Frequency demodulation on otolith numerical images for the automation of fish age estimation ArchiMer
Troadec, Herve.
A method to assist the reading of calcified structures with digital images is proposed. An a priori growth pattern is introduced in the image processing to take into account both the variability of the ring size and the non-linearity of their growth. The introduction of biological knowledge is performed within a demodulation processing using the reciprocal growth function. The ring number is estimated by spectral analysis. The constraints introduced by the growth model are weak since they are restricted to the definition of L0, in the case of an exponential model, or of L∞ in the case of a Von Bertalanffy model. When applied to larval Dover sole otoliths (Solea solea) results close to the expert's are obtained. In the case of saithe otoliths (Pollachius...

Prouzet, Patrick; Martinet, Jean-pierre; Badia, Jacques.
The study of logbooks from commercial fishermen on the Adour River and commercial samples allowed characterization of the allis shad population (Alosa alosa L.) caught during the period 1988-91. A better knowledge of the influence of hydroclimatic factors (rate of river flow and intensity of tidal coefficient) on the catchability of the species in that never was also obtained. Allis shad are mainly recruited to this fishery from the beginning of April to the end of May: between 78 and 89 % depending on year. Males in the population were on average younger than females. However, at the same age, males were significantly smaller in size and in weight than females. These results reinforce the knowledge already obtained on French stocks in the Loire and...

Leaute, Jean-pierre.
To estimate the size, age and abundance distribution of juvenile sole (Solea solea) of nurseries in the Pertuis charentais (France) in 2006, a small beam trawl of 2 m wide and 8 mm stretched mesh was used over a hundred sampling points. The other fish catches have also been recorded and water temperatures measured.

Gaamour, A.; Missaoui, M.; El Abed, A.; Deniel, Ch..
A new osseous part, the opercula bone, is used to estimate the age of 2099 round sardine Sardinella aurita, Valenciennes, 1847 captured in the Cap Bon area. The period of sampling, with a monthly rhythm, is spread out June 1994 at December 1995 and from June to September 1996. The relation between the length of fish (LF) and the ray of opercula (RT) is LF = 22,25 RT 0,994. The validation of the age estimate method is carried out directly by the monthly follow-up of average marginal lengthening and the percentage of individuals with marginal hyaline zone. This study showed that the round sardine has a double cycle of growth per year. The analysis of the key age-length shows that the females dominate in the majority of the age groups. The parameters of...

Ghorbel, M.; Ould Yarba, L.; Bouain, A..
Age and growth of <Pagellus bellottii> (Sparidae) of Mauritanian coasts : The red Pandora <Pagellus bellottii> is one of the most important demersal species in the fisheries of Mauritanian coasts. Several gears and fleet traditionally exploit it. The studies concerning this fish and particularly those of its age and growth are rare and haven’t used the adequate method, which founded on hard pieces like scale and vertebra. The objective of the present work is to contribute to the knowledge of the growth parameters of the red Pandora using the scales method not yet used in the studied area. To determine the age and to study the growth of <Pagellus bellottii> in Mauritanian coasts, we have used the scales of 544 individuals. We have token, 8...

Kraiem, M.M.; Chammam-Abdelkader, B.; El Abed, A..
The survey of age and growth of two Dentex species <Dentex dentex> and <Dentex maroccanus> from the Tunisian coasts shows a difference of the growth rate between the two species with a faster growth for <Dentex dentex>. Any difference of growth has been noticed within the same species. However females present superior maximal sizes comparing to the males for the two species. Concerning the weight growth, the males of <Dentex dentex> seemed heavier than the females, whereas for <Dentex maroccanus> the females show a weight growth superior to that of the males.
