Anatomy of the male reproductive system of Phrynops geoffroanus (Testudines: Chelidae) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i4.8091 3
Cabral, Silvia Rosana Pagliarini; UNESP - IBILCE; Santos, Lia Raquel de Souza; UNESP - IBILCE; Franco-Belussi, Lilian; UNESP - IBILCE; Zieri, Rodrigo; UNESP - IBILCE; Zago, Carlos Eduardo Saranz; UNESP - IBILCE; Oliveira, Classius de; UNESP - IBILCE.
The reproductive system of male Phrynops geoffroanus adults is macroscopically described and the variation in testicular biometry is evaluated. A pair of oval testes is connected by the efferent ductules to the epididymis, which continue as deferent ducts, which emerge in the penis. The volume of the gonads showed the highest averages during spring and summer months. GSI varied significantly throughout the year, with the highest averages observed in the months that correspond to the end of spring and the beginning of summer, when the reproduction of the species takes place, and the lowest averages were seen in winter, suggesting a cyclical testicular activity.

Temporal variation of soil entomofauna from an urban forest fragment in southern Brazil 3
Lopes, Marta Custodio; Silva, Geuza Cantanhede da; Antunes, Nicanor Tiago Bueno.
Insects are important environmental bioindicators, due to the species diversity and wide range of habitats occupied. The present study evaluated the temporal variation in composition and abundance of soil insects in an urban forest fragment in the municipality of Toledo, in the state of Paraná, by analyzing their abundance and seasonality. Monthly samplings were conducted between August 2011 and July 2012 at four sampling sites within the fragment. At each site, three pitfall traps remained exposed for 48 hours. Captured insects were fixed in alcohol, sorted and identified. Throughout the study period, we captured 11,568 insects from 11 orders and 35 families. Coleoptera was the richest order (12 families), followed by Diptera and Hemiptera (5),...

Bat assemblage of Guaribas Biological Reserve, an Atlantic forest conservation unit in North-eastern Brazil: Results of a two-stage long-term survey 3
Zeppelini, Caio Graco; Jerônimo, Isabela; Rego, Karlla Morganna da Costa; Fracasso, Maria Paula de Aguiar; Lopez, Luiz Carlos Serramo.
Inventories are the basis of every work with biodiversity, with increased importance due to the current environmental crisis. Bats are one of the most diverse groups of mammals, with high ecologic versatility and are good bioindicators to monitor environmental impacts. We performed a two-stage survey at an Atlantic Forest reserve in the State of Paraíba, the first stage registering 187 individuals of 24 species and the second stage, 1073 individuals of 11 species; the second stage’s richness being a subset of the first as pointed by the Mann-Whitney test. The second stage was more efficient in accumulating individuals, while the first accumulated species more efficiently. The diversity estimation (Chao 1) pointed that the survey was efficient in...

Medium-sized mammals in peri-urban environments in southern Brazil 3
Tedesco, Carla Denise; Silva, Douglas Machado da; Zanella, Noeli.
Anthropic effects on natural environments caused by urban expansion or agriculture have been identified as one of the causes for the decline in species richness. In southern Brazil, the urbanization process affects the local fauna and reduces the diversity of mammalian species. This study was conducted from 2012 to 2015 with the objective of gathering information on mammalian species in a peri-urban area. Data was collected four consecutive days each month for 42 months using sand plots and visual searches. Occasional encounters and camera traps complemented were used to complement the data. We recorded 15 mammal species belonging to 10 families. The species with the highest abundance, taking into account all the applied methods, were Didelphis...
