| Phytoplankton primary production, bacterioplankton abundance, chemosynthesis rate and the total bacterioplankton production were measured in the Black Sea during the cold season from early February to April 1991. Primary production was found at its seasonal maximum, which corresponded to the winter – early spring diatom bloom. Photosynthesis rate at the surface varied between 20 and 120 mg C m-3 d-1, with the maxima in the central cyclonic eddies. Integrated primary production in the water column ranged between 0.4 and 1.2. g C m-2 d-1 in the central eddies and between 0.2 g and 0.4 g C m-2 d-1 at their margins.
