IBSS Repository

Light absorbtion and maximum yield of photosynthesis during autumn phytoplankton bloom in the western Black Sea. IBSS Repository
Churilova, T. Ya.; Finenko, Z. Z.; Turgul, S..
In the frame of GEF/UNDP Black Sea Ecosystem Recovery Project the effect of nutrient availability on phytoplankton light absorption and maximum quantum yield of carbon fixation (фmax) has been investigated. It has been found out that chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) varied from 0.3 to 10 mg m-3 increasing from deep-water region to shelf waters. At the shallow stations, where upper mixed layer spread deeper the bottom of euphotic zone, the homogenous pigment distribution was observed. In the deep-water region the Chl a profiles showed the presence of a deep Chl a maximum (DCM) below a seasonal density cline. The functional characteristics of phytoplankton showed depth-dependent variation. The phytoplankton from DCM was characterized 20 % lower values of...

Long-term changes in populations of seabirds on Petermann Island and surrounding islands in Graham Land, Antarctic Peninsula IBSS Repository
Rider, М.; Dykyy, I. V.; Naveen, R.; Timofeyev, V .А.; Chesalin, М. V.; Forrest, S.; Lynch, H.; Bullock, I.; Miller, А.; Dagit, R..
The comparison of new and historic census counts of pygoscelid penguins and other seabird populations on Petermann Island (65°10'S, 64°10'W) and neighboring islands shows several trends consistent with theories of climate-mediated change in the Antarctic Peninsula. Long-term data on the number of gentoo nests on Petermann Island show that their abundance has increased about 30 times from beginning of the 20th century, 3–4 times from 1970–80, and has doubled since 1990. In contrast, the abundance of Adélie penguin nests on Petermann Island diminished about four times since 1970 and two times since 1997. The newly discovered gentoo penguin rookeries on Moot Point, the Yalour Islands, Galindez Island and Cape Tuxen represent the southernmost locations where...

Al-Rifaie K.; Al-Yamani F.; Lennox A.; Boltachova N.; Revkov N.; Grintsov V.; Kolesnikova E.; Murina V..
The paper investigates the taxonomic composition, diversity and abundance of macrozoobenthos community in Kuwait Bay subtidal zone during different seasons of the year. Material for the study was collected in December 2009, and in March, June and September 2010 from five stations in Kuwait Bay. Seasonal and spatial variability was detected in the measured oceanographic parameters (salinity, temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, pH and turbidity) indicating their dynamic nature. A total of 200 species of macrozoobenthos and representatives of higher taxonomic groups belonging to 10 phyla have been identified from Kuwait’s Bay marine environment. The results indicated that species number was largest in polychaetes, gastropods, and bivalved mollusks. The abundance...

Meiobenthos from an active methane seepage area in the NW Black Sea IBSS Repository
Gulin, M.B.; Sergeeva, N.G..
Meiobenthos densities and higher taxon composition were studied in an active gas seepage area at depths from 182 to 252 m in the submarine Dnieper Canyon located in the northwestern part of the Black Sea. The meiobenthos was represented by Ciliata, Foraminifera, Nematoda, Polychaeta, Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Amphipoda, and Acarina. Also present in the sediment samples were juvenile stages of Copepoda and Cladocera which may be of planktonic origin. Nematoda and Foraminifera were the dominant groups. The abundance of the meiobenthos varied between 2397 and 52,593 ind.m-2. Maximum densities of Nematoda and Foraminifera were recorded in the upper sediment layer of a permanent H2S zone at depths from 220 to 250 m. This dense concentration of meiobenthos was found...

Meiobenthos of deep-water anoxic hydrogen sulphide zone of the Black Sea IBSS Repository
Sergeeva, N.G..
The study examined bottom sediments collected at 40 stations from 400 to 2250-m depths of the Black Sea. Obtained results demonstrate the diversity of organisms specific for anaerobic zone of the sea. The deep-sea bottom dwellers are subdivided according to the origin as 1) species common on the Black Sea shelf, transferred down to the depth and adapted to the toxic environment, and 2) endemics of the permanent hydrogen sulphide zone. The endemic fauna considerably differs from fauna in oxic zone. Bathyal fauna of the Black Sea consists mostly of organisms with dimensional and ecological characteristics inherent in meiobenthos. The data of the investigation point out that the concept about “azoic or lifeless permanent hydrogen sulphide zone of the Black...

Methane emission to the hydro- and atmosphere by gas bubble streams in the Dnieper paleo-delta, the Black Sea IBSS Repository
Artemov, Yu. G.; Egorov, V. N.; Polikarpov, G. G.; Gulin, S. B..
To estimate methane flux from natural gas bubble streams (seepages) a combined approach was applied, inclusive of detailed echo survey of investigated area and data analysis with the use of specialized software, GIS technique and mathematic simulation. A precise location map of methane seepages in the Dnieper paleo-delta region was obtained. In total 2200 seepages were identified at the investigated area of 378.1 sq.km, which release 16.74 106 m³ at atmospheric pressure (STP), or 12.0 10-3 teragram (Tg) methane a year. Statistical distribution of individual seepage methane flux rates conforms to the lognormal law. We found that 1.9 % of methane from gas bubble streams reaches the atmosphere in gas phase, while 98.1 % dissolves in the water column. Thus,...

Microcalorimetry of the smallest plankton fraction: in search for the sources of heat dissipation IBSS Repository
Mukhanov, V. S.; Kemp, R. B..
Heat production by the plankton pico (0.2 to 2 μm) and femto (<0.2 μm) fractions was measured in the dark using a microcalorimetric method. It was surprisingly found that the femtofraction (FF) produced more heat per seawater volume (48 ± 24 (95% CI) μW l-1) than the picofraction (25 ± 14 μW l-1). Consequently, we tested two hypotheses which could explain the phenomenon through a differentiation between the potential sources of heat in FF: (i) metabolism of ultramicrobacteria, the only living component in the fraction besides the non-metabolizing virioplankton which are unable to produce heat; (ii) extracellular chemical processes in aquatic environments. Results of microcalorimetry and respirometry combined with the use of antimicrobial agents...

IBSS Repository

Molecular characterization of Kudoa nova (Myxosporea: Multivalvulida) infecting the round goby Neogobius melanostomus from the Sea of Azov IBSS Repository
Pascual S.; Abollo E.; Yurakhno V.; Gaevskaya A..
Diagnosis of Kudoa nova infecting the skeletal muscle tissue of round gobiid Neogobius melanostomus collected in the Sea of Azov was done by adding molecular data to the demographic and morphological characterizations of the parasite. The small subunit (SU) ribosomal DNA sequence analysis revealed Kudoa nova cluster within clade that includes Kudoa paniformis, Kudoa dianae, Kudoa sp., Kudoa miniauriculata, Kudoa alliaria and Kudoa rosenbuschi. Results on the molecular sequence data of Kudoa nova provide new evidence to discuss the hypothesis of tissue tropism playing an important role in the radiation of kudoids.

IBSS Repository

NATURALLY OCCURRING RADIONUCLIDE 210Po IN THE BLACK SEA MOLLUSCS IBSS Repository
Lazorenko, G. E.; Polikarpov, G. G.; Pirkova, A. V.; Osvath, I..
210Po accumulation by five species of the Black Sea molluscs inhabiting the Sevastopol bays was studied. 210Ро concentrations in investigated mollusks vary widely and depend on the type of their nutrition. The highest concentration was found in the Far-Eastern giant oyster and the lowest one – in nana. 210Po accumulation by the Black Sea mussels depends on their individual wet weight (WW), the stages of maturity of the gonads and inhabitancy condition. Such dependences were found for the Far-Eastern giant oyster. Concentration Factors (CF) of 210Po for the Black Sea molluscs vary from 7x10^3 to 5.2x10^4. This is in good agreement with World Ocean average value for 210Po CF for molluscs which equals 3x10^4.
