The mysid-feeding guild of demersal fishes in the brackish zone of the Westerschelde estuary OMA
Hostens, K.; Mees, J..
The demersal fish fauna of the mesohaline zone of the Westerschelde estuary (south-west Netherlands) was sampled intensively in the period 1990-1992. Almost 500 beam trawl samples were taken in both subtidal (330 samples) and intertidal (144 samples) habitats. These yielded 44 fish species, mostly as juveniles. The area functioned as a nursery for several demersal fish species, and harboured large populations of hyperbenthic mysids. Three gobies, three flatfish, one clupeoid and one gadoid dominated the fish fauna, while three mysid species were important components of the holohyperbenthos. From c. 1500 stomach contents of 25 fish species, 44 prey species were identified, the most abundant of which were also common in the hyperbenthal. The demersal fish...

The identification of Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas) and Pomatoschistus lozanoi (de Buen) (Pisces, Gobiidae) OMA
Hamerlynck, O..
Sand gobies are extremely abundant in coastal waters and estuaries. Pomatoschistus lozanoi tends to be overlooked due to identification problems. This paper summarizes the characteristics to distinguish P. lozanoi from P. minutus and presents a new distinctive feature that allows identification of juveniles from 15-20 mm standard length onward. The known geographic distribution of P. lozanoi is extended northward to 53°30'N and southward to 40°N on the coast of Europe. In northern Europe P. lozanoi seems better adapted to the estuarine habitat than previously thought.

Life history, food consumption and resource partitioning in two sympatric gobies Pomatoschistus minutus and P. lozanoi in the Belgian coastal waters OMA
Hamerlynck, O.; Heip, C.H.R.; Redant, F..
Gobies were obtained monthly from the bycatch of a commercial shrimp trawler operating in the shallow waters (less than 20m depth) of the Westdiep area, Southern Bight of the North Sea, from May through December 1984. Pomatoschistus lozanoi juveniles appear later than P. minutus juveniles, indicating a temporal segregation of reproduction. Yearly average density of P. minutus is about twice that of P. lozanoi. Food consumption by the two species amounts to 1-2 g AFDW/m2/year. Stomach analysis of several hundred gobies shows that P. minutus is a food generalist that obtains most of its food from the benthos and epibenthos. P....
