Stéréovision Locale et Reconstruction 3D/4D ArchiMer
Brandou, Vincent.
The aim of this study is to propose a complete 3-dimension reconstruction method of natural submarine objects improved by a new acquisition method for quantitative measures, which can be used in operational conditions. First, it was necessary to take into account the various problems connected with the deep sea environment; the main constraint is that the system used to collect images must be manipulated at very important depths, up to 6000 meters by an underwater vehicle positioned on the sea floor. Thus, a method allowing the automatic acquisition of images was developed, adapted to any type of small-scale submarine object (approximately 1m3). The image acquisition is performed with a stereovision system operated by a manipulator arm. The method that we...

3D Reconstruction of Natural Underwater Scenes Using the Stereovision System IRIS ArchiMer
Brandou, Vincent; Allais, Anne-gaelle; Perrier, Michel; Malis, E.; Rives, P.; Sarrazin, Jozee; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
The aim of this study is to propose a 3-dimension reconstruction method of small-scale scenes improved by a new image acquisition method for quantitative measurements. A stereovision system is used to acquire images in order to obtain several shots of an object, at regular intervals according to a predefined trajectory. A complete methodology of 3D reconstruction is exposed to perform a dense 3D model with texture mapping. A first result on natural images collected with the stereovision system during sea trials has been obtained.

Shape, Septa and Scalloping of the Maxillary Sinus International Journal of Morphology
Rennie,C; Haffajee,M.R; Satyapal,K. S.
The maxillary sinus varies according to age, however there are limited studies that have illustrated its 3D form over time. This study aimed to classify the maxillary sinus by the shape, number of septa and scallops in a 1 to 25 year age group, utilising computerized tomography (CT) scans and 3D reconstruction. CT scans (n=480) were reviewed from the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) of the state and private hospitals in Pietermaritzburg and Durban KwaZulu- Natal (KZN), South Africa. The sample consisted of 276 males and 204 females, 1-25 years and of two population groups, black African and white. SLICER 3D (www.slicer.org) was utilised in order to reconstruct a 3D model of the sinus. Morphological traits such as the presence of the sinus,...

Software for interpolation of vegetative growth of yerba mate plants in 3D PAB
Silva,Murilo Hilário Mazza da; Rakocevic,Miroslava.
The objective of this work was to build mock-ups of complete yerba mate plants in several stages of development, using the InterpolMate software, and to compute photosynthesis on the interpolated structure. The mock-ups of yerba-mate were first built in the VPlants software for three growth stages. Male and female plants grown in two contrasting environments (monoculture and forest understory) were considered. To model the dynamic 3D architecture of yerba-mate plants during the biennial growth interval between two subsequent prunings, data sets of branch development collected in 38 dates were used. The estimated values obtained from the mock-ups, including leaf photosynthesis and sexual dimorphism, are very close to those observed in the field. However,...

First data on dinosaur eggs and clutches from Pinyes locality (Upper Cretaceous, Southern Pyrenees) Ameghiniana
Vila,Bernat; Jackson,Frankie; Galobart,Àngel.
We describe a new megaloolithid locality discovered near Coll de Nargó (Catalonia, northeastern Iberian Peninsula). Eggs at the Pinyes site occur within extensively developed, vertically-stacked paleosols of an alluvial system. Eight clutches were excavated and mapped and biological and taphonomic aspects recorded. Three-dimensional maps were constructed using a Trimble total station, supplementing traditional planview mapping to allow more accurate interpretation of egg and clutch distribution. The Megaloolithus siruguei eggs are compressed, presenting an ellipsoidal shape. The three-dimensional geometry of two large clutches suggests that the eggs were laid in shallow, bowl-shaped depressions. Tangential thin sections of eggshells also reveal abundant...

Quantitative analysis of nucleolar chromatin distribution in the complex convoluted nucleoli of Didinium nasutum (Ciliophora) Biol. Res.
Leonova,Olga G; Karajan,Bella P; Ivlev,Yuri F; Ivanova,Julia L; Skarlato,Sergei O; Popenko,Vladimir I.
We have earlier shown that the typical Didinium nasutum nucleolus is a complex convoluted branched domain, comprising a dense fibrillar component located at the periphery of the nucleolus and a granular component located in the central part. Here our main interest was to study quantitatively the spatial distribution of nucleolar chromatin structures in these convoluted nucleoli. There are no "classical" fibrillar centers in D.nasutum nucleoli. The spatial distribution of nucleolar chromatin bodies, which play the role of nucleolar organizers in the macronucleus of D.nasutum, was studied using 3D reconstructions based on serial ultrathin sections. The relative number of nucleolar chromatin bodies was determined in macronuclei of recently fed, starved...

Application of endoscopy to treat mandibular keratocystic odontogenic tumors BJMBR
Gao,Z.; Ni,Q.W.; Gao,W.; Liu,Y.P.; Zhang,Q..
The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of endoscopy to remove keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs) with virtual 3D mandibular images. Fifteen patients (mean age, 40.27±14.58 years) who underwent endoscopic mandibular KCOT enucleation between May 2009 and October 2009 were included. Virtual 3D mandibular reconstructions derived from computed tomography (CT) imaging were generated for all patients. Recurrence and pathological fracture were evaluated as the primary outcome variables at 1 and 12 months after operation. Secondary infection and inferior alveolar nerve injury were evaluated as the secondary outcome variables at 1 and 6 months after operation. None of the 15 patients exhibited signs of recurrence or pathological fracture after...
