“Maejo 2” is a new variety of glutinous rice with desirable aroma, lacking photoperiod sensitivity and exhibiting a semi-dwarf stature. Glutinous rice Maejo 2 was improved from the recurrent non-glutinous rice parent, Pathum Thani 1 (WxWx), which has desirable aroma, lacks photoperiod sensitivity and has a semi-dwarf stature. Pathum Thani 1 was crossed with a glutinous rice (wxwx) donor parent, RD6 to initiate a backcross breeding program. Molecular markers for the wx (glutinous, recessive) or Wx (normal, dominant) alleles were used to identify progeny that inherited the desired wx allele in heterozygous individuals that don’t express the glutinous phenotype. Thus, each BCnF1 generation, F1 progeny with the of backcrossing in this way, the BC4F1 plants... |
