogether. The habitats and environmental features typical of each of the regions are sketched. The inventories of phytoplankton and zooplankton species, their abundance and biomass estimates are offered for some of the inspected... |

A comparative analysis of the Black Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration was based on the satellite data (PODAAC JPL AVHRR Pathfinder and SeaWiFS) for 1998–2005. The fields of dispersion and spatial gradient were analysed as well. On the interannual scale, no statistical relationship was found between the field of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a. The mesoscale variability (which masked the statistical assessments of interannual coupling) was well pronounced in the fields of both parameters. For the deep part of the sea, a sign of the wave-type origin of the variability of chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature was evaluated. |
