Anchovies of the Sea of Azov and The Black Sea: Regularities of wintering migrations (Brief review) IBSS Repository
Shulman, G. E..
Close relation between internal (level of fat stores) and external (temperature fall) impulses of wintering migration of Azov and Black Sea anchovies Engraulis encrasicolus maeoticus and E. e. ponticus (“dosage principle”) was revealed. Schools with high fatness begin migration at more high temperature than that ones with low fatness. Intensity of migration also correlates with level of fatness. Regularities obtained may be used for study of wintering migration of other truly marine fishes.

Annual dynamics of abundance, biomass and survival of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay, Black Sea IBSS Repository
Pavlova, E. V.; Murina, V. V.; Kemp, R. B.; Wilson, J. G.; Parchevsky, V. P..
The first comprehensive data on species composition, abundance, biomass and survival (living/dead ratio) of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea) are presented. Marked differences were observed between the years 1998 and 1999, and these could be attributed to the hydrology and the eutrophication status of the different parts of the Bay. Shannon index and selected community parameters (number of species, biomass, numbers of individuals) indicated that South Bay was the worst affected part of the Bay with the greatest eutrophication impact on the meroplankton. The early larval stages of the barnacle Balanus improvisus and of the polychaete Polydora sp. were the most sensitive to presumed environmental stresses. It is suggested that the mortality of...

Antropogenic radionuclides in plants, animals and their environments in Antarctica IBSS Repository
Giuliani, S.; Triulz, C.; Vaghi, M..
In the framework of the Italian National Research Program in Antarctica (PNRA), the Laboratory of Radioecology of the University of Parma developed from 1987 several researches on terrestrial and marine samples. At first the prin-cipal aim was the study of 90Sr, 137Cs, 238Pu, 239+240Pu and 241Am concentrations in samples of soil, ice, seawater and biota collected near the Italian Antarctic Base (Ross Sea, Terra Nova Bay).

Application of esterase polymorphism to specify population genetic structure of Engraulis encrasicolus (Pisces: Engraulidae) the Black and Azov Seas IBSS Repository
Ivanova, P.P.; Dobrovolov, I.S.; Bat, L.; Kideys, A.E.; Nikolsky, V.N.; Yuneva, T.V.; Shchepkina, A.M.; Shulman, G.E..
Genetic structure of anchovy populations was studied using genetic-biochemical markers. Anchovy samples collected between 1980 and 2006 from different Black Sea regions (off the Bulgarian, Turkish, Ukraine, and Georgian coasts) as well as from the Sea of Azov were analyzed. Three methods of electrophoresis were applied: starch gel electrophoresis, vertical polyacrylamide electrophoresis, and isoelectric focusing on thin polyacrylamide ampholine gel plates. On the base of long-term monitoring of allelic frequencies of the polymorphic non-specified esterases loci (EST-1* and EST-2*), wintering migration of Azov anchovy may have alternative routs along the western Black Sea coasts. Typical Azov anchovy winter together with the Black Sea anchovy form the mixed...

Arctodiaptomus salinus (Daday, 1885) (Calanoida, Copepoda) в соленых водоемах Крыма IBSS Repository
Ануфриева Е.В.; Шадрин Н.В..

Assessment of ecological risk to populations of aquatic invertebrates IBSS Repository
Tsytsugina, V. G..
On the base of experimental data and cytogenetic studies of marine and freshwater invertebrates natural populations it was shown that different species had approximately equal part (%) of full value posterity at the same average level of chromosome mutagenesis for populations, independing on deleterious factors and females fecundity. This phenomenon made it possible to calculate specimens reproductive contribution for species with different females fecundity and to assess expected reduction of population adaptive potential and the increase of ecological risk at different levels of population damage. It is suggested that the adaptation to pollution will be more effective in populations with high female fecundity.

Availability of data for the Black Sea climate change research IBSS Repository
Vladymyrov, V..
This review presents a brief analysis and sources (including URLs for the Internet sources) of the most interesting and informative Black Sea oceanographic data sets (excluding satellite data) that are now available for the scientific community with the main attention on the long term data sets. The results of the analysis show that a number of the available Black Sea datasets is growing permanently. However, this process is still rather slow and insufficient. One can hope that new international projects that cover the Black Sea region will drastically improve the situation in nearest years. The attempts should be made as well to create the united reliable quality checked data time series especially for biological data for which long time series do not...

Availability of Marine Biological Data for the Black Sea IBSS Repository
Vladymyrov, V. L.; Sergeeva, O. V.; Skuratova, K. A..
First oceanographic data sets for the Black Sea available via Internet or on the digital data carriers appeared at the end of 1990-th. From this time their number has been growing tremendously. We started to review these data sources in June 1999 and repeated this work with the interval of 1.5 - 4 years. In this review we analyze the marine biological data because availability of this type of data is less known and attract more interest nowadays. We treat lists and check-lists of species as biological data as well although formally they are more metadata or information than data itself. In 1999 only three Black Sea biological data and information sources were available on Internet: (1) Black Sea Red Book that is still on-line at...

Biodiversity of Zoobenthos in the Coastal Zone of the South Coast of Crimea (Laspi Bay Area) IBSS Repository
Revkov N.K.; Nikolaenko T.V..
Based on data of a1996 benthos survey, the structure of soft bottom zoobenthos of Laspi Bay (South Coast of Crimea, the Black Sea) was examined. One hundred thirty-one species of macrozoobenthos, including 44 molluscan species, 43 annelids, 31 crustaceans and 13 species representing other groups, were recorded. Two biocenoses were distinguished: Chamelea gallina and Mytilus galloprovincialis within the depths 5–52 m. The first biocenosis was presented by two biocenosic complexes. Their structure was characterized using Shannon, Simpson, and Pielou indices. The representativeness of the basic taxonomic groups of the benthos was analyzed. The conclusion of the high species abundance of benthos in Laspi Bay was made. There...
