Anatomical Variants of Anterior Cerebral Arterial Circle: A Study by Multidetector Computerized 3D Tomographic Angiography International Journal of Morphology
Jiménez-Sosa,Michelle Stephanie; Cantu-Gonzalez,Juan Ramón; Morales-Avalos,Rodolfo; de la Garza-Castro,Oscar; Quiroga-Garza,Alejandro; Pinales-Razo,Ricardo; Elizondo-Riojas,Guillermo; Elizondo-Omaña,Rodrigo E; Guzmán- López,Santos.
One of the most common causes of stroke is rupture of aneurysms whose approach requires knowledge of anatomical variants. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anatomical variants of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) and the anterior communicating artery (AComA) by 3D computed tomography angiography (3D CTA) in Mexican individuals. A retrospective, observational, cross-sectional descriptive study of 283 patients, independent of sex or age, in which morphometric measurements of cerebral vessels were evaluated using contrasted 3D CTA from a period of two years was performed. We found at least one "atypical" variant in a third of the study population (33.93 %). The most common "atypical" variant was the absence of the AComA (14.1 %). A...

SegmentSpecific Expression of MMP/TIMP in the Oviduct of Llama (Lama glama) and Gelatinolytic Activity in the Oviductal Fluid International Journal of Morphology
Zampini,Renato; Apichela,Silvana; Sari,Luciana; Angiono,Georgina; Lombardo,Daniel; Miceli,Dora; Argañaraz,Martin.
Oviductal molecules have the potential to improve the reproductive biotechnologies. In camelids, knowledge and assessment of the oviductal environment are necessary to successfully develop species-specific reproductive technologies, especially because of the camelids reproductive particularities. Among the oviductal factors, the matrix metalloproteinases/tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases system (MMPs/TIMPs) should be investigated more thoroughly due to their participation in reproductive processes. Consequently, the current study assayed gene and protein expression of MMPs throughout the llama oviduct. MMPs zymogen and active forms in the oviductal fluid were also characterized. MMP2 and MMP9 transcripts were detected in ampulla, isthmus,...

Contribución Proximal del Nervio Ulnar para la Formación del Nervio Digital Palmar Propio Ulnar del Dedo Mínimo International Journal of Morphology
Pacheco,J. P; Olave,E.

Osteology and Myology of the Cephalic Region and Pectoral Girdle of Pangasius macronema, With a Discussion on the Synapomorphies and Phylogenetic Relationships of the Pangasiidae (Teleostei: Siluriformes) International Journal of Morphology
Diogo,Rui.
The cephalic and pectoral girdle structures of Pangasius macronema are described and compared with those of another representative of the same genus, Pangasius larnaudii, and of representatives of the other pangasiid genus, Helicophagus leptorhynchus and Helicophagus typus, as well as of several other catfishes, as the foundation for a discussion of the synapomorphies and phylogenetic relationships of the Pangasiidae. The following two features could constitute Pangasiidae autapomorphies: 1) presence of prominent crest on the dorso-lateral surfaces of both the hyomandibulo-metapterygoid and the ento-ectopterygoid; 2) presence of a large, circular foramen between the anterodorsomedial surface of the extrascapular, the dorsomesial surface of the pterotic and...

The morphological characteristics of the hooves of two groups of horses were studied. The first group was comprised of six adult animals without any treatment and served as the control. The other group, comprised of seven horses, received carbohydrates overload orally. Of these, 71% developed laminitis between 36 and 48 hours after carbohydrate administration. After 48 hours of induction, the animals were sacrificed and their fore limbs and hindlimbs were removed for histologic study. Tissue sections 5 to 7 µm thick were obtained, stained with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) or periodic acid Schiff's (PAS), and then examined by light microscopy. It was possible to identify in horses from the laminitis group, morphological and structural changes in the...

Comparison of Cerebellar Volume Between Subjects with Bilateral Congenital Blindness and Healthy Individuals International Journal of Morphology
Kosif,Rengin; Sahin,Bünyamin; Gürel,Safiye.
Cerebellum regulates motor control and physical coordination. It is known that when eye and hand need to be worked in combination, cerebellum is active and it provides coordination between eye and hand. Cerebellar cortex atrophy appears with dismetry and saccadic eye movement. If there is no stimulant related to vision, how cerebellum is adopted under this circumstance? In order to explore this, 27 male and 16 female volunteers with bilateral congenital blindness were compared with 35 male and 33 female healthy volunteers in this study. MR images of cross-sectional sequential cerebellum of volunteers with 1.5 mm thickness were realized in coronal plane. The surface area of apparent cerebellum seen in cross-sections was calculated by using Onis (Ver. 2.1)...

Differential Effect of the Route of Inoculation of Rabies Virus on NeuN Immunoreactivity in the Cerebral Cortex of Mice International Journal of Morphology
Rengifo,Aura Caterine; Umbarila,Vanessa Jazmin; Garzón,Mary Janeth; Torres-Fernández,Orlando.
Rabies is a lethal disease caused by a neurotropic virus that produces inconspicuous morphological changes hardly observable with conventional histopathology. The fatal outcome caused by rabies could be attributed to specific biochemical changes that severely impact neuronal function. The neuronal nuclear protein (NeuN) has become a widely used neuronal marker for the research and the histopathological diagnosis of nervous system diseases. To evaluate the distribution of the protein NeuN in the motor cortex of normal and rabies-infected mice adult ICR mice were inoculated with rabies virus either intramuscularly or intracerebrally. Rabies-infected mice were sacrificed at the terminal stage of the disease. Control mice were also euthanized at the same age....

Physical effort stimulates an increase in oxygen consumption in tissues, generating toxic chemical species derived from oxygen (ROS), which are considered the initiators of the lipid peroxidation process (LPO), the major mechanism of cellular injury. As the essential mechanism for maintaining the electrolyte balance depends on an effective kidney function, oxidative stress in this organ can be a key factor in the development and persistence of hypertension. This study aimed to determine the kidney changes induced by a combination of fluid restriction and exercise in rats. The study consisted of 24 male Wistar rats of 90 days of age, divided into four groups, two of which were submitted to water restriction and exercise on a treadmill.Twenty-four hours...

Age Effect in the Morphological Traits Performance for Sex Determination in Human Skulls and Mandibles International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that diagnostic performance of the morphological indicators for sexual dimorphism are reduced as they are applied in skull and mandibles of older subjects. We used 275 adult human skulls, 250 of these with mandible, all subjects with sex and age registry. Sixteen classic morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were evaluated, this information was compared with the registry and results noted in terms of precision. The best general performance of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were recorded in the 31 - 40 and 61 - 70 years, age range groups. Lowest precision ws recorded in the group corresponding to subjects between 21 30 years. Our results do not support the proposed hypothesis and suggest a...
